I'm posting there right now.
But, yes, I agree -- dead moderated groups should be either
removed or given a new moderator.
What was alt.gourmand originally about?

Gourmet recipies, as I recall. No "can of mushroom soup &
tater tots" recipies; stuff you really make from scratch.
It was moderated to keep out recipies from Philistines who
would used powdered garlic instead of fresh.

It used to have some really good recipies in it. If there
could be found a new moderator... Well, I'm still subscribed,
after all these years.

(Don't look at me; if nominated I will run for the border,
if elected I will fight extradition.)

I don't know about that last part -- I remember it just being an
extension of Brian Reid's "Usenet Cookbook" newsgroup from back in the
days before the Great Renaming. Not many of us around from those
days. I don't remember what the mod.* newsgroup was that it was a
descendant of.

Its been dead for at least six years, maybe more -- I don't remember
it being used terribly much after its inception.

Ok, here's the real scoop:

Brian Reid was the moderator of mod.recipes. During the Great Renaming, it
was proposed that the name change to rec.food.cooking.recipies or something
like that. I walked into Brian's office one day and he was rather morose
as he felt that Usenet wasn't any fun any more and that it was becoming
ruled by a bunch of control freaks. So I suggested that he start up a new
Usenet hierarchy that was outside of the rules of the rest of Usenet...
an alternate network that used the same mechanism as Usenet, but that was
uncontrolled. He thought it was a great idea, and alt was born. I
sometimes wonder what the net would be like today if I hadn't made that
suggestion to him...

Maybe I'm recalling another group. There was a FAQ from the moderator
explaining the rules. Among them was something like "No substituting
powdered garlic for the real thing, unless you convince me that your
recipe calls for powdered garlic's different flavor. Some of Paul
Prudhomme's recipes use both powdered garlic and fresh."
