Originally I was going to get a PS3, but thought better of it since it's
not like I have the time to even play my XBox 360 that I bought-off of
my room mate. So now I'm considering what to use my merit points and
the cash from my recent check.
Only change to the home machine's hardware since I bought it in 2004 has
been a bigger hard drive (1 TB.) I've looked at the machine's manual
and know I can have up to 4 GB of RAM instead of the current 2 sticks of
512 MB each. Maybe I will switch to a LCD monitor instead of the CRT
I'm staring at, but then I have to deal with recycling the CRT and don't
feel like taking the effort to go to the part-of-town to ditch it at
when I don't drive.
I know I want an external hard drive to back-up the home machine,
Icarus (the HP mini 1035nr), Daedalus (not bought yet), and my personal
hard drive in my class machine. Also, I'd like to get an external case
for the personal hard drive in my class machine since I don't have
anything to store it in when I take it back.
Daedalus I want to be another netbook, but a model with a riduculously
long battery-life of 12 hours or whatever they're up to by the time I
buy him.
Before I go buy an MP3 player, I probably should pare my collection down
to tracks I'll actually bother listening to for a second time or so.
Using the camera feature on my Nintendo DSi has me wishing for a real
digital camera, but I'm not sure how much I'll use it.
As pretty as another student's camera with a phone (not a phone with a
camera) is, I probably should not get that or a similiar model to avoid
having a cell phone beyond my pre-paid Tracfone. My mind melted enough
as it is when I was comparing Tracfone with AT&T GoPhone and the thought
of getting an actual plan scares me.
So anyone have any comments, suggestions, additional products to
consider, etc.?

I can tell you where you can get the cheapest prices. www.dhgate.com.
It comes from China. It's going to be a knockoff or some misspelling,
Like Somy instead of Sony. But it's absolutely the lowest price. And
let's face it, computers are all made in China these days, even the
name brands.

Couldn't you advertise the CRT either in a real paper on on-line,
that you're offing a free monitor collection only.
There's usually someone out there looking for free stuff as long as it's
working.

Some of this Chinese stuff is really bad and not what it says on the tin.
Someone here brought some iPods for the kids order as 4GB but were actually
1GB
they'd hack the firmware to report higher capacities.
dhgate might be OK. The iPods were brought on eBay via china.
Another friend brought some LED strips claimed life 50,000 ours
about 20% failed din the fist couple of weeks, and then the power supply
melted.
Things made in china are OK if brought from reputable suppliers, but there's
lots
of crap made in china. One of the problems I had with my iMac was apparently
a dud
lot of capacitors that the Apple manufactures brought from china but were
out of tolerance.
Here, that's not generally worth the trouble. The people looking for
free things are usually so much trouble to deal with that GIVING AWAY
stuff becomes an excercise in aggravation. I've had people ask for money
to take away stuff that I've given them, others have asked to return
things that failed shortly after they took them away.

I know what you mean we have a thing called freecycle and people aren't
really interested
in anything old they expect the latest kit for nothing. I have a 24" CRT
brought in 1987.
If I put it out it'll get smashed, or end up somewhere else in a river or
something.
I'll ask the council oneday but they can take up to 7 days to collect it.

Probably a good idea.
> Maybe I will switch to a LCD monitor instead of the CRT I'm staring at,
I'd say, only if you need the space on your desk, feel like you're going
to need to move a lot, etc. (Or possibly, if your CRT is a bit small,
you might like a larger display... unlike television screens, a bigger
computer screen can actually display more bits.)

You too, eh? I don't like doing that kind of stuff even though I
can drive it, if I like.

Not a bad idea, but then you'll have your back-ups all in one place,
and won't be able to copy the back-ups. Burning DVDs of important data
is a little safer, particularly if you can think of a place to stash
them off-site (Maybe we all need to develop a custom of being
data-buddies-- I'll keep your data disks, if you keep mine. Oh by the
way, they're encrypted.)
There's something to be said for stashing data on-line somewhere, though
I have to confess I don't like the idea much... Trusting The Man is a
little dicey, even if The Man is Google.

I've come around to the idea of ultra-cheap quasi-disposable laptops...
my last laptop, I maxed out on the internal hardware, and now, of course
all the stupid plastic widgets on it are starting to go. Eventually I'm
going to have to toss it in a corner and turn it into a webserver or some
such.
(I really should've known better: it's the component stereo issue all
over again... if you've got everything in one box, what do you do with it
when half, but only half of it's functions are dead?)
> Before I go buy an MP3 player, I probably should pare my collection down

Why should you be any different from anyone else? You're supposed to buy
a 100 smegabyte sighPod, so you can brag about how you've got 10,000
tracks on it.
(Myself, I suspect I should get an el cheapo audio player, to make it
easier to listen to various sound files of radio shows. I've been using
my laptop as an audio player, and it's too awkward even for me to put up
with.)
> Using the camera feature on my Nintendo DSi has me wishing for a real

The Cannon PowerShot line is consistently impressive. Easy enough to use
in idiot mode, but a fair amount of depth in it's features if you feel
like hassling with it.

Better you than me.
Remember "the component stereo problem". If the camera in your phone (or
vice versa) gets screwed-up, then you've got an another awkward disposal
problem to wrestle with.

I'm not the greatest person to ask, really. The advertising inserts in
the Sunday paper always makes me shake my head in awe and wonder.
Freecycle seems to vary from city to city. It does very well here.
Anything I put on it is usually claimed in a few minutes.
The people can be a pain, sometimes. They don't seem to understand it
when I tell them my address and tell them to come and git it. They
want to talk on the phone. They want you to tell them directions like
"Now turn by the furniture store, go about a mile, then turn by the
oak tree." They have my address, they have google maps, figure it out.
But most of them seem to be stuck in the phone era.

Yup, here in the UK, it varies even more.
In Warrington/Stockport/Manchester lists we get "damaged but useable
sofas", and baby clothes and Non working kitchen equipment for
scrap/spare parts, but people I know who are on the Nottingham list have
had cars that have been perfect runners and road legal, brand new power
tools, leather furniture.
Sadly I'm in the area that wants Mac Book Pros and offers scrap washing
machines.

Bah. You can can get 10,000 songs in only 60GB. Topend chiPod oughta be
good for 30,000 tracks.

1 GB ones come free with a tank of gas these days, it seems. Of course,
they're crap, but they're cheap and and non-tragic to lose. My
headphones cost more than the refurbish SanDisk one that rides around in
my pocket. I hate it, but it's there. ChiPod one of these days.

I've been recommending Panasonic Lumix lately, for the decent Lecia
glass in them. They're affordable, and they generally take pictures
about as good as the DSLRs from three years ago do,

Let's see, I've gotten a perfectly good Norelco electric shaver from
Freecycle. I had to drive 20 miles for it, but it was free and it
looked new.
I also got a refrigerator. Had to drive 60 miles for that one, but it
works very well. Today someone offered a Samsung Maxima zoom 80 Ti
camera. And a few weeks ago someone gave away a dirt devil easy
steamer. (A type of vacuum/ carpet cleaner combo)
I've given away a non-working car. Some office chairs. And some other
things.
So it works pretty good here.

We do occasionally get the good stuff offered, but usually I'm not in
the position to "Collect today or it goes to the dump, You will need to
use a truck".
Our one is now called freegle, something change so we had to change.
>It does very well here.

}The people can be a pain, sometimes.
In my area the problem seems to be the turnover in people moving in and out
of rented
accommodation regally, they want new stuff, and not the stuff that was
there, then there's
the local trader taking anything and then dumping what they don't want.
A problem at the moment (from an email from freegle) is that people are
turning up to collect
things that have already been taken by someone else.
}They don't seem to understand it
}when I tell them my address and tell them to come and git it. They

Some get pissed off that you can't delivery it to them, while others claim
to be charities and a 'truck' turns that looks like it's of to a scrap metal
dealer.
It's a pity really as the basic idea is really good, it just that it tends
to get taken over
by those wanting to profit from it and others dumping what they don;t want.

See if there is a RealCycle group near you too.
Ours is pretty good in general although we do get a fair percentage of
no-shows. I started keeping a list of repeat offenders.

Freecycle in Toronto has split into Freecycle and a Freereuse group
because the former bans pets and anything they deem "political".
Apparently the split was triggered by Freecyle refusing to allow a
post offering rainbow stickers.

I once bought a Sansa, but it stopped working too quickly. Quickly
enough that I suspect a short-time savings of buying cheap MP3 players
would become more expensive than getting a better quality player in the
first place.
-TenshiKurai9
I've only driven twice since getting my license and I took-out a left,
rear tail light and left a black streak on the side of a parked car.
Not sure how well I can drive now.
Need to improve my skills too. I've at least figured-out how I could
theoretically do an overnight trip to Portland, ME from Boston without a
car, but not other areas.

Right now I have to figure-out why my DVD and CD burners are refusing to
read any disks at all before I can procure a back-up. Also, right now
your DVDs will be at risk of being lost if they go into my room.

NO!
Besides, if I was like that, I probably wouldn't be the kind of person
to be playing YouTube videos on freeganism as my background noise right
now.

Too awkward for me, but I see Job Corps students who'll take their
netbook and blast it loud while carrying it around.
Rambling based on the mention of freeganism in my post:
I still haven't been to a Food, Not Bombs gathering.
Since the A+ class had a hard enough time comprehending what a traveler
kid is, I dread how'd they react to the concept of dumpster diving.
Or their reactions to the thought that I've done it a few times with
other people.
But maybe I should bring-up the term freegan since I kinda do want to
see their minds melt.
Anyone else have ideas of concepts that I could bring-up just to watch
their minds shut-down from being unable to process?

thousand song playlists ready to plug in whenever I want.
