Just saw The Crow last night. In short, a pretty fine flick. If style
over substance doesn't bother you, then run, don't walk, to go check
this movie out.
It's yer basic lone crusader/revenge plot, complete with requisite
"poetic justice" killings and shoot-em-ups galore. *But* this standard
plot has been exquisitely wrapped in a highly stylized rock-and-roll
fable package that often leaves one agape at how *pretty* it all is.
The photography is superb, the editing mindwarpingly precise, and the
effects are professionally executed yet tastefully low-key. This is
very much a rock video run amok, or as my SO put it, Edward Scissorhands
meets Steven Seagal meets Trent Reznor.
Style is everything in this flick, from the wonderful clothing to the
dripping streets to the shadowy lighting to the wonderfully decorated
apartments the principals occupy. And the violence is nothing but a
ballet of kicks, punches, spinning knives and flying bullets. Lots of
people die, of course, but we are thankfully not treated to graphic
depictions - no spurting blood packs, no breaking limbs, etc. Once
again, tasteful and low-key.
Brandon Lee does a very credible job, his character treating his
beyond-the-grave invincibility with the sort of black humour one would
expect from a laid-back guitarist. There are a few angst filled scenes,
but on the whole, Lee's Eric is the kind of guy I'd want to hang out
with, dead or alive, if only to catch some great jokes. Example:
Cop: Move and you're dead.
Eric: I'm dead, and I move.
And yes, electrical tape does indeed make a good fashion accessory,
although removing it must hurt.

Pat Eves
