Scene? We have a "scene" here? You mean besides the yuppie pop-rock
scene?
Best place for gothy-type people in Indy, IMHO, is the Melody Inn at
38th and Illinois. They play gothic/industrial/punk/whatever else they feel
like on Saturday nights and gothic/industrial on Sunday nights. The people
that put it on have a Web site at www.alyda.com/bog.html Check it out if you
get a chance. Later,

Science Lesson for the Day:
Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright
until you hear them speak.
NB: almost all midwest.goths do this as they hit their 20s and realize
that mostly what surrounds them is a fashion show rather than solid
thought - "I'm a non-conformist, just like all of my friends!" Death to
AGF! Long live the New Flesh!
> i have lost all of my friends and acquaintances in the city...
Indy is the center of the Hazy Hoosier Hellhole. It's like "Hotel
California" - you can check out any time you like, but you can never
leave. Slowly but surely, your soul gets pulled back into the vortex
which swirls out of UniGov and into the apathetic maw of the
metropolitan burb.clave.
Surviving as a goth here means taking lots of being ignored. Go back to
bed - and try to get a few prostitutes in there with you (Herron flavor,
not E. Washington mind you): it just feels better.
If you feel you *must* go out: hit www.alyda.com. Alyda may be a legend
in her own mind, but she's pretty hup once you get beer in her hand
instead of jack+coke. The BOGglings are pretty cool, too. The party info
line is (317) 335-4717.
If alcohol isn't your thing or you're underage: Lockerbie Coffeehouse.
Young goths hang out and drink far too many "jeremy/keith strength" cafe
mochas while listening to P.Murphy, Cure, Joy Div., Swans, etc. Every
other frday the BOGglings put on Bedlam (all ages goth night) there in
the smoking lounge (cloves welcomed with wide open arms!). Purple
Underground occasionally puts on goth flavored shows, such as the one
coming up on the 11th with Saraswati (math-rock, but still pretty cool
to we rivetheadz), Dragon Tears Descending[sp?], and erotic performance
art by Crimson Mane.
Unfortunately, the scene here tends to be rather small and close-knit.
But come up to just about anyone at a show who looks to be of legal age
and you'll find cool folks. That's why I stay here...

i wouldn't mind going back to bed with a nice woman (any takers???
didn't think so)... which brings us to my little "problem"... i do not
have the money for prostitutes and i have just been released from a 4
year long relationship... indy has made me enjoy being "tied down"

i am an "elder-goth" at 29... and was use a heavy drinker... regardless,
i do not mind having a nice drink from time to time... certainly, if i

what, would you say, is THE (so to speak) night to be out (saturday or

The Sunday night event has been going on for just over a year. The music
is always great. Sometimes the place is packed; sometimes it's dead. (Note
that the Melody Inn is a pretty tiny place, so "packed" is a relative term).
The DJs play a lot of industrial, some goth, and a little techno every now
and then. The people are always fun and tend to be a close-knit bunch.
The Saturday night dance thing starts tomorrow night, so no one really
knows how good it will be. The people who put it on are comparing it to the
"Resurrection" night at the Patio in Broad Ripple from a few years back
(same DJ). The music should be a little more varied than the Sunday night
gig. Drop in and see what it's like.

I"m from Indianapolis. The Goth scene here is horrible, IMHO. Just like
many cities, it features a lot of snobby gamers (and sure, I've done my fair
share..) and art kids who just jump around with make up on and have a boring
time.
Then again, I avoid the "clubs," here. I'm under 21, I've dabbled in it
before, and I don't know anyone who's involved in it.
And the fact that I don't wear all black, makes me uncool, it seems.
*smirk, chuckle*

Totally true. Everyone I know who has left, comes back. I used to work
at Borders on the north side (the one next to the Fashion Mall) in music, and
Marlene something..I forgot her last name, a psychic, lectured there. And she
said (it made me chuckle) that there is a force that draws people back to
Indiana, because we are the heartland, and when Mother Nature is out causing
floods, tornados, hurricanes, snow storms, earthquakes, they won't be hitting
Indiana - so we are a "safe hold."
Go figure. I just want to get the hell out of here, and die somewhere
other then the Hoosier State.

Haha. Herron Art girls! Kick ass! That was funny..my sister went to
Herron, majored in Photography, and luckily, she was *not* one of those
girls..I don't think.
I was going to go to Herron, but I"m changing my mind, cause half the
people who go there make me sick.

Well, sometimes there are good girls that show up (like me). Of course,
I'm a virgin, and not into the whole "sleeping around," scene, though I have
had my fair share of boyfriends (and whatever else). (I know..I share too
much information, but who cares).
We exist, it just takes some looking. Look for us in bookstores and music
stores, antique malls, Italian and Japanese resturants, and Future Shock
buying the affordable sale shoes (that's all that I can afford) that are
platforms.
We exist. Well, I do. Hehe..

Geeze, lucky you. THe last thing, "goth" I went too, was some miserable
night at the Razor, and I had a sip of a milkshake a girl friend of mine had,
and i almost passed out on the "dnace floor" after hearing the Crow soundtrack
one more time....

Do these thing feel uncomfortable? I mean, if I was to go, and having
never met most of those people, not wear all black, and be all spooky. (I
mean I have dark brown rod stewart rock star hair and I wear cowboy boots and
blue jeans)
I'm one who usually doesn't give a fuck. I"ll get loud nad obnoxious,
but, Id on't have many friends who would go with me, and when I'm alone, I get
sort of timid and shy, and bored.
What are your thoughts and feeligns on these things (I'm underage, perfer
liqour, and I"ve gotten into the Melody before, but I'm too paranoid for
bars..)?

Saraswati is great, (I'm a slight rivetcowgirl myself). Not that I'm just
friends with the guys in the band, but, they are awesome. Emotional powerful
rockn'roll. They have webpage....damnit, I forgot it.
http://www.bewley.net/~chandler and you should find a link to it on Matt's

They kick arse. IMHO (And I like Shellac, Big Black, mathy shit..)

It's a coffeehouse, m'dear. The Dame showed up at the last Bedlam wearing
blue jeans and a blue argyle sweater and she out goth'd half the place
(Ismene being the exception that proves the rule). I wore a pair of black
BDUs, GI boots & a black t-shirt - much more rivethead than goth but...
Vanilla/Mundane folk come in and out getting latte's and coffee
constantly. The bar across the street doesn't serve any non-alcoholic
coffee drinks anymore, so we get some of them coming over.

Yeah, I know it's "yr mind that matters, not yr closet," but last time I
got "involved" in any goth stuff in Indianapolis, I felt very uncomfortable,

It was very annoying. Of course, I was much more self concioncess etc,
back then.

Oh yeah, she's super nice. She's good friends, with my friend ALex's

Missed you at the B-day party (what's this about me not getting out?)
- much fun was had with pizza, The 13th Warrior and... other things. I
had to leave early tho. Such is the lot of a corporate working stiff.

Vargr's place doesn't count as getting out - The Brotherhood were there,
ferpetessake. Criteria for getting out: beer not from your fridge, half-
naked members of the appropriate sex, repetitive noises of a rhythmic
nature...
On second thought, I guess it did count ;-).
BTW - the artist formerly known as The Dame and MySelf showed at 10:30
after another friend's b'day party over at the Hard Rock. You must've
pumpkin'd out *real* early, buddy boy...
Damn, I thought this was going to be about the new Gibson novel.

That's what I get for not being up on my Old Norse.
As far as Indianapolis goes,
What little goth life there is in that town that didn't die when the No
Bar went under in Muncie (any of you remember it?) seemed to center
around the Abbey and the Half Price Books, both in Castleton. In that
town, if you're goth, you are contractually obligated to work for a
bookstore. No ifs, ands or buts about it.

Sure sounds like it - I went home 'round ten. And I was *still* late
for work the next morning. Perhaps I shall see you at Lockerbie but
definitely at the ole PU.

Hmmm.. I don't think so. Apparently it's an old norse word meaning one
of several thigns; wolf, outlaw, etc.
But geeze - Traveler! There's a game I haven't thought about in 20
years or so...

I second mykal in saying "Jeez - Traveller..."

erotic performance art with a troupe called Crimson Mane. His website is

Caffeine is still one of the drugs of choice - but it's now moved
further south to Lockerbie (just down the street from Abbey Prime at
Mass Ave & College). And the bookstore requirement seems to have been
waived in favor of "professional student" and/or "code toad".
I fulfilled my requirements with Brady Games (a division of Macmillan
Digital Publishing). Mykal still works there, I believe. That's about
all I know about the local census of Book.Goths...

Shhhh! No one is suppsoed to know! Oh wait.. I've told everyone this
before... Well - I *did* work for a bookstore at the Anderson mall. If
you ever want to see the living dead in Indy - go there. I'm not talking
about the goth bookstore people, I'm talking about the *mall walkers*.
they flock there in droves.
DJ Specter did time at a bookstore in Castleton as well. But he was in
the CD section, so it was ok.

Hrm - perhaps I should have gone ot that instead of the hockey game. I'm
going to guess that there would have been more violence and body checking
going on.
For those of you not from the armpit of the midwest,
Anderson is a sucking hole in the eastern part of the state.
It was known in the early 80s as having the highest unemployment in the
country - at the time more than 25%.This is what you get when there are
three big employers in town, all auto plants, and two of them shut down.
Anderson is a cesspool. I grew up about half an hour away. Everyone with
an iq higher than room temperature leaves as soon as possible by any
means possible. It's so bad that it makes India-no-place look like a
haven of tolerance and culture.
Some things never change.

No body checking to speak of. Violence, yes, but only the really fun kind.
If only we would have had the video camera...

Heh:) It wasn't so bad- the scary thing was when they opened in the
morning. I would slip under the gate to count the register and get things
ready. The mall would already be filled with mall walkers - like some
sort of bizarre day room in an asylum - most would shuffle about, others
would actually walk. Some would talk to the air in front of them.
I worked there for two months until the manager decided that she couldn't
give me more than ten hours a week, but needed me to be available at all
times - hence no requested days off. Even with a months notice. So I
quit.

But they had A-1 Records and Music Today; both landmark establishments
for musicians and fans alike. Plus they had that old theater downtown.
But otherwise - a very good description. we drove through the butt end of
Andersonon our way to Fairmount. *Very* depressing.
I was in Munice for about two years. It's not much different, despite
Ball State being there - it's a town slowly waiting to die.

Really? A half hour away? Zowie... that sounds bad! I was in the sticks
as well. We at least had I-70 nice and close by, so we could amuse
ourselves by throwing thigns out onto it.
Just kidding.
But it *was* boring.

Eeek - I did it for about 6. Somewhere I felt that 'manager' was a good
title to have. I used to be a lot more agressive with my job. Retail
broke me of that! Luckily I escaped.

Oh yeah! They have Dominion now, which does its fair share. I had the
pleasure of working at One Music before the manager decided to become a
minister. I'm not joking! Here was this 28 year old hippie, running the
one of the cooler non-stoner record stores in Muncie, and he heard the
calling. It was one of the best low paying jobs I ever had.

Aye! Or Brown County. There were always plenty of creepy back country
dirt roads to scare ourselves on at night though (I'll dredge up one such
story if I can find it...). *That* was good fun. I'll revisit them
occasionally just to see if I can still feel that chill. But mostly it's
just backwater Indiana.

"If I can make it until 5 PM without killing anyone,
the day will be considered a success."
Two words: Camby, Indiana. It's where my family moved after we left
Montreal, PQ...
It was just a post office and a gas station and a liquor store until
about 5 years ago. Now there's a wee bit more to do nothing at clustered
around SR67 on the way down to Mooresville. If you're on 67 at just the
right place, you can see *exactly* where the glacial ice cap stopped
during the last ice age. Gravity Hill was about a 10 minute bicycle ride
from my parent's house. Friendswood Golf Course holds fond memories of
me running a quick 9 with friends while I was wearing a Bauhaus t-shirt,
paint covered BDUs and black jungle boots - that's back when I could do
9 holes in the mid 40s...
Lot's of old housing editions from the 60s and 70s surrounded by corn &
soybean fields. A few wineries have vines nearby, but those are either
private or selling to C.Thomas or Oliver (...ack...). Plenty of gnarled
old farmhouses in the middle of nowhere looking like good places to hide
the bodies down in the root cellar...
Too bad they don't make nostalgia like they used to...
