I got my lip pierced last saturday (bottom lip, bcr in the centre - looks
brutal).

now ive been told 2 things - some have told me to leave the ring as it is
-others have told me to make sure that i turn it around in the hole

which should I *really* do and what is the reason??????

It's not necessary to turn it. Especially don't turn it if the piercing and
your hands aren't both clean. And don't force it to move around. When it's
ready to move, it will move. Also, the appropriate newsgroup to ask this
question is rec.arts.bodyart. Good luck with your lip.

Do rotate it a couple imes a day to keep the crust yucky stuff off it and
clean it regularly. that is why you rotate it, but dont play with it
excessivly, or youll irritate it.

Go to www.bmezine.com and http://www.safepiercing.org/
and look at the aftercare instructions. Be sure your hands
are clean before you touch the piercing at all (one of the most common
mistakes). Turn the ring only if there isn;t a great deal of resistance -
otherwise you might rip out fragile healing tissue and/or push crusties
into the hole. Read all that you can and make up your mind from
there - YMMV, hence all of the dissenting opinions.

Noooo. Soak the crusties off. If you rotate the ring with the crusties
still on it, it'll drag the bastards through the piercing and that hurts
like the dickens. Not to mention, it drags bacteria through. What I
suggest is make a saltwater solution (you *should* use natural sea salt, but
i use table salt. but i know it isn't ideal, and i'm willing to deal with
the consequences if i fuck it up. some people aren't. make your choice.)
I believe the proper ratio is 1/4 teaspoon to 8 oz. of water. Then, dip a
cotton ball in the saltwater and hold it over your lip, so half is inside
and half is outside, over the piercing. I've used this aftercare for 2 of
my 5 non-ear piercings [1], and I've found it works fabulously better than
anything else. YMMV, of course. Definitely, though, check out RAB and
http://www.bme.freeq.com for more info.

[1] I'm not counting my ear piercings here cause they were all done when I
was stupid and got gunned piercings.

Yay for RAB lurkers! Although, I do actually post there maybe twice a week.
Lish made fun of me the other day. I felt proud of that, for some odd
reason.

Hm... I just re-read this, and to me it sounds kind of bitchy. Sorry if I
offended, I just tend to get worked up about piercing. Very worked up.
Very. I had to leave the room once to avoid twitching when I heard some guy
giving his "professional" advice to a girl, telling her to put Neosporin on
her navel piercing. Ugh.

What I don't understand is why your piercer didn't give you proper
aftercare instructions! Sheesh!

FWIW, Nikki's advice sounds ideal to me. That's what I did with my
nostril piercing, oh-so many years ago.

Another good point. People come on RAB all the time with, "ok like i got my
belly peirced yestrday witha gun and i dont no how to cleen it what should i
do email me plz thanx bye1". Of course, this isn't *quite* the same
situation, but still someone failing to get aftercare instructions from
their piercer, which just seems absolutely ridiculous to me. I gotta wonder
about people like that.

No offence taken, this is just what worked for me., i should have mentioned
that i cleaned it befor rotating it. I have quite a few piercings, so i am
just saying what worked for me.

I understand that. I just wanted to make it clear that a) It's not really
necessary to rotate, and b) Rotation before it's ready to move can tear
those thin layers of skin that are just starting to form and impair healing.
Although I do rotate my piercings once they've had a little chance to
recuperate though, just cause it feels neat. :)

This isn't the piercers fault, its mine. The place was very clean and
professional, and they gave me a full A4 sheet if how to look after it and
stuff. However, when I went into the little room to actually get pierced
she held the sheet for me. And I forgot about it until I got home.

I dont get to see her much so I cant get it back.

*tom hangs his head in shame*

id just like to say a big thank you to everyone who has responded to this
for all the help.

FWIW, my piercer recommended using Neosporin for no longer than 10
days to knock out any initial infection, but not interfere with the
piercing healing correctly. I think there's as many piercing
aftercare routines as there are piercers.

Gah. Don't even get me started on the use of antibacterial products on
non-infected piercings. Or the use of anti-bac products in general.

anyhow. anyone that's interested:
