My mum swears by the MAC brush cleaner for makeup brushes. It cleans,
disinfects and supposedly shortens drying time.
I haven't tried it. I just use a mild shampoo and warm water. Knowing
you I'm assuming you have good quality natural bristle brushes. Just
remember to respect how they're anchored. Don't scrub them clean - swipe
them through the cleaning agent and wiggle to work into brush base.
When they're clean, mold them back to the original shape and stand up (a
glass works well for this) to dry. Do not use a heat source! Leaving the
brushes on a heat register or using a hairdryer will do nasty things to
your brushes. The brushes don't take more than a day to dry.

the best way to clean makeup brushes (or paint brushes if that's more your
thing :) is to use a mild soap and some lukewarm water. it takes some
rubbing usually to get all the gunk out of a brush, but you want to be very
gentle with it at the same time. what i do is put a small amount of mild
soap in my palm. do this over the sink with the water running and add water
to the mix as needed. hold the brush sideways so that the bristles are flat
against your palm. gentle rub it in the soap, on all sides. (if it's a
flat brush, as many makeup brushes are, do one flat side and then flip it
over.) then, holding the just-soaped up bristles under the water, just
gently work the soap out.

as for drying: it's easiest to just let them dry with the bristles pointing
upwards, but that can wear away at adhesive that holds the thing together.
you may be ok doing that, but you may end up losing more bristles in the
long run. the best thing to do is the let it dry flat. if it won't be too
much in your way, just lay it so that the handle is on the vanity and the
bristles are over the sink. when the brushes are dry, you can store them as
you normally would.

as for hairbrushes... eh. i normally just rip whatever hair out of it that
i can and leave it at that. ;) ... but i'm sure someone else can do better
than that. :-P

If they are natural bristle, I find that using conditioner after washing
with shampoo, as you do on your own hair, is very good for keeping them in
like-new condition.

Everything I've read has said to use shampoo. Save any trial sizes you
get and this is a good way to use them up. Any plain ol' shampoo will
work.

Piggybacking...missed the original.
I'm just reading Bobbi Brown's makeup book - don't agree with a good bit of
it - but - for brush cleaning she suggests putting a little mild shampoo
(like baby shampoo) in the palm of your hand with some warm water, swirling
the brush around, rinse, squeeze out extra water, reshape brush, and lay it
on the edge of a counter to dry with the bristles in the air. Don't soak
(loosens bristles) and don't wrap in a towel to dry (bacteria).
