hair buns?

ok, i have fairly long hair. almost halfway to my waist or so, and
superthick.

i want to put it in two cute little buns.

and i have no earthly idea how to go about this.

does anyone have any idea how to explain this to me,cuz i'd really like
to try to do them

Okay, I've had to do this before when my hair was all one length because it
was too thick for the normal "bun-ing" process to work well. Part your hair
into two equal bits. Decide where you want the bun-y things. Take a third
or so of one section and put it in a rubber band where you want the bun.
Wrap the hair around the base of the rubber band, keeping it close to the
base instead of allowing it to pile up in a weird ball. Use lots of bobby
pins to anchor it. Take the next third or so of the section of hair and
wrap that around the existing bun-y thing. Make sure the sections are
blending well, otherwise it can look strange and chunky. Use lots of bobby
pins to anchor that section and make sure to keep it fairly close to the
base too. Treat the last section of hair in the same fashion, only you can
let it pile up a bit it you prefer the round and ball-ish bun-y look. Use
lots more bobby pins to make sure the whole thing is secure. Repeat the
process on the other side. It take a while, but it's secure and it keeps
the hair from forming enormous buns on the side of your head that look out
of proportion. Another option, if you hair is long enough, that looks cool
is to divide your hair into two sections, parted down the middle and then
divide those sections in half again. Use one half to tie a knot around the
other half. You have to pin it. Do the same on the other side. It's kind
of strange and interesting looking. You get these long tails coming out of
the knots. It looks kind of bondage-ish. I can't wait 'til my hair is long
enough to do that again.

I am in much agreement with bridget and kirby, but if you don't have a lot
of experience putting your hair up or if your hair is especially
slick-textured it might be a good idea to braid before you bun. Just divide
your hair and secure each half with an elastic where you want the bun to go.
Then braid it pretty tightly, securing each end with more elastics. Next,
wind your braids around the base, tucking the ends of the braids into the
first set of elastics to hide them. Alternatively, you can pull the loose
ends out through the bun as kirby suggests. (I sometimes spray these ends
into a stiff and spiky fan above and behind my buns.) Have fun!

well, if you've got thick hair it probably means bobby pins don't
work for you--me neither. They just slowly pop out of my head at random
times... i would try to find either those old plastic 'french twist pins'
that look like U's but with wavy legs. Put your hair in the bun shape (it
helps to stabilize if you put the hair in a ponytail where you want hte
braid centered) and put the french twist pins in as you would
chopsticks...that is point to the sky, flip em over so the point drags
across your scalp (just slightly, well, unless your'e into pain) and then
push through....It would take about three to four pins to hold a mini bun
(i do mine like little anime teddy bear ears) when i just do one big
honkin bun, i use chops....

Hey Andi,

I used to have the same problem with my hair. I'm a brunette and my hair is a little curly (i hate my friends with straight hair, so not fair!!) and it is so hard to get it to stay in a bun, it always looks messy like 15 minutes after I set it (which takes forever :(). I basically gave up on buns.

My mom bought me hot buns for Christmas... they are kinda cool. I just wish they matches my hair better I have to wrap my hair all the way around to make sure you don't see the buns at all... It's called hot buns: www.hotbunshair.com. Check it out, let me know if they work out for you.

First of all, thanks for the relevant post. Secondly, thanks to all the lurkers who contributed to the response effort.
Andi, if you have any further trouble, the easiest way I've found to create a very neat and tidy bun is with a sock. Find a pair of dress socks that match your hair color, look up YouTube videos on how to make a sock bun, and you should be set!
