Grace, when you say fake nails, do you mean drugstore stickon/glueon nails
or acrylic salon nails? Since you mention getting the wrong size, I suspect
you are talking about the drugstore ones which are pretty flimsy. My sweetie
wears them when he xdresses for a night but that's all they are good for. I
would recommend getting a set of salon done nails. Mine are 2" long; they
are very strong and I cook, sew, drive, take care of children and scratch
like a wildcat.

Not sure what to say about painting nails except keep practicing and be sure
to paint from the cuticle out to the fingertip.

False nails, of any kind, weaken natural nails. As time goes on the weakening
of the actual nail causes the false ones to fail. At that point, you are... how
do they say? Ahhh yes, screwed.
I reccomend starting by using a clear coat with hardener over your nails at
least twice a week. The presence of a protective coat does more than it's
built-in-hardeners.
Try not to make them really square or really pointed untill they've had a
chance to harden up.
Also, very sharp points of any kind (be it a squared tip or a talond-like one)
need to slowly be made.Get used to the length as well (if you're going for
length), expect breakage, expect rips, snaps... everything.
Oh, and if you get really sick, expect everything past the nail-bed to snap off
about two-to-four months down the road.
Currently the ghost of an old case of the flu has come back to haunt me.
If you have a tear or rip right against the nailbed, always trim the nail. This
reduces the chance of it ripping into the quick.
