I am in fashion hell.

Tim's niece is getting married in July. We are, of course, expected to
attend. Of course, it's in another city, so we'll be away for three days,
and it's a bad time for us to be away, but that's not the part I'm griping
about.

Amanda expects the men of the family to wear tuxedos. Bad enough. Much
griping all around, but they'll have to do it. I don't know where we'll get
the money for the rental of that. But worse- that means the women will have
to wear formal wear. Usually I'd be ecstatic about that, but....

Most of my fancy stuff is velvet. The wedding is outside, in a city and a
time when the temperatures *always* top 100F. Events start at 11 AM and go
on through the evening- outside. So the velvet is out.

She is not allowing any of the women to wear any black. Hello? Have you met
me? The one who *always* wears black?!?! So 90% of my stuff is out.

I've gained weight in the last few years, and I do not fit into most of my
fancy stuff anyway. There goes the rest of the wardrobe.

I'll have to find the time to make something suitable. At this time of year.

Oh, boy.

Maybe I'll get lucky and a meteor will hit me in the next couple of days. At
least I've got the ringbearer's pillow almost done so I can mail it off and
try to do something else in my evenings.

Just complaining here,

Oh, dear! I know what you are facing. I don't like it when
people make unreasonable requests about dress. Tuxs and formals in
100 plus temperatures is crazy. Most people reserve the usage of
tuxedos for evening wear. I usually opt for florals in that type of
situation - and a hat! You definately need to plan on wearing a hat
if you are going to be outside in the heat. Be sure that both you and
your SO have your health insurance cards in your pockets, you may need
them!
Can you borrow something from a friend? I hate spending money on
something I won't wear again. What size are you wearing now? I have
several semi-formal floral dresses that might work if you could get
away with a knee length dress. The ankle length formals I have are
black or too sexy for a wedding; one is all black knit tank dress, and
one is a blue and purple sorta leopard pattern...It looks much better
than it sounds. Could you get away with a long silk skirt and
blouse? Folkwear makes an Edwardian Bridal dress that you could make
up in grey (not Black) and that you might actually enjoy wearing.

can help you.

WHAT? Sounds like you've got a Bridezilla on your hands. Frankly, I'd tell
her to get stuffed, but I'm just a beyotch ;)

Laurie, I have some wedding-appropriate dresses I could lend if you
want to email offline & discuss sizes. I live in Florida, so most of
them won't kill you.
On the other hand, there IS a way out.... Check out Amanda's gift
list & buy something from it that's slightly extravagant. Make no
reservations & at the last moment, call & tell the family that someone
is ill or that the transmission fell out on the driveway or that one
of you fell & broke a tooth or elbow, etc. My spouse & I have actually
used this tactic successfully on a wedding of one of my cousins. We'd
have had to drive 18 hours & stay somewhere we didn't really want to
be & spend money we didn't really have to spare. We spent a little
more than we would have if we'd gone, sent it up North with a well-
thought out card & note with major apologies. We spent the whole
weekend guiltily chortling & not answering the phones. That was almost
2 years ago & we've gotten clean away with it!

That's rotten. At a formal event the bridal couple will be charged by
the plate for the number of guests anticipated.

Be a grownup. If you can't afford to go, or just plain don't want to,
just send your regrets immediately. You don't owe any information
beyond, "So sorry, we can't make it, but thanks for thinking of us and
congratulations".

Until now, that is.

Why didn't you just make an excuse when you got the invitation instead of
waiting until the your plates had been paid for? What you did was pretty
crappy IMHO.

Well, if I'm wrong, then I apologize. However, sounded to me like she had
RSVP'd and then made up some elaborate story at the last minute (as well as
took off for part of that weekend, wouldn't answer the phone, etc.). I know
I had two people not show up to my wedding and not give any explanation
why - I think I was more hurt than pissed, but still would have appreciated
hearing why they decided/couldn't come at the last minute. I certainly
wouldn't have minded saving the dough I spent on their dinners, favors, etc.

Sorry, yes, I deliberately did not RSVP for the reception so that we
would not be included or paid for. Y'all are certainly correct,
RSVPing & THEN not showing would have been downright rude as hell!

what Amanda expects & what Amanda gets can be two very
different things. is Amanda going to actually bar you from the
wedding based on your clothing choices?

it is *highly* unusual to demand formalwear for a morning
wedding, especially one held outdoors, and even more so
considering average temperatures of that nature. could you
possibly get her mother or another close relative to hit her
over the head with a clue by four? or ask her sweetly if she's
paying for the heat exhaustion bills for the guests...

> She is not allowing any of the women to wear any black.

we wore black to my SO's niece's wedding. i did consent to
trade out my black jeans for black velvet pants for the
ceremony, but wore jeans & a t-shirt to the reception. i hate
dressing up (& i was peeved that my kid was not invited to the
reception & his cousins were, so i wasn't in much mood to make
good impressions)

i love this pattern:

tab=list/sportswear_br_suits_coats_jackets&page=all

or: http://tinyurl.com/67half

if she doesn't want black, i'd go for grey & silver.
good luck!

I think I've got it sorted now. I've got a pattern for a long skirt & a
strappy top, and another pattern for a 'waterfall' thingie. A dear friend is
sending me some *almost* black purple taffeta which I'll use for the skirt.
I have some other taffeta- blue threads one way, red the other so it changes
shades of light/medium purple constantly- that I'll use for the top, and
hopefully have time to embellish that with some lace and beads. The
waterfall will also be the lighter color, if I can manage it. Then I'll have
three separate pieces that can be used with other pieces on other occasions.
And someone else is sending me a lightweight grey silk skirt that I may
switch to for the cruise so I'll be more comfortable- it'll go splendid with
the light purple, too.

That Edwardian dress is great, btw!

cutting costs, but this is ridiculous. I wonder if she's thought about the
fact that she, in her pure white dress, will have to use the park bathroom?
And park bathrooms are usually pretty damn dirty? And that random screaming

I can see the romantic appeal of an outdoor ceremony. The
flowers are beautiful and the photographs usually turn out better. I
had my wedding at the Botanical Gardens and it was lovely. The
wedding was in April, with forcast temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees,
not over 100 degrees! I was very aware that rain or excessive heat
could be a possible problem, so I had a contengency plan. Our
rehearsal dinner and reception were indoors at restaurants.
I am very surprised that any clergy person agreed to do the
wedding under the circumstances. And her fiancee, what was/ is he
thinking? I would have thought someone would have steped in and
stoped her. If everyone was invited to wear shorts and Hawaiian
shirts, the situation might have been tolerable. Tuxs and formals? I
don't think it will be successful. I hope that there is not a
terrible tragedy. It would be sad to have your wedding remembered as
the one where 14 people were sent to the ER and Aunt Hattie died.
Since you are planning on going to this fiasco, be as prepared as
possible. Have your insurance cards ready, seriously. Wear
sunscreen, and if possible, a hat. I would bring a bottle of water,
Gatoraid, or Propell in my bag with some glucose tablets (I have low
blood sugar.) Good luck.

Yeah, my daughter2 is planning a beach wedding for next May in North
Carolina. Point for her, she has been shooting down her intended's
suggestion of Myrtle Beach. On the other hand she is talking full
formal with everything outdoors. Though she is talking about renting
a couple of adjacent beach houses for it, so it is not as bad as a
public beach. But full formal on a beach? All my fine work dragging
on the ground? Outdoors next to an ocean with a redheaded pale
skinned maid of honor that burns going from her front door to her car?
Figuring to make her Father wear a tux? (he wore jeans and a T-shirt
to his own wedding!)

I still think she should hire a security company, or pro wrestling
referees and sell tickets, for the inevitable clash of the
grandparents.

I doubt if Olin has any power against the united might of his bride and her

Well, we don't have health insurance, so we're screwed there. I don't step
outside at all without sunscreen, and because I'm an insulin dependent
diabetic, I don't go *anywhere* without a fast sugar source. I usually carry
water or tea with me, but I'm trying to get away with carrying a small,
pretty purse instead of my usual Giant Bag o'Doom with glucose meter, sugar,
fluid, prescription meds, blah blah blah. And a book for when I get bored
with all these people who I have never met before. (I'm not good in social
situations at all and tend to wander off by myself after an hour or two) I
admit I've wondered if I have time to make a larger bag that would match my
outfit!

Thank you for the well wishes!

Doesn't sound very well thought out. I'm picturing a seaweed train on the
dress, with maybe some gull shit on the veil. Oh, well, at least that's
usually white! Renting at least one house is an *excellent* thought- a real
bathroom, an inside place to sit down. An inside place for the bride to get
ready! A place for the redhead to go when she turns into a lobster!

Now, see, this is just simply awful. It sounds like the bride is a spoiled
little beyotch who doesn't have a shred of consideration for anyone. Isn't
there any way you can opt out of this? Gracefully if at all possible?

Well, good luck, but I personally think the bride-to-be needs a good smack

Yep.

She has shown a bit of sense there too.
Her bridesmaids are all different shapes, all but the redhead are dark
haired. She is giving serious thought to how they can all look good.
No pink, orange or other colors that will make one or more of them
look just ill, no designs that will make the plump one look like a
tick on a carpet or the skinny one look like an ambulatory twig.
I am to meet them all (I gave birth to two of them so that will be
easy!) and design something that will look good on them individually,
The only absolutely mandatory common denominator will be a full skirt
and the color scheme. Since I have met all the girls I have already
had notions about what would look good on them.
She had planned to go with a deep forest green, but her intended feels
it would be too funereal. He suggested red, she told him to go grill
something and let her think. Now she is thinking lavender or lilac and
silver.
I think the green would be better.

Now *that* is the way to go with bridesmaid dresses. And I agree with the
deep forest green- in the pictures, the lilac or silver will blend into the
beach. I don't know if that is a consideration or not.

Indeed. But she is a very perky, yellow loving girl.

If I have time after getting the formal done, I'm making a long sleeveless
dress out of some cotton that is black with blue and purple skulls on it.
I'll wear that to the rehearsal dinner. Hey, she didn't say what we could or
couldn't wear to that!

Well, I think of hunter green as being more earthy and dramatic, rather than
"funeral", but that's just me.

It is soooo tempting! I've been telling hubby all along that we ought
to record the event with an eye to pay per view!

I said over in a.g some months ago, but do not recall if I mentioned
here, exactly what the cause for trepidation is. You see you have my
parents, old west hyperconservative, actually used to work in the
federal prison system, licensed and ordained evangelicals, and then
you have Donald's grandparents, Long Island ultraliberal, still
volunteer for the ACLU, devout catholics. Some of us believe that
just letting them get too physically near each other will cause a
socio-political Hiroshima effect that might turn a quiet beach in
North Carolina into a minature Washinton DC.

I think that Dear Daughter may not quite understand the volatility of
putting these old school probable antagonists in close quarters. She
told me that she is seriously considering asking my dad to perform the
marriage ceremony. Apparently she does not understand the ease of
offering a free party to a minor member of the judiciary. Surely
there must be a JP nearby who would be happy to score free food and a
day at the beach for his family!

One color that looks good on redheads as well as on brunettes, oddly
enough, is coral. Not too pinkish, not too orangey, but a really good
coral. Would look great on the beach as well. I know it sounds weird,
but check; they may be surprised.
I love the Edwardian pattern. I have enough white lace to do the
layering that would be proper for a daytime "tea dress", but am not
sure how to make it become "fabric". Maybe a super-sheer white
underfabric, then sew the lace directly onto that. Gonna be awfully
delicate, though. Don't know that I'm careful enough for that sort of
thing.

The coral sounds like a good colour choice. Watermellon and
periwinkle are other good choices, but I like coral better. You can
use Fusilage or Pellon, the iron on fabric stuff you use to make
applique to hold the lace to make the lace easier to sew.

Coral might be a bit iffy with one of the other girls, she is dark
haired and has that particular olive toned skin whereby you have to
have care with certain colors. That is why forest green instead of a
brighter green. The rest of the girls have cool toned skin, hers is
very warm.

If you want to use an iron on support for the lace I would suggest one
that is very lightweight. I prefer to bind the edge or sew on a
ribbon of fabric and use that for my sewing base, allowing most of the
fabric to be free flowing. With a typical edwardian design either
method would probably work well.

I've never had occasion to use the fusibles, yet; I'll do some
experimentation to get the feel of them....Thank you! Using the ribbon
idea would probably work really well for some of areas like the
sleeves & skirt. I've got a "sort of" dress that I like, all white &
flowy, but it's only knee length.
Have to wait till after Convergence; still working on black stuff
right now. The hardest thing is cutting apart 130yr old appliques &
trim; it's so irrevocable!

I've thought about that seriously, but I know that if I mention it to DH,
he'll just say "You have an umbrella". Bah. *Not the same* at all!

I do have a Chinese paper umbrella, but it's pretty big around and might put
someone's eye out.... I've also thought about taking my Victorian
grandmother's black lace fan, but with my luck some idiot (like, say, me)
would break it, so I just don't have the guts to try.

I *did* finally get the outfit cut out today! That was a royal pain, given
the small table, the fact that the taffeta for the top was an old prom dress
and had wrinkles set into it, even though I had washed the pieces after
deconstructing it. Because it seems to be acetate, I can't hot iron it...
and it water spots if I steam it. Crap! I finally decided that if it's got
bad wrinkle spots, I'll put some damn beads on the spot if I have to. So
long as it's not a long straight wrinkle....

You can always sew lace onto your umbrella to re-make it into a
more elegant parasol. Wrinkles might come out of the tafetta if you
steam it with a little white vinegar in the water. Make sure you have
a few days to "air" the material out as the vinegar does stink. As a
last resort, you might try having the material dry cleaned. A
professional dry cleaner has access to chemicals that most of us
don't.

Finally got it done!

So I managed to get the skirt made of the gorgeous dark purple iridescent
(black threads one way, pink the other) taffeta <lj user="oldhalloween">
sent me. But I had two problems: One, when I tried it on, it didn't hang
right- at all. Because of my vast waist and narrow hips, I had used the
pattern size that would fit my waist. That would have worked, apparently, if
the skirt was a gathered thing, but not so well when it's not. This problem
will be fixable with a little figuring, but I didn't have time to do that
figuring then. Two, I couldn't figure out how to hem the stuff! I hadn't
given it a thought before starting the project, but it looked like no matter
how tiny my hand stitches were they'd show, where a machine stitched hem
would look like crap. (sewists, how *do* you hem taffeta?!?) So I decided I
would go with the lovely grey-purple silk skirt that <lj user="rosamicula">
sent me.

This left me trying to get the top done. This is also of iridescent taffeta,
this one medium purple (blue threads one way, red the other), but this was
used fabric from an old prom dress I got for a dollar and cut up. This meant
the fabric was a little softer and more forgiving of fitting errors! Once
again using a pattern to fit my vast waist and planning on cutting the bust
down to fit my flat chest, I proceeded, and actually managed to fit it,
pinning it on myself, sticking myself, and finally trapping myself, which
necessitated my walking next door to my FILs and having him unbutton the
back to let me out of it. It has simple lines, so I put a lace overlay below
the neck. I machine stitched this down, stuffed it in a bag along with
embroidery floss, beads and pearls and shoved it in the motor home. On the
trip over to the wedding, I stitched away. I'd dyed some old pink lace
fabric (from another thrift store find cut up) to a purple to go with the
taffeta. I cut some of the roses out of the undyed leftover lace, and
stitched them down randomly on the purple lace. Then I took variegated silk
perl and feather stitched around in scroll-ey patterns. I was going to bead
it, but ran out of time. I was careful to not do one side at a time, but
finish one step before starting another so that at any point I could have
worn it!

I had taken along some black velvet high heeled slingbacks, but when I
learned that the bride, in her super elegant dress, was wearing Creepers
under it for comfort, I said fuck it and wore my black summer flats. They
were covered by the skirt anyway. Earrings were my usual alternating black
and white pearl studs; necklace was a vintage rhinestone number. I managed
to cram all my needful things- blood glucose meter, quick sources of sugar,
medications bottles, lipstick- into a purple taffeta purse that Walmart was
selling a couple of years ago in the makeup section (no, I don't know why
they were there) I put my hair up in a bun because it was too damned hot to
have it down and didn't do anything special with my makeup, which given the
amount of sweating I did was just as well.

So that is the fashion part of the wedding report. If for some reason anyone
wants to read about the adventure, it's here:

It's really really long.

And really, really great! Glad you all survived and it didn't seem to be as
bad as you thought it was going to be. So sorry to hear about the cat though
:(

I think the skirt was excellent! The top went well with your coloring.
Would love to see a better pic or 2 of closeups on the top!

Carefully.
I generally do a double fold, press, and then sew up through the space
between threads and over one thread, x2, skip a few threads then
repeat, catching the crease on the the wrong side. Takes freaking
forever, but it does look good. Going with the weave, especially on
fabrics that tend to show stitches more, generally gives the best
results. Sometimes fussiness is next to godliness.

I don't know how to hem taffeta without having it show but I certainly
agree that the machine-stitched hems suck.

A friend of mine wore borrowed garb to a local ren faire and although it
was lovely, overall and in general, from maybe 10 feet away, once I
noticed the crappy machine-stitched hem I couldn't stop noticing it.

This is, of course, from the POV of somebody experienced with sewing
specialty garments.

I suspect that the average patron's eye would have stopped just north of
the corset and that I'd have been branded as some sort of fibrotechnic
pervert for even noticing the hem of her gown.

Thank you. Sounds like a royal PITA! But I'm going to get it done by Yule.
The fabric is so totally gorgeous I *will* wear that skirt- once I figure
out how to make it fit and find enough champagne to make me patient enough
to hem it.

Hah hah! That's great. Did you point it out to her so she'd be paranoid?

I *did* machine hem the top- but I found a pretty scalloped stitch (the
machine I was borrowing has a zillion fancy stitches- and does automatic
buttonholes! It is a god, I tell you, a god!) and used a darker purple to do
it, so it looked like it was for decoration.

Too bad you don't own it, then you could find the hemstitching setting
and use that on the skirt. Hemstitching, maybe with a bit of ribbon
or lace insert woven though and you would have yourself a DIY fifty
dollar hemming job.
Takes practice to do it on silk though.
Soluble stabilizer is your friend.

If you like I can make my DH teach me how to cut and paste from a PDF
(or just send you the whole damn thing), and send you the section on
decorative stitching, which includes hemstitching, from the manual for
my old Pfaff. The machine doesn't have anything fancier on it than an
adjustable zig-zag, but the manual has directions for using that to do
a lot of fancy stuff. A little practice and you can save loads of
time over doing some things by hand. Saves loads of cash as opposed to
buying a machine you just tell what to do too.

Ouch. . .so do they ever give you an explanation as to why they didn't
invite him or not?
