First Annual Convergence Scholarship

time to begin. Convergence is only as much fun for me as the people who
attend, and I know that these are difficult economic times for many. In
addition, C15 is on my side of the country, and C16 will be too, so my
travel expenses are reduced. So I am offering $200 of my own money to
help one of my friends get to C15 who otherwise wouldn't be able to. I
know that isn't a lot, but hopefully it might be enough to swing it for
someone. I also know it's kinda late notice...I blame Whitby.
To apply, email me at the address above, leaving out the spamtrap part,
with subject Convergence Scholarship. Tell me why you could use the
scholarship and why I should give it to you instead of some other
schmuck. In the event of multiple applications, preference will be
given to long-time alt.gothic posters. (I am only posting this notice to
alt.gothic, alt.gothic.convergence, and as a locked post in my own LJ.
I am not posting it to any online communities.)
Deadline is one week from Friday - May 22nd. Decision will be made by
the following week, May 29th, which should still give the winner enough
time to make travel plans. Decisions are mine, decisions are final,
favoritism may be in force but not picking you doesn't mean I don't love
you, etc.
If you think this is an awesome idea and want to contribute, that would
also be great. Again, contact me at the email address above, without
the spamtrap part, and let me know how much you want to chip in. If you
pledge to contribute before the application deadline, you can help me
pick the winner. (Actual contributions will be collected later, in case
this turns out to be a silly idea and no one applies and there is no
winner.)

I'm sure I can dig up a laminate transfer. I know someone that can't
make it and I can mail a check when you've got a name to change to.

convergence community, and I'm going to extend the deadline to Sunday
midnight.
And if you've been thinking about applying, but have some weird hangup
about not wanting to take handouts or something, I just wanna say that
I'm not giving handouts, I'm contributing to a better Convergence, and
Convergence will be better with you there. Yes, you. So apply already.
The pot is currently $200, a free laminate, and a drink at the bar.

Oh I have one or two of those ;-)

I've been in situations like this on a smaller scale where a friend hasn;t
wanted to
come to the pub or go out becuase tehy haven't the money and don;t want to
be seen
as a sponger or a charity case.
So what I've done in the past is lent them the money and said pay me back
when you get a job or when you can.

Another way would be to suggest that it's a long term lone,
when the person can/does pay this loan back they should put it in "The Pot"
enabling another to take advantage of it next year, it could be an ongoing
thing replenished and maybe added to each year.
Of couse some might think they'll never be able to pay-it-back and that will
put them off
replying in the first place, which may defeat the purpose.

The first annual convergence scholarship will go to CarrieMonster and
Ian. CarrieMonster has put some hard work into c15 as well as into
convergences past and I think totally deserves a little extra help to
get to Long Beach. (Not that this wasn't a hard choice! I hate having
only one winner...everyone should get to go, but I don't have that much
money. :( I hope the economy improves soon and that everyone who isn't
going to be able to make it this year is rolling in the dough next year.)

You are so kind to help us get there.
Next year, I too hope to be rolling in the dough (and to have Ian
employeed again) and pay it forward!
