PART II: NEWSGROUP BASICS

NEWSGROUP NAME: aus.culture.gothic
STATUS: Unmoderated
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The Gothic subculture in Australia
CHARTER: This newsgroup is devoted to discussions of the music,
fashion, ideologies and interests of those who consider
themselves within the Gothic subculture in Australia.
Its creation is intended to allow for a better forum for
the discussion of specifically local issues (such as
local bands, shops, issues, etc) which may not be of
interest to those living in other countries.
CREATION DATE: Monday, 4 December, 1995.
CREATION BY: RFD posted by Peter T. Caffin in November '95;
newgrouped by Mike Groenewig, the Workstation & Network
Officer at Murdoch University's CNS.

Aus.Culture.Gothic is a relatively new newsgroup on the scene, and it's
general aim is to compliment the existing newsgroups such as: alt.gothic,
alt.gothic.fashion, uk.people.gothic, and alt.binaries.gothic. FAQS are
available for many of these newsgroups. This is a small list:

* The Alt.Gothic FAQ
* The Aus.Culture.Gothic FAQ (most recent version)
* The Alt.Gothic.Fashion FAQ

PART III: QUESTIONS ASKED FREQUENTLY

Q1: What's the weather like over in Australia?

A1: There are a couple of methods for finding this sort of information out,
none of which is really newsworthy to be discussed in aus.culture.gothic.
First, there's the newsgroup soc.culture.australian, which has a FAQ file.
This will give you the background info on the climate here.

There's also the gopher service, which provides information on the current
weather patterns in all Australian cities and country areas updated
generally every four hours, and includes weather maps. This is provided at
gopher://babel.ho.BoM.GOV.AU:70/00/Australian%20Weather%20Information/.

Q2: What do those symbols and bizarre abbreviations that I see in posts to
the newsgroup mean?

A2: ASCII grins, The Goth Code as well as the standard abbreviations that
you commonly find in newsgroups are sometimes employed here: Their use was,
originally, to conserve bandwidth and time (back in the days of 300
bits-per-second modems, and such), so that emphasis could be placed on
certain phrases, and certain phrases could be used without so many
characters had to be sent.

These days, people use them because (a) They make it seem like they've been
on the Internet for a long time, and (b) it saves them time in typing.

These are some of the most common abbreviations and symbols in use:

;-) Wink
:-) Smile
8-) Wide-eyed grin

Q3: What's the goth scene generally like in Perth

A3:{Answered by Peter T. Caffin} Clubs here come and go, some leaving
memories with others sinking into obscurity. The problem in Perth seems to
be that as a subculture, we're more a niche market.. and a fussy one, at
that! A new club opens, has people come for the first few nights and then
cease coming back when it fails to meet up with their expectations. Few
nightclub proprietors seem willing to spend the time to investigate the
needs or wants of the crowd. Other times, nightclubs will realise their
importance as the only club devoted to this genre of music and attempt to
take advantage of this position to profiteer. Examples of nightspots that
_have_ succeeded are: The Red Parrot (despite its alleged lack of safety),
Neon Sid's nights at Geremiah's (despite The Firm not allowing pamphlet
drops ;->), and Interzone (despite the allegedly poor management skills of
the organisers). The key to a successful nightclub in Perth seems to be
having enough space away from the music for people to talk and get
together.

With regard to other scenes, Perth's is a rabidly diverse one. It includes
many who are not specifically "gothic," but, do consider themselves
alternative enough that for them JJJ is heavily mainstream. People you're
likely to meet at goth clubs range from goths, punks, the occasional
friendly skinhead, grungies, and hangers-on. It's a closely knit scene in
Perth, though.. small enough that gossip can run the scene in a few months,
yet, large enough that there's always the joy of meeting new people if you
want to and still not know everyone.

Q4: What's the scene like in Adelaide, then?

A4: {Answered by Michelle Wauchope} Adelaide.. home of churches, the middle
class family with 2.4 children..except we have the highest incidence of
sick crimes in Australia ( ITS IN THE WATER! they cry) Known for the old
boy mentality and rife conservatism one could say that the Goth population
is a.) not large..especially with no living scene and the large Melbourne
bound exodus and b.) probably conservative compared to the scenes in other
cities.

Personal opinion: 8 hole docs are STILL standard dress, many buckles and
full on fantastic dress doesnt get worn because it may be too over the
top.. we stand out just in a basic black jeans-and t-shirt combination when
one realises that the majority of Adelaide citizens wear chambray... hmmm
:-)

Q5: What are the other cities scenes like?

A5: This question is open to be answered by anyone with a bit of free time
on their hands.

Melbourne..Er, hrmmm.. Makes Perth look like a small country town,
apparently. Quite wet during winter.Sorta drab. We need a better review of
this city's scene than this.. So, please send some email me to contribute.
Sydney is the biggest city, population-wise, in Australia. Has the Sydney
Opera House and other stuff. No sodding idea what the scene is like. Please
send email to put in a better review!
Perth is gothier than Brisbane! Please email me, with pertinant details if
you disagree *hint*hint* Slev, et al. Seriously, apparently Brisbane and
Perth are pretty similar in a lot of ways. There's also an active
brisigoths mailing list, which has been parsing messages since at least
1993.

Q6: What does Gothic mean?

A6: Oh, look, yes we know that there was a tribe called the Visigothics,
and yes we know that there is a strand in architecture called Gothic..
That's not the point. For now, just take it as read that Gothic is the name
of a subculture that exists world-wide. The topic of where the name comes
from is dealt with better in the Alt.Gothic FAQ, a copy of which exists at
http://cleo.murdoch.edu.au/~ptcaffin/arc/gothfaq.htm among other places.

With regard to the the subculture, peoples' opinions vary on whether gothic
is "an attitude," "a fashion style," a "collective interest in similar
things" or "just this group of guys and gals, y'know."

Q7: Someone's just written something I disagree with _vehemently_. This
person has just _gotta_ be flamed.. What should I do?

A7: Alt.Gothic has experienced what can happen when people just keep
flaming; the number of articles attacking a set of posters becomes greater
than the numbers actually writing on topic (!). As the numbers on the
Internet grow, this will no doubt this will become a growing problem on the
aus.* newsgroups.

Y'see, there are some people out there who _thrive_ on being flamed. Kinda
sad, huh? They get their kicks by seeing what sort of reactions they can
get from people. This can close down newsgroups, and the practice of trying
it is called "Invasion." Pioneers of this profession were a bunch of pratts
from a newsgroup called alt.syntax.tactical (who later made alt.bigfoot
their home). Whether the pratts from a.s.t. still exist as a group today is
a mystery. However dickheads still use similar tactics in order to create
havoc. These are the sorts of creeps that you'd normally ignore because
they're sad and pathetic with nothing of value to say.On a newsgroup, when
someone "trolls" for reactions, the best way to respond is to simply ignore
them.

If you really _can't_ do this, because you know that you can respond in a
way that's (a) informative to others, or, (b) particularly entertaining,
then by all means post a response. However, if your response is neither (a)
nor (b) then it may be you that next receives a grilling. If they keep
posting to the group, and become really irritating, then it's time to use a
Kill File. Most newsreaders allow you to killfile according to criterion
such as name, email address (or part thereof) and a thread's subject title.
They're useful little beasts.

Some people on alt.gothic are creating an Anti-Troll FAQ, which should
become available sometime soon.

Q8: How do I identify an Australian net.goth?

A8: The words net.goth (or net.goth.au) in lower case written on the jacket
arm just below the shoulder is recommended by the alt.gothic FAQ. This is a
load of tripe. More realistically, you _may_ find people from
aus.culture.gothic wearing a net.goth t-shirt, but, I wouldn't bet on it
(it's still not seen as very goth to admit to being a goth, so having a
t-shirt with the word "goth" on it is still a fashion statement yet to hit
it big).

The truth is: there's no true way of knowing whether the person standing
next to you at a club is a net.goth or not. Scary isn't it! ;-). To
recognise an Australian net.goth you'll possibly need to tag along to a
net.goth outing in your local area. These happen from time to time, and are
usually advertised in the newsgroup two weeks ahead of time.

Q9: What is KMFDM an abbreviation for?

A9: This is perhaps the most annoyingly consistent thread to have plagued
the alternative newsgroups. KMFDM stands for "Keiner Mitleid Fuer Die
Mehrheit" or alternatively "Kein Mehrheit Fur Die Mitleid." Both translated
into English loosely, mean: "No Pity For The Majority.." It does _not_ mean
"Kill Mother Fucking Depeche Mode," (much as we'd like it to), "Kittens
Must Find Diluted Milk," "Krupps Must Felch Doctor Moriarty" or any of the
other silly accronyms it's been assigned by people. Finally, let the mantra
be, "read the FAQ" instead.

Q10: I want to take a look in a gothic nightclub for the first time. What
should I wear?

A10: So, you want to explore the gothic subculture? Cool and groovy. What
you really don't want to do is stand out too much in the crowd, just yet.
There's a difference between 'showing your individuality' and missing the
point entirely. Goth is a subculture, and all subcultures have their social
cues that indicate identity. There are some fundamental things to consider
with regard to colour-schemes, basic styles and footwear.

Well, frankly speaking, black and white are the colours to go for.
Sometimes, you can mix the darker purples or red, but, black should be
predominant. For guys, you'll be able to get away with something like black
jeans, a white long-sleeved button-up shirt and a trenchcoat or black
jacket. Some sort of boots (not sandals, sneakers or shoes) are
recommended. For girls, depending on your style, either a nice looking
black evening dress with fishnet stockings (go for silver jewelry if you're
wearing any) or else you can go for a similar look as suggested for the
guys, above.

Q11: What are some basic rules of etiquette in the Australian goth scene
that I should keep in mind?

A11: Something you should be aware of is the extent to which the scene in
all states in Australia are 'politically correct.' This doesn't mean that
we all use dickie terms like "vertically challenged," etc. It just means
that racism, sexism, homophobia and the like are all pretty heavily frowned
upon. If you treat someone with bigotry, it will get around. You may be
lucky enough to just be ignored.. Depending on who you do this to, you may
pick up an injury.

That said, violence is generally abhored. However, because goths are so
closely linked with other subcultures (they often stick together,
particularly in smaller cities), many here will have other
part-affiliations. People at goth clubs may also hang out in skinhead
clubs, punk parties, grungey hangouts or whatever (or have good friends
that do). It's a varied field. Essentially, show others good manners and
don't get drunk enough to get in a fight. Fights are rare, but, our
memories of the few that occur are long.

Other things to think about? Well, yeah, it could be said that there's a
pecking order, much the same as in any group. Some of the people I know who
are considered high in the echelons are really quite tedious and
narrow-minded (some are not); some who are considered low in the ranks can
often become the best of best friends can be (while others are uncouth
creeps). Don't think in terms of the so-called pecking order, treat people
the way you'd like to be treated yourself, and you should be right in most
cases.

Another Perth magazine. Has been going for quite a while, under the

be shite (photocopy quality), but, it's slowly getting better. The Feb 96
issue has an "interview" with this FAQ's maintainer (me) which I still
haven't had a chance to check out.

So far, they're just starting out. Every Saturday Eve. Just went to the New
Year's Eve 95 night. Went well.. played a bit too much Industrial for my
liking, but, there were a few crowd pleasers. The entry is out the back,
via the side alley-way. Looks seedy and disreputable (ie, fantastic
atmosphere!) on the inside. it's a private club, so you'll either need to
tag along with a member or sign up yourself. Provided you don't look like a
bogan or antisocial (or about to cause trouble), you should be right. It's

RTR-FM: at 92.1 fm.
"Dark Wings" - Mon 11pm to Tues 1am; "Virtual Radio" - Tues Midnight to Wed
6am. Both are pretty damned good :-).

100-FM: at (you guessed it) 100 fm
"Fremantle" Saturday nights 11-2am. Presented (at the moment) by Nick, Ben,
Kris, and Torban. Music played is goth, darkwave and experimental.
Apparently there's a bit of a turn-over in DJs with this station, however,
it seems like the `goth shift' is a regular event that the station likes to
keep at that time.

ATROCITY: Shop 10, Cinecentre Arcade, Murray St, Perth. Tel: 325 2772.
A small store, but, with a well-chosen range of scene-favourite styles of
music. I was drooling at their selection of music available; I was
impressed. Very limited selection of t-shirts, though.

78'S: 884 Hay St, Perth.
They sell t-shirts and music. They don't have a second-hand collection,
which is a shame. They generally price their stuff to the full RRP;
expensive.

DADA RECORDS: 36 Pier St, Perth. Tel: 325 2666
A very large collection of vinyl and CDs, as well as a large t-shirt
collection, etc. Most of the good stuff is seen in their second-hand
collection, IMHO. Prices are pretty reasonable.

HOUSE OF WAX RECORD STORE: 808 Hay St, Perth. Tel: 481 0267.
Good value; nice range of music in CD and vinyl.. not too many cassettes,
however. Lots of good stuff. I hate it when Helen takes me down there. I
spend too much :-).

RITUAL: Pavilion Tavern (upstairs), 580 George St. City Thursday nights,
10:30pm -> ~4:00am
Sydney's most gothic club. Plays classic and less well-known goth, plus a
small amount of industrial. More Christian Death than any other club. :-)
Medium-sized dancefloor, quite a few tables, a long bar, and several pool
tables. A "nicer" venue than Shrine or Armoury, maybe a little too nice? My
favourite club. ***1/2

DARK DECADES: CJs Tavern, Kent St. city, Opposite Sektor 7 Saturday night,
10pm-late
Playing 80's and 90's goth and industrial music. Small floor, small crowds,
lots of tables (indoor and out), pub-price drinks, generally nice
atmosphere. The music makes up for its down points. ***1/2

SHRINE: Agincourt Hotel (upstairs and downstairs), 871 George St. City
Friday nights, ?? to ??
This is an inaccurate review because Shrine has changed since I last went
there! It used to be one floor of almost invariably industrial music, and
sucked. However, it is now spread over two floors, and is apparently much
more goth upstairs. The Dungeon Bar (the downstairs bit) is the best
looking club venue I've ever seen - great airbrushed Giger-esque art all
over the walls, little alcoves to sit in, very dark and smoky - great!!
*1/2 when I went, but I've heard it's much better now.

ARMOURY: VIP Club (upstairs), 2a Roslyn St. King's Cross Saturday nights,
11:00pm -> ~6:00am
Claims to be a "gothic and industrial" club, but in reality is 7+ hours of
industrial and maybe ten goth songs. And they're the same ten every week.
If you don't like industrial, don't go to the Armoury under any
circumstances! If you DO, then go, but be advised that it's mostly
techno-ish industrial (ie Thrill Kill Kult), not the more metal-ish stuff.
I hate this club, but a lot of people like it. Also be warned that it's in
the very heart of the King's Cross sleaze district, not much fun to get to
if you're fully gothed out. Has a couple of tables, a small bar, and an
enormous dancefloor. Seedy as fuck. * (but a lot of people like it more
than I did.)

MORTICIA'S: Morthisha's Shop 24 Royal Arcade Melbourne 3000 Tel: 03-654

Sells clothes and jewellery mostly and you can go there to pick up details
on any up coming goth events in Melbourne. The ppl its run by organise our
annual Gothic Ball. The clothes are, obvisouly gothic and cater for both
men and women. Plenty of dresses, shirts, capes, skirts. The dresses are
particulary stunning. This is a very popular shop with Melbourne goths
mostly due to the wonderful quality and great style of the clothes. A
veritable assortment of little jewellery and stuff can also be found
here... they have some great stuff. If in Melbourne, always a good idea to
check it out... An alternative reviewer commented: "Very nice clothes shop.
Had accessories, too. Shop owner did her own clothes designs."

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS:
This is clothing only, and womens. Run by D'Magda, the best way to find out
about it would be to e-mail me, as it now runs via her, rather than a
store...She specialises in medievial clothing. I own heaps of her stuff and
think shes prolly got the best goth gear in the city. The clothes are
really well made and look stunning. You can get dresses, corsets, capes,
skirts and shirts.. Any Melbourne goths should definatley see her stuff.

CHARLIE WEAVERS: Barkly St, St. Kilda. (near the cnr of Acland St)
This shop has a mixture of cool stuff. From clothes to jewellery to

stuff, heres the place to go..

LOADED: Queensberry St, in the city.
Friday nights at Dream. Two levels, upstairs is Indie/Alternative crap.
Downstairs is gothic/industrial. The music often is more industrial trancey
than goth, but its a mix and a good one, nonetheless. Its a smallish place
and the dance floor can get kinda crowded. Theres pool tables and a cute
cyber sperm mural on the wall (dont ask). The atmosphere is pretty good and
all up you can have a good night... Make sure to grab a Loaded Shaker while
you're there (yummm).

ABYSS: Check the Yellow or White Pages
Wooo. Great club, most popular goth club in Melbourne. The music is a mix
of goth and industrial with some alternative tunes thrown in here and
there. Some weeks you can check out the local acts as they have bands
playing. Some recently have been Discordia and InSect. They make the
bestest cocktails at this club.. yummo. :) The atmosphere is great and
pretty friendly.

OXIDE: Commercial rd, Prahran.
I havent checked it out yet... I hear they have bands and stuff there too,
and a couple of levels, one badn level and one Dj'ed level. Its supposed to
be pretty good, but as I said I cant make any personal comments on it...
Its advertised as "Melbournes newest goth/industrial mind fuck night".

POP! at Styx on Gouger St, City.
This is for all the indy kids and trashy retro 80Us fans . Blur Oasis Kylie
Betty Boo REM I'm not sure what else, its been months! Open on Saturday
Nights untill late.

PRIMARY at Proscenium on Blythe St, City (just off Hindley)
At the moment are trying hard to woo back the POP! defectors and so have
dropped a major component of their classic goth and popular music..read
here Depeche Mode, Ministry, New Order 12" etc. Everyone is bored with the
music..it is repetitive with the WRONG music thrown in occaisionally..e.g.
Itch-E and Scratch-E Sweetness and Light. Also they have done away with the
3 am industrial set altogether at the present time...

Mephisto Walz - Alien Sex Fiend - Front 242 - Skinny Puppy...need I go on?
needless to say this stuff doesnt get a look in at the clubs that are
presently running...

LITTLE HOUSE OF TREASURE - on Rundle Street...
good selection of 2nd hand clothing and new stuff with labels like
enchantress and industrial silk screen t-shirts..but it is pricey.

GLOBAL VILLAGE - Victoria Arcade, MYER centre, or off Southern Cross Arcade

TODAYS LOOKS - MYER centre,

display in store.

GENIE SHOES - Shoe maker extraordinaire..on Hindmarsh Square, City.
