Scillonians, as the islanders like to be known, say that over the past
year the needs of local people have repeatedly been put second so that
the Duchy can add further profits to the £13 million a year that it
provides in revenues to Prince Charles.
The latest and most pressing cause of anger is the decision by the
Duchy to enter the holiday-home business on the islands for the first
time. It has renovated a granite two-bedroom home that has
traditionally been used by local teachers on St Mary's, the largest
island. Following the facelift, the Duchy has put the cottage up for
rent as a holiday home for as much as £1,500 a week.
Furthermore, the Duchy - apparently under the personal recommendation
of Prince Charles - employed Annabel Elliot, the Duchess of Cornwall's
sister and an interior designer, to give the cottage an extensive
makeover.
The results are stunning, and the Guard House, perched on the cliff
above the island's capital, Hugh Town, is advertised for rent on the
Duchy's website. The property was visited by Prince Charles and the
Duchess during an official visit shortly after their wedding in May.
The islanders, however, are furious. Mike Brown, the chairman of the
100-member Duchy Tenants' Association, said that he was dismayed when
he learnt that local people were going to be deprived of the chance of
living at the Guard House. With many islanders earning less than
£10,000 a year, it is hard for them to pay more than £100 a week in
rent.
Mr Brown, 45, who was born on the island and is the tenant of a 40-acre
bulb farm owned by the Duchy, said: "I was appalled and disgusted when
I learnt what the Duchy was doing. This is an inappropriate direction
for the Duchy to go and it sets a dangerous precedent when we have a
tremendous shortage of housing on the island."
For centuries, the Duchy owned all the land and properties on the Isles
of Scilly but in recent times ownership has become more complex. Tresco
is leased to the Dorrien Smith family, who run it commercially as an
up--market tourist island.
Many homes on St Mary's have been sold off, so the Duchy now owns 330 -
just under 30 per cent - of the 1,150 residential properties on the
islands.
The Duchy continues, however, to own all the land on the other
inhabited islands of St Martin's, St Agnes and Bryher, where there is
also ill-feeling against Prince Charles.
On Bryher, which has just 77 residents, islanders are angry that a
property - the Little House - has been earmarked as the Duchy's second
holiday home on the Isles of Scilly.
The two-bedroom cottage is undergoing renovation after its latest
tenants - a family of four - were told they could not renew their
lease. Now it is expected to fetch more than £1,000 a week as a
holiday home.
Gren Pender, 27, who was born and brought up on Bryher, was hoping to
be able to rent the cottage as his first home. In October Mr Pender, a
handyman, is marrying Katie Hargreaves, 23, a hotel receptionist.
"I am very angry about this - the Prince of Wales has got his
priorities wrong," Mr Pender said last week.
"I would not have been so disappointed if it had gone to a Scillonian
but for it to go as a holiday let is not on." The couple are now
planning to "emigrate" to the Isle of Wight after their wedding.
On St Agnes, which has 89 residents, there is still ill-feeling after
the Duchy advertised a property on the island - and two on neighbouring
islands - in Country Life magazine last year on 10-year leases.
Islanders say that the properties were costing up to £15,000 a year -
far beyond the means of locals.
A spokesman for Clarence House denied yesterday that islanders had
received a raw deal from the Duchy and said that many tenants had
below-market rents.
"In the past two years, four new properties have been created by the
Duchy for the local-only market," she said.
"On the Isles of Scilly as a whole, 25 per cent of properties are used
as holiday lets or second homes yet the Duchy has just two out of more
than 300. That's less than 1 per cent of our properties.
"Furthermore, when the Prince of Wales visited the islands in May he
had discussions with the Cornwall Rural Housing Association about
providing more affordable homes on St Mary's and the other islands."

Hilarious, eh? For someone who worked part time in a junk shop, you
appear to have a very high opinion of your own judgment of the successful
career of another woman.

Used goods shop, eh?
"About Annabel Elliot interior design
& antiques
Annabel Elliot has been in the antique business for 30 years and has dealt
in everything from vintage clothing to serious paintings and furniture. She
started with exhibitions in New York and then for ten years, within a
partnership, opened a large and highly successful shop in Dorset. During the
past two years, she has traded independently, opening a large warehouse and
offices near Salisbury, Wiltshire. The independence allows her the freedom
to work as a decorator for an international clientele. Her taste is relaxed
and not in any way stuffy, dealing in everything from 17th century
tapestries to lucite tables from the 1970sŠ
Others have described her style as relaxed and romantic, as well as eclectic
and cutting edge, hence many of her clients tend to be in their 20ąs and
30ąs. Her strength is that she doesnąt try to impose her own taste, but
works very closely with them, interpreting their ideas in her own inimitable
way. Annabeląs sources are taken from all over the world and she has a
particular love of textiles and colour. With the contacts she has made on
her many travels, both in this country and abroad, she is able to find both
the antique and the retro from a great many sources."

Nobody was hurt in that minor scrape and despite your continual references
to it, the police found there was no case to bring. You're beginning to run
out of material, Phyllis.

that explains her fat ass.
she really pisses me off - all her rants on here - when i know the
truth about her, lying two faced cow. she has had ample time to
apologize to me for her lies, yet refuses to do so.
she messed with and lied about the wrong person = me.
i notice she never says anything directly to me, she does manage to
get a dig in at me in other posts - she had better watch out, if she
goes too far, I will not hold back this time around.
she is a nasty two faced evil HAG who needs to focus on her and her
own families failings instead of attacking people on here, people she
does not know. amazing what she does to cover up and lie about herself
on here.
(i e-mailed you more of the london pics).

Great, the ones of the Brompton hospital visit?
Thanks!
I know she doesn't say anything directly. I was just thinking as i read
your post. How her children coped with an insane mother like that? I
mean if she flew off the handle like she does with people she gets
impatient on here with, what about an innocent child...and i guess
there is NO WAY they could go to the press because apparently that is a
NO NO in her house. Espcially if they are a child with issues and a
Royal is around wanting to shake their hand, maybe the only nice hand
they have recieved in years. I just pray they didn't take her ways
with them into their next relationships and marriages.
