Painting of Diana To Go On The Block At London's Portrait Gallery

Former ballerina, Marialuisa Marino, talked of her tears and emotions as she
painted a posthumous portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales holding flowers, in
order to raise money for Diana's beloved ballet. The pix will go on the block
Thursday at London's National Portrait Gallery by Lord Archer of
Weston-super-Mare. The money raised will be used to fund City Ballet of London,
the successor company to London City Ballet of which the Princess was patron
for 13 years. She has painted Nelson Mandela, Sir Malcolm Arnold, the Marquess
of Bath, Paloma Picasso, Dame Alicia Markova and cellist Julian Lloyd Webber,
who will play before the auction. She was asked to do the portrait by the City
Ballet director after the death of Diana and feared becoming too emotional said
PA news. She said she wept as she painted and chose not to do Diana with a
smile as she kept in mind the " real Diana " behind the public persona
including Kensington Palace in the pix. She also has given two prints to the
sons of Diana, Princess of Wales , Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana loved
ballet and chose to keep it as one of her charities after her divorce from
Charles.

The portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales was sold tonight to raise funds for
her beloved ballet company raising £7,000 for City Ballet of London, was
painted after the princess's death and was auctioned at the National Portrait
Gallery by novelist Lord Archer, with other art works by former ballerina
Marialuisa Marino. The winning bid was from her son Ricardo and his wife Mimi.
