STAR 10/03....

A few years back this actor abruptly left a popular sitcom and it was explained
that he wanted to pursue a movie career. Now the awful truth can be told: He
was FIRED from the top 10 show for having an affair with an underage boy! He
fell in love with a 17-year-old and was foolish enough to flaunt his jailbait
romance on the set. His costars were appalled, and a powerful leading actress
threatened to quit unless the guy was canned. He and his toyboy are no longer
together and his career is in the dumpster.

I know this is wrong, but the only actor that I can think of who left a top 10
show abruptly was Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

i don't think so. i mean, did we hear anything about him leaving to pursue
movies? he did make movies, but he seemed to jump into a string of guest roles
for tv.

although if he was fired and they were appalled by him then that would
certainly explain the ridiculous send off that they gave him. that episode
sucked.

That's was my first thought but he specifically said he was leaving because
of school and made a big deal that it wasn't about a movie career. And I
checked IMDB, he was only 16 or 17 when he left Home Improvement, so the
jailbait clue doesn't fit.

Did Tim Allen quit Home Improvement or did the show get cancelled? Just
wondering, because there have been rumors about his taste for young boys.

How about Grant Shaud?

He's in TV Guide this week talking about how he had to fade away a bit after he
left Top 10 sitcom "Murphy Brown" to pursue a movie career a few years ago.

Grant Shaud played the neurotic Miles Silverberg. The show was in the top 10
and at it's peak when he suddenly decided to leave. He's also pretty cryptic
about his love life, saying he's "lived" with beautiful women, but not much
else.

Would Candice Bergen be the "powerful leading actress" that forced the
departure? I can't see Candice doing something like that.

I think this is a very good guess. I was trying to think of male stars
leaving top10 sitcoms, and realized there were not a lot of them...

(Of course I never watched the final episodes of MP, but believe you when
you say that he left ;-))

I can't remember his name but how about the guy who played Miles Silverberg on
Murphy Brown? I don't remember any talk about him wanting to pursue a movie
career, but one day he was there and the next he wasn't. And I can imagine
Candice Bergen being the powerful leading actress who threatened to quit if he
wasn't fired. And I would also consider his career in the toilet since I
haven't seen him in anything since leaving that show.

The BI says he was fired from the show when it appeared that
he left, but he was with Home Improvement until it ended.
The only one who left it early was JTT, and he was underage
which means that his boyfriend would not have been jailbait.

No, that would be David Garrison, who played Steve Rhoades,
Marcy's first husband. Never heard of any rumors, but he
certainly left suddenly. On the other hand, he didn't make
any movies until *after* he was in another TV series, three

Except Candace Bergen was really crazy about Grant Shaud and tried to get him
back for the final episode. And third hand stories I've heard is that his
fellow actors thought he was out of his mind to leave $20,000 a week. Shaud
is fairly neurotic, and Bergen really liked him, so even though it fits on the
surface it doesn't fit what I've heard about him, the cast and why he left.

He lived for awhile with Jayne Leeves, who plays Daphne on Frazier. On Murphy
Brown she had a recurring role as Miles' girlfriend.

Moreover, "powerful leading actress" hardly describes what's her name. Even
if he were 20 or so, people would hardly raise an eyebrow over him dating
someone 17.

I suppose it could possibly be Grant Shaud of Murphy Brown, although I
think he's more of a theatre type than movies. Powerful certainly describes
Bergan. OTOH, she wouldn't *have* to threaten to quit.

Of course neither Murphy Brown, nor Home Improvement were still top ten
shows when the gents in question left.

My best guess: Alicia Goranson of Roseanne. :)

McGinley played her second husband Jefferson. Her first husband was Steve,

He did leave, but I don't think he abruptly left. And there wasn't a big
deal about him going to do movies. He wanted to do other things, but it
wasn't a David Caruso-type thing. And he stayed for most of the series.

Didn't someone leave Suddenly Susan rather unexpectedly a few years
back (aside from the guy who offed himself)..... and who better to try
to protect an underage sex object than Brooke? Then again, Cybill
also seems like the type who'd put her foot down in that situation...

Maybe, but that was only for one season. Judd Nelson left after three years
in 1999 and Suddenly Susan was far from popular. Also, he always seemed
like a big poon hound to me. He used to come to Dallas a lot a few years
ago (when he was dating Shannen Doherty), and frequented a bar that I worked
and he left w/ a different girl every night. On more than one occasion, he
and a girl would tie up a bathroom for 30 minutes w/ people beating on the
door because there were only 2 unisex bathrooms. Shannen came in once and
caught him and came close to beating the shit out of him. Lucky for him, 2
bartenders pulled her off of him and threw her out before she could do any
real damage. I know this doesn't mean he couldn't be into guys but I just
don't see it.

And his career is far from being in the dumpster, with well over a dozen
movie roles since Roseanne ended and a new sitcom (even if the sitcom
itself may well end up there). Seeing as it's the Star, there's a good
chance the whole thinkg is just full of crap.

low for tv actors. Especially on a top ten show.>>

I don't know if that's the exact figure. Shaud had worked in NYC off B'way
theatre along with a lot of other L.A. TV types (including Robert Pastorelli of
Murphy Brown, for instance, and the guy who was on L.A. and now is on West
Wing?) Anyhow, a lot of the NY types are used to not having $$ and really know
what they've got when they land a TV show. To turn your back on "20,000 a
week!" when you're not even carrying the load and you get a big hiatus is just
nuts to a lot of them, and they thought Grant was nuts (but he was always nuts)
A lot of them would just joke about how insane he was, and use 20,000 a week
as the number to make their point. I don't know if it was literal or not.

Again, I don't know if he's the blind item because the leading lady was a big
supporter of his (Bergen) and sorry he left and would have preferred if he'd
returned for the final episode.

He was publicly fired, though. More or less for drugs and spousal abuse; he

I only got half way thru the 69 posts on this item, so excuse me if
this has already been guessed. From what I have read so far, no one is
going the same direction as my first inclination.

My guess is Alan Autry who left "Grace Under Fire". It was a top 10
sitcom (and how quickly has it been forgotten), He left in the middle
of the series, and Brett Butler wielded alot of power on the set. Then
there is the term "FIRED" in the BI which could refer to the title of
the sitcom.

Now of course he was Bubba Skinner on "Heat of the Night" and as
Carlos Brown he was a QB for Green Bay Packers. I haven't been able to
tie either of these facts to the blind item.

Plus, I believe Grant Shaud announced way ahead of time that he was
leaving the series. The story wasn't that he was going into movies. I
believed he said he had no plans of acting.

But, didn't Robert Pastorelli leave the series early? But his movie
career is going well, I believe. He had a quality role in the new
Jamie Foxx movie "Bait".

And I don't believe Candice would do that.

He's also running for mayor of Fresno, according to the IMDb and is married
with kids. Neither of which means squat in terms of liking jailbait, but
likely does in terms of being public with it on set.

But it's certainly a good guess. I was thinking of Grace Under Fire as a
possible series, but the only departing actor I could think of was the kid
traumatized by Butler's breasts.

With so many responses as David Caruso, I'm curious who the powerful
actress was on NYPD Blue. Also he did leave to do movies I know he was
not successful at it but that is persumably why he did leave. Also I
seem to remember a lot of talk about it at the time and it did not seem
all that abrupt.

He wasn't running for mayor then, and perhaps he's cleaned
up his act, at least overtly, and he thinks no one from
those days will talk. In fact, that may be the best reason
for this BI coming out *now*: someone from the series,
angered that he's running for mayor with such a shady past,
dropped the little tidbit to the gossip column.

I think it's the best one yet. Especially with "FIRED" in
the title. A very, very good guess.

Well, if we must. :)

This is semi-FOAF, but it's a bit different than most, as the friend is a
journalist who heard it from a colleague. I have complete confidence in my
friend having told me the truth of what he heard, but I can't vouch any
further than that, since neither he nor I know how the colleagues knew it.

He was in Pasadena for the TV critics press tour a few years ago, following
the Hugh Grant incident, and he overheard a colleague at another table say
something like, "What I can't understand is how there's such a fuss over
this, and nothing's ever happened to Harry Anderson from cruising Santa
Monica Blvd for hustlers."

In male prostitution, street hustlers are generally under 20 street kids.
Older ones would work through ads, etc.

I have an even more bizarre story about that. I once had a part-time job
that involved selling classified ads for an alternative paper, including
escort ads.

One time I got a call from a hustler's manager. His mother. They lived out
in the suburbs and she did his advertising and managed his appointments.
She reminded me of Scott Thompson's Franny on Kids in the Hall.

It became truly surreal as this typical-sounding housewife and mother
started consulting with me on changing the wording. "Well David, do you
think the guys would like it if we said..." (My memory has mercifully
blocked that out).

It reminded me of that scene in Jeffrey where he imagines phoning his
parents and his mother asks if he's a top or a bottom.

Ok, I'll concede your point about running for mayor, but he was hardly a
breakout star who with delusions of movie stardom, like a Shelley Long.
He'd also already been working steadily in movies since 1978 as a character
actor.

A personal bias of mine also enters into this, as it's the Star. Ever since
they published blatantly false "eyewitness" accounts, including what was
going on in the cockpit of the JFKjr plane crash, I'm extremely leary of
them.

Except that it doesn't say he was a breakout star with
delusions of movie stardom. It says he was an actor on a
popular sitcom whose leaving was explained that he wanted to
pursue a movie career. And he did: he made two made-for-TV
movies, both as the same character he played on "In the Heat
of the Night."

On the other hand, he doesn't particularly ping on my
gaydar, so I have no vested interest in him having been the
culprit. I just haven't heard any suggestions that fit the

When he was fired, I meant. In other words, the BI talked
about him walking away from a Top 10 show when he was fired;
but while Suddenly Susan hit the Top 10 a few times (though
not consistently), the show was low in the ratings by the
time he was fired. And he didn't leave the series to get
into movies; he had come *from* the movies, and was fired
because he was temperamental and irresponsible---and since
they were revamping the show after whatsisname's suicide,
they pitch out Judd at the same time.

at the time he left "Grace," the rumor was that Brett was jealous of
his character becoming so popular as to outshine her character, and
since Brett was whacked out on booze and whatever at the time, she got
