I tried out for the "Weakest Link" today in Nashville and I'm a
helluva lot more stupid than I thought. But it was only 20 questions,
and I think I got about 11-12 right. Darn. I didn't make it to the
final 16 to play the "mock" show. G'bye!

I'm going to post a few of the questions that I remember. But we only
got 30 seconds for each question, and if you didn't hear it correctly
the first time, you had to wait until they repeated it 15 seconds into
it. <excuses, excuses> You wrote your answers, but no crossed out
words. It had to be the first and only answer. <excuses, excuses>
The one question I'm really pissed I missed is the 2000 People
Magazine "Sexiest Man Alive", that was the only person to make the
cover twice. Damn! That should be first grade stuff for AGC. lol
<more excuses...>

Okay...paraphrased questions - remember, answer quick!

1) What French Impressionist was known for his paintings of Taiwanese
women?

2) Who's 3rd Theory stated "For every action is an equal and opposite
reaction?"

3) Who plays Buffy in the hit "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"?

4) What country had "Memphis" as a capital in ancient history?

5) Who was People Magazine's 2000 Sexiest Man Alive, the only one to
be chosen for the second time?

6) In the 1979 NCAA playoffs, what college team with the moniker of
"Sycamores" did Larry Bird lead?

7) What sport has a 9 x 5 foot playing area?

8) What do you call a star that has such a massive density that
doesn't even let light escape?

9) In 1960, what was the name of the organization formed to determine
the price regulation of oil producing nations?

10) Who wrote Robinson Caruso?

11) What hollow pasta, cut diagonally at each end, is named for a
writing instrument?

12) Who ruled Jordan from 1960 until his death in 1999?

13) In the TV show and in real life, what does the acronym M.A.S.H.
stand for?

14) Who was the first European explorer to see the Mississippi River?

I can't remember the others right now - they must have been the ones I
really aced. :-)

Those are kind of tough. I didn't cheat though. Anyone know all the

Yes, but am I right about any? I'm too tired to go searching the
internet. The only one I'm sure of is Sarah Michelle Gellar playing
Buffy and the acronym MASH stands for.

2 other questions that the group before me had, but not on my test.

- Who was in love with Pandora?

- What word beginning with "M" describes the geological shifting of
glaciers and land masses?

Well, if I could tell you if you were right, would I be touting that I
was too stupid to answer most of those questions? lol

E-mail me. Those questions are tough. I don't think of people as
stupid if they don';t know the answers to hard questions, although you
are right that some others here might. They are tougher than the
questions they ask on TV, from what little I've seen of the show. Why
do you want to go on that show anyway if you are afraid people will
think of you as stupid? That seems to be the sole intent of the show,
for people to look stupid and be ridiculed as such. You should be
glad you weren't picked. Go on Millionaire instead.

Yes I definitely thought the questions aired on the show focused more
on "pop culture" than the actual questions presented in the quiz. But
when you've got 500-1000 people showing up to audition, it's a good
way to weed out the real dummies. One barely 18 year old chick showed
up next to me and asked "What's this all about? My *agent* sent me
down and told me to audition, that it would be helpful for my career."
Well......alllllrighty then.

>Why do you want to go on that show anyway if you are afraid people will
>think of you as stupid?

Oh hell I'm not afraid people will think I'm stupid. I just got the
wrong set of questions for my group. lol I would have done much
better with the other sets of questions. Right?

I could never go on Millionaire. Too much pressure. I'd rather have
other contestants surrounding me, so when I fuck up I can somehow
shift the blame onto someone else. :-)

Did she make it to the finals? :-) He just wants her to be seen on TV
so some producer or something will see her perhaps.

I believe you may have been referring to Tahitian women instead of Taiwanese,

My thought exactly. It couldn't be Taiwanese because Taiwan was Formosa
then. I liked Robinson Caruso, but I have no idea who wrote the book.
Robinson Crusoe, however, was written by Daniel De Foe.

Was this meant as an example of what was wrong with the show? That some
of the questions and supposed answers were wrong.

I was a Jeopardy finalist and I didn't get all those answers right.

You're probably right. I was nowhere near knowing the correct answer,
so Taiwanese, Tahitian, Turkish - any of those could have been
interchangeable in my mind. lol Plus the questions were brief and
asked fairly rapidly, and I was trying to remember the questions some
6 hours or so later to post them here.

I was always on "Quiz Bowl" teams - you know, the nerdy kids on TV
that compete against another team. But I wasn't nerdy. :-)

LOL - unfortunately, I think you're exactly right on my reference for
pronunciation, hence the spelling. Now if they would have asked a
Gilligan's Island question, I would have rocked!

I do not recall Monet painting any taiwanese women, in fact you would be
hard pressed to find any human figures by him.

I'm wondering if the original poster confused tahitian with tawainese,
she did say she was quoting from memory.

I saw some paintings of Japanese women by Monet. Maybe he meant
Japanese.

Yeah, that's the kind of twisted sentence I construct in the middle of
the night. Pregnancy related insomnia. Sleep deprivation is definitely
rotting my brain cells...

That's what our Hi-IQ team was. I was a cool cat masquerading as a nerd.
:) Now that the millenium is here, nerds rule, of course....

Anyway, the Hi-IQ team for my high school had a ten year winning streak.
The ONE year I played on it, we lost, badly. I, at least, answered some
of the questions. The rest of us choked...

I checked this one in the _World Almanac, which gives FOUR discoveries:

Mouth of the Mississippi -- 1519 -- Alfonso de Pineda (Spanish)

Mississippi R. nr Memphis -- 1539-41 -- Hernando de Soto (Spanish)

Mississippi R. S to Arkansas -- 1673 -- Marquette and Joliet (French)

Mississippi R. S to G of Mexico -- 1682 -- de La Salle (French)

No specific information from the stretch from Lake Itasca to Memphis.
