NY DAILY NEWS/LLOYD GROVE....
Fashion Week is all about appearances.

So it looked like Vogue doyenne Anna Wintour was playing hooky Sunday
night when, instead of showing up at the Byrant Park runways, she was
busted - on network television, no less - for sitting in the audience
of the Andre Agassi-Roger Federer final of the U.S. Open.

"Roger Federer is a friend of hers," Vogue spokesman Patrick O'Connell
said, explaining why Wintour skipped the show of her pal Diane von
Furstenberg (narrowly missing the lights that came crashing down on
denizens of the front row). "She did call Diane and said she wanted to
make arrangements to see the collection."

But appearances aside, the stylishly dressed famous and near-famous are
using Fashion Week to confess some inner thoughts.

At Sunday night's celebglutted, Bellini-drenched Luca Luca show in the
Bryant Park tents, hip-hopster Damon Dash lamented: "People are really
famous for being famous these days. A lot of people are not as famous
on the merits of real talent. So people are working more at being
famous. If you notice, I've been shying away a little, 'cause I don't
want to become that."

Didn't notice, actually. But it's nice to hear Damon Dash expressing
concerns about overexposure.

Rapper Cam'ron, wearing an all-white linen suit with diamond trim,
raved about his new 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo. "It's blue! It's
outside!" he crowed.

Anne Hathaway, with boyfriend Raffaello Follieri, took a moment to tell
about her much less sweet ride - a Madonna moment during the filming of
"Brokeback Mountain."

"My horse threw me in front of a crowd of 300 extras," she recalled. "I
really had been studying horseback riding, and I thought I had gotten
really good, and then on the day of filming, they switched horses on
me. And I didn't know it was a verbal-command horse instead of a
physical-command horse.

"And so I was yanking on the reins to get it to stop, and so it
thought, 'Oh my God, I have to stop right now,' so it stopped dead in
its tracks instead of slowing down, and I just kept going!' "

Meanwhile, back in the front row, Carmen Electra - having more fun as a
platinum blond - was discussing with Lowdown her latest obsession
(doing The National Enquirer's crossword puzzles) when Kelly Osbourne
suddenly appeared.

"I believe you're in my seat," she told Lowdown icily, taking her
rightful place in the celebrity food chain.

NY DAILY NEWS/RUSH AND MOLLOY....
Anna Wintour better beef up her security this Fashion Week. The People
for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are again on the march against the
fur-loving Vogue editrix - led by Heather Mills McCartney. "The woman
doesn't have a heart," Sir Paul's missus declared at Saturday's 25th
anniversary PETA gala in L.A. Branding her "Cruella Wintour" - after
the evil Dalmatian-slayer of cartoon fame - Heather told us that even
some "fake fur" is "made of dog and cats being skinned alive." Heather
said she also plans to lead a boycott here against other
fur-traffickers, including J. Crew, which she dubbed, "J. Cruel."
Fellow honorees Andy Dick and Pink urged the crowd to boycott anything
from furry Jennifer Lopez, whom they dubbed, "J. Bitch." Pink also
heaped contumely on Beyoncé, saying, "She's got a big button - let's
push hers!" Alec Baldwin thanked his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, for
"opening my eyes to animal rights. ... Look at the way [Hurricane]
Katrina was handled - the way the government treats people and their
animals is a tragedy." Meanwhile, Vogue contributing editor Andre Leon
Talley is also being targeted this week. Gadfly designer Mal Sirrah
wants people to boycott Talley. Sirrah (formerly known as Harris Lam)
claims the towering style arbiter told someone he wouldn't come to
Sirrah's Convent Ave. show because, "[I] wouldn't be caught dead going
to a fashion show in Harlem." Sirrah also claims Talley, who is black,
"has systematically ignored the contributions of African-Americans in
fashion." Talley says he never got an invitation to Sirrah's show, much
less made the crack about Harlem. "Andre has actively supported black
designers," says a Vogue rep, noting that the Rev. Calvin Butts
recognized his fund-raising for the Abyssinian Development Corp. Oh,
and how do we boycott Talley - by not laughing at his quips?

NY POST/FARRAH WEINSTEIN
AS Vogue editrix Anna Wintour sits front row during Fashion Week with
her slick straight bob and owl sunglasses, Hollywood is working hard to
bring the bete noire to the silver screen.

On Saturday, filming will begin in Manhattan on "The Devil Wears
Prada," an adaptation of the roman ... clef written by former Vogue
assistant Lauren Weisberger.

Meryl Streep will play bossy editor Miranda Priestly of Runway magazine
(based on Wintour), and Anne Hathaway will take on the role of Andrea
Sachs, the slave/assistant who fetches like a cowed puppy.

The book - which was on the New York Times best-seller list for six
months - caused a storm of whispers in the magazine community two years
ago, when it was first released.

But don't expect Streep to portray Wintour as Satan.

"The movie is slightly different from the book, and it makes the head
character more human and not so devilish," says stylist Tracy Cox, who
is working on the movie alongside fashion czar Patricia Field, the
former "Sex and the City" costume designer.

Streep will be spunkier and more charismatic in the editrix role, she
adds.

"We're painting the character from scratch," Cox says. "She'll wear
more color, be sexier and more provocative [than Wintour]. She's a
different character than what people are expecting. She won't have
black hair, and she won't wear dark sunglasses. She is a very fallible,
assertive editor."

So far, working with Streep is "amazing," the stylist says. "Just to
see her transform into the character as we've had fittings. Each time,
she comes in with a little more, trying to capture this character in a
different light, in a positive light."

Field and Cox will also be using a range of designers, from J. Crew to
Chanel.

"It's been a really political process because everyone is not willing
to participate," says Cox, who attended the Cynthia Steffe and Proenza
Schouler shows yesterday looking for inspiration.

"But I think it's a movie about fashion. And fashion movies don't come
along to often, and this is going to be one of the better ones."

Who doesn't want to help?

"Certain designers who have ties to ... um ..."

Anna?

He nods yes, as if she's Lord Voldemort.

"They don't want to put themselves in the wrong situation, which is
totally understandable," he says.

Still, Bill Blass, Donna Karan, Chanel and Fendi have stepped up to the
plate. And of course, they'll be using Prada.

"I want to dress everyone as beautiful as possible," Field tells The
Post at the Alexander Herchcovitch fashion show on Sunday.

"Working with Meryl Streep is fantastic. She is the payoff for this
project. She's funny, smart and she always puts a smile on my face."

As for Hathaway, "she has a really sexy body no one's ever seen before.
And she's going to show it," Field says.

At the Luca Luca fashion show, Hathaway (hot off the Venice Film
Festival red carpet where her latest movie, "Brokeback Mountain," won
top prize) was beaming with anticipation.

"I'm really excited," she says. "The script gets better and better and
better. And Meryl is already so sublime in the role. It's wonderful.
She's got the part nailed."

Hathaway - whose favorite designers are Chanel and Balenciaga - also
confirmed that she'll show a side of herself her fans have never seen
before.

"I'm not a little girl anymore," she says. "So my character has a
sexual side that I think people probably don't necessarily associate me
with. But now they'll hopefully get to see it.

"Pat Field has me dripping in glamour."

Once this movie hits theaters, probably sometime next year, Hathaway is
destined to be "the next new starlet," says Cox.

"We are preparing her," says Cox. "In the movie, she'll take on three
different stages - clueless, then informed and then obsessed with
fashion. She transforms into the swan.

"We challenged her [Hathaway] with stronger silhouettes and sexier,
more revealing clothes."

Fashion insiders are all stoked for what's to come.

"If the script is sharp and witty, the movie will offer an inside peek
into an industry that fascinates and antagonizes most people," says
InStyle fashion director Hal Rubenstein.

"People outside the industry are talking about it," says Elisa
Lipsky-Karasz, associate editor of WWD Eye.

"Everyone will be fascinated to see the fashion industry from the
inside."

Wintour is even looking forward to it.

"Anna Wintour is in full support of anything that supports the fashion
industry," says a spokesperson for Vogue.

Okay, I wanna know if the book "The Devil Wears Prada" was based on
her. I read the book a few years ago and loved it. What do you think?

Does she eat? She seems to suffer from those crackling nerves of
bitchiness that befall women who live on Diet Coke, Gummy Bears, and an
endless stream of balsamic radicchio salads - which have her down on the
floor doing crunches 3 minutes after she eats.

Thank you. Now you've put ME in the mood for Gummy Bears and I am going to
have to do 100 more crunches than usual.

Oh bullshit. She's been dressing like a whore for awhile now. A higher
class whore though, it should be noted. Not quite like the gutter
skanks Britney and tara reid, but still, she been thrusting her
cleavage for a few years at least.

I don't see Streep as Wintour.

In answer to the question, anyone at the top will be a devil in someone's
eyes, especially toes that have been stepped on or people who have been
fired.
