Linda Ronstadt leaves Tucson for San Francisco
Associated Press

TUCS0N - Singer Linda Ronstadt - after living in Tucson the past ten years -
has moved to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Ronstadt says she's not sure if the move is permanent.
She said she hasn't decided to sell her midtown Tucson home yet - that she
loves the house, the neighborhood, and her neighbors and friends.
But while she loves the home, she doesn't care for the noise from the
Davis-Monthan Air Force Base flight path that runs directly overhead.
Ronstadt, who grew up in Tucson, had moved back to her hometown from San
Francisco in 1995 in hopes of giving her two children a way of life she grew
up in.
But she discovered over her decade in Tucson that urban sprawl and
transportation issues had made Tucson a very different place from her
childhood memories.

Sheeet! She just doesn't want to come out and say the place sucks! I
am also a native of that snake pit and I hate it more than any other
city in the union!
Tucsonans don't support Linda Ronstadt and never have. I don't know
first hand, but the talk around town is they call her slut and whore.
Tucson has no art and she is the biggest named artist to come out of
Tucson...now Phoenix is a different story. Linda has never performed
an all out Linda Rondstadt concert in that city...to my knowledge. Add
to that, they threw a bottle at Geddy Lee(Singer for r&r group Rush)in
the 80's...the band never returned to date.
If you knew San Francisco you'd understand. It's a city of
self-contained, self-sufficient neighborhoods which, in a sense,
provide a "smalltown" feel. You have your local markets, schools,
churches, etc. Some people rarely even stray from their own
neighborhoods. Ronstadt lived in SF for several years before moving to
Tuscon, so obviously she knows what's she's doing.
I don't know first hand, but talk around agc is that they call you a
prick and an idiot.

Translation; "I think she's a slut and a whore. Only other drooling,
troglodytic cretins like me agree, and since I'm from Tucson, one can
assume it's a popular POV there."

She's performed at least twice in the last 10 years that I know of, if
you meant Phoenix. What you meant by "all out", I don't know.
1) September 14, 1999 - Phoenix, AZ (Celebrity Theater)
2)"Claiming he was desperately in love with Ronstadt, Ortiz, 55, showed
up at her concert in Phoenix Saturday, apparently planning to woo the
singer into marrying him. Police nabbed him on stalking charges three
hours before the concert began."

Uh -- I lived in Tucson for 7 years. Why do you hate it so much? I REALLY
want to know. Oh, I never heard LR called a slut or a whore EVER. I heard
her called rich and privileged and Tucson royalty, but not a slut or a
whore.

Troglodytic? I think I love you! ;-) As I said in another post, I lived
in Tucson for 7 years and the only thing I ever heard about LR was that she
was a privileged kid. Her family was very powerful in Tucson. That said, I
never heard anything bad about her at all.

She should have joined Neil Young and Joan Baez in the SF exburg
of Woodside, a quiet, gentle, horsey place near Stanford U.
She is a native Tucsonan. She purchased a home in Tucson in 1995, yet
her family name is known throughout the city, as they've been there for
decades. Her brother is former chief of police and the central
downtown bus terminal is named "Ronstadt Center". Why would the most
famous member of the family not reside in her hometown and then turn
around and leave again???
That's whay they say about the USA around the world too!

Whatever this trash means. I thought this was an english reading

No I didn't mean Phoenix.

Where she is the headliner, as she has done some shows as a member of a
chorus.

Phoenix.

Phoenix.
Linda's from Tucson.
Care to cite some Tucson shows where she's performed for her hometown.
Van Halen, Chaka Khan, Foriegner, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Rush,
Heart, Tina Turner, Lionel Ritchie, etc have all performed in Tucson.
Why not Linda?
Scheduling conflict???
If you enquire about the story w/her and The Stone Ponies you'll learn
the parting wasn't pleaseant. Enough said!

What a-list famous artists and or musicians are from Tucson, besides
the deceased painter Degrasia and singer Linda Rondstadt?
These people are either from Tucson or lived/still live there.
Barbara Kingsolver
N. Scott Momaday
Santana
Paul and Linda McCartney
Barbara Eden
Don Knotts
Greg Kinnear
Jerry Bruckheimer
John Denver
Lee Marvin
Stephen Baldwin
I can't believe you don't think Tucson is an artist-friendly town. What
about the DPC? Antigone? The Poetry Center? Where were YOU hanging out?

I recently read a mag that printed the celebs who live in tucson and
those who are natives...Diana Ross was amongst them, as many celebs
live in the hills of Tucson to relax and escae the papparazzi, but
that's not what I am asking here. I am asking about celebs who are
"FROM" tucson pre-fame. There are none, save Linda Ronstadt and maybe
a football star who attended college at the U of A before going pro.
Uh...what part of "FROM" Tucson do you not understand? Aren't we
speaking of Linda Ronstadt...a native? Wouldn't that qualify the term
"From" in this instance???
Linda McCartney is a native, yes but what art does she do besides marry
Paul and take pics of all the people he connected her to? Until she
scored w/Paul she was nothing...unlike Linda Ronstadt!
The remaining people on your list are not natives and resided in
Tucson, if at all, after they became famous.
Sorry! You lose, but we have some nice consolation prizes for you
backstage!
Little one, I have lived in Tucson for some 30+ years. Believe me I
know the ins and outs of that city like the palm of my hand...so PLEASE
don't play kiddy games.

Where do musical artist go for lessons besides U of A, Beavers Band
Box, Guitar Center(both primarily musical instrument retailers) or City
Parks and Recreation(lol)??? Are there any art institutes that are
nationally reputable and dedicated to producing quality musicians,
actors or artists??? NO! Please don't try to paint a pretty of
Tucsons art scene here on the net simply because subscribers reading
this topic aren't able to witness the artistic slump of that city
firsthand. Like I said, no successful artist has come from there...and
I'm not talking about people who have achieved fame...like Paul
McCartney and have moved into the surrounding mountains to enjoy
Tucsons nature scene! If you have no money to begin with you can't get
rich on a cactus!!!
THAT is true. Some of those places are very, very dangerous. Very
dangerous.

Celebs are easy to spot in Tucson. Whenever a movie is filming in Tucson
(and people always film in Tucson), the celebs all wind up, in my
experience, at Congress and the Cup Cafe. However, I would rather see the
Mollys than, say, Britney Spears. If celebrity is all that excites you,
that's pretty sad.

Uh, after many nights spent at the Temple of Music and Art, Club Congress,
MudBuggs, the U of A Poetry Center, etc., I would hardly call Tucson a dead
city. There was always something to do. I think you have created your own
limits.

Hmm, you never had much of an education, did you? You certainly didn't have
a Tucson education if you don't know Momaday.

I never said he was from there. Did you read this? <<These people are

What part of <<These people are either from Tucson or lived/still live
there>> was too challenging for you? As I said, my husband was born in
Connecticut. However, he spent most of his life in Tucson before coming to
NYC. His years in Tucson shaped him as he, in his small way, shaped Tucson.
My years in Tucson shaped me just as I, in my tiny way, shaped it.
I lived in Tucson for 7 years and I left in '96. I am from NYC and I
returned to NYC. That said, in many ways, I think Tucson is MORE
artist-friendly than NYC. It's possible to live there, for one. NYC rents
are out of control. It's possible to get shown at galleries, etc. -- you
wouldn't believe the political nonsense in the NYC art world. A place like
the late, lamented DPC is possible in Tucson -- try doing that in NY! Hey,
if you have no money, Tucson is a whole lot better than NYC -- why do you
think I went to school there? Heck, I could live on next-to-nothing and
tuition was nothing. It was beautiful. Now, I can tell you are not
educated, but the University of Arizona's Photography Center is highly
respected and the place is swarming with artists, musicians, and
philosophers. You want music lessons, look no further than the U of A. As
for music, what about Sam Taylor? Greyhound Soul? The Mollys? There are
great musicians. Fame is not my arbiter for excellence, you know. One last
question -- why don't you leave if you hate it so much?
You choke to death on your own spittle or something here?

Club Congress? The only happining club in town, which pales severely
to clubs of other cities. Might I add, that's just a bar/nightclub.
Big deal! What does that h ave to do with recruiting talent or the
type celebs we gossip about here in AGC sitting in unexpectedly w/the
house band at those places??? Haven't you heard Tucson is a retirement
community and that's the way they keep it! The celebs want it that way
as well so as to ensure what they love most about Tucson...quiet time
and boredom.

This is the lamest retort I've seen on the net, to date.
Uh...ding dong recall when I asked: "What a-list famous artists and or

LOL! Not an English/literature major.
I just googled this "A-List" star under news and got 4 hits! WOW!
I got 2490 hits on Britney Spears, 178 on Linda Ronstadt
and 988 on Diana Ross.
Gee! I stand corrected!

Recall when I asked???
"What a-list famous artists and or musicians are from Tucson, besides

Why did you have to go and convolute matters like a snake, in attempt
to purport Tucson to be what it isn't?

Lol! Yes, they transport in and out of the hills of Tucson in
helicopters and limousines...they just don't have anything much else to
do with the little ol retirement town besides pay thier property taxes
and remain in obscurity.
Certainly you didn't learn what you learned on Tucsons Channel 4
Eyewitness News at 10:00p! You had to dig or get the gossip around
town for this celeb info. They do nothing there but sleep! NOTHING!

So! Lots of athletes who go pro get scholarships to the U of A.
Can Tucson claim them as thier own? NO! Many of them don't even come
back to say hi! You miss the point again.
Linda is undeniably Tucsons!!!! There is no celebrity of her caliber
or even an A-list star that has come out of that town!!!! Don't you
get it???

I live in NYC. I lived there before I went to Tucson and I live in NYC now.
Yes, NYC has more clubs, etc. It has a greater variety of things to choose
from. Still, I found Tucson very satisfying when I was there. I am saying
this AS A NEW YORKER. You are a Tucsonan who cannot appreciate his own
city! Doesn't the fact that a New Yorker (who went to and worked in the

Hmmmm, maybe. I think so. When I moved to Tucson, I remember thinking it
was very dark at night, much darker than NYC. That didn't bother me.
Sorry. I just don't get excited at the thought of Britney Spears. I do not
consider her much of an artist. I have a much higher opinion of Momaday's
art than I do Britney Spears. I guess you equate art with fame. I don't.
That is why you don't like Tucson. You can't see the wonderful art around
you because it hasn't been packaged by a corporation.

Oh, geez. Tell us where your ancestors came from. I doubt you're Native
American.
So is Linda Ronstadt.

Impolite and vulgar??? Hmmm...kettle, pot, black?
Earlier you upset me, now you simply amuse me.

Of course! Everythings art these days!
Now I see where you're coming from. The birds are art, the clouds are
art, the moon is art, the water flowing through the valley is art. I
want to go where the air is clean, the water is pure, the skies are

And you are correct that Tucson is much more "arty" than Phoenix.
All of this said, I can understand why LR would prefer San Francisco. While
both cities have changed in the past 30 - 40 years, the changes have been much
more substantial in Tucson than in SF.

What I spoke of was old small town gossip...uh...this is a gossip
group. Now don't get me wrong...I admire Linda for having struggled
hard enough to get out of Tucson and become an international renown
singer. Tucson today is not the Tucson of yesterday, however, like all
cities it has a past. So please don't be foolish enough to believe
your beloved new home has always been bright and shining with a white
picket fence. It took the efforts and lives of many to make Tucson the
little bit of nothing, comparatively, that it still is today.

Cousins? Of course you'd expect to hear bad things about one of the
Queens of the Ronstadt family from her cousin. Duh! As I said, I have
no knowledge first hand about the rumors and Linda seems to be a cool
chick too me, however, there is local town gossip for "the gossip
group" and there you have it...Good or bad, like it or not!

Now that's a laugh and that's not gossip! Artsy in what way?
Ok, I'll bite! Hey everybody! Go to Tucson to develop your musical or
acting talent and become a famous actor or musician!!!
LOL!

Of course! People leave thier hometown for many reasons. Keep in
mind, Linda is a STAR! Certainly you don't expect her to bad mouth
the city her family has resided in and achieved major success in for
decades do you?
Again, I ask why hasn't she done a headlining "LINDA RONSTADT IN
CONCERT"
concert for her home town and showed the folks back home how much she
loves and appreciates them for all they've done for her and thier
support throughout the years. I mean, they do admire and speak highly
of her as has been your experience.
