Before John F. Kennedy Jr. was touted as a possible heir to Camelot, he was a
daredevil party animal who liked pot, porn and parading around naked, according
to a controversial new biography.

Although JFK Jr's. yen for actress Daryl Hannah is well documented, author
Christopher Andersen adds in "The Day John Died" that the couple took out a
California marriage license in July 1993 and planned to wed in Santa Monica.

"Daryl really liked him," the actress' friend Sugar Rautbord told Andersen.
"She was desperate to marry him."

So desperate that Hannah twice asked Kennedy to marry her — on bended knee,
friends told Andersen.

"Don't push me," an angry JFK Jr. reportedly told Hannah when she began
demanding marriage. "I don't respond to ultimatums."

JFK Jr., whom People magazine dubbed "Sexiest Man Alive," wed Carolyn Bessette
instead. But theirs was a stormy marriage almost from the start.

Stressed out by round-the-clock media coverage of their every move and by JFK
Jr.'s demands for a son he could call Flynn, Bessette began popping
anti-depressants, the book says. Meanwhile, Kennedy reportedly complained he
had been banished from the marital bed and began pouring out his troubles to an
old flame, leggy lingerie model Julie (Jules) Baker.

The brief marriage ended tragically a year ago Sunday, when the plane Kennedy
was piloting crashed off Martha's Vineyard, Mass., killing him, his wife and
his sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette.

With the sad anniversary approaching, the Kennedy family was mum yesterday
about Andersen's biography, which publisher William Morrow said would provide
"closure to the tragedy and to the ultimately inspiring story."

But the 303-page tome has drawn fire from Kennedy friends who complained that
Andersen was tarring an American icon.

Also troubling are dramatic passages recounting JFK's last moments, when his
plane was falling out of the sky.

"John's head was swimming," Andersen wrote. And at one point, one of the
terrified passengers cried out, "John, John, what's going on?"

Andersen, a former Time magazine scribe who has penned popular bios of Madonna
and Michael Jackson, told the Daily News that the quotes from the final moments
were based on interviews with aviation experts and federal sleuths who
investigated the crash.

The picture that captured the nation's heart: John John salutes his father's
coffin.
As for the quote, Andersen said: "That is not something that was recorded.
That's just a re-creation."

As a little boy, the son of President John F. Kennedy captured the nation's
heart by bravely saluting his father's coffin. But he grew into a rebellious
brat who got high with his prep school pals and haunted Times Square strip
joints at night.

He apparently was fascinated by pornography, and a video store owner accused
him of running up more than $1,000 in fines on dozens of X-rated videos he
failed to return, Andersen writes.

But JFK Jr. soon became an object of desire and wasn't shy about flaunting his
chiseled physique.

"He loves to walk around in the nude," said Couri Hay, a former workout partner
who once saw The Hunk skinny-dipping at a Hyannis Port, Mass., pool party.

He "could have been a porn star," Hay added.

JFK Jr. clashed with his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, over careers (he
wanted to be an actor, she wanted him to be a lawyer), over flying (she had a
premonition he would die in a crash while piloting a plane) and over women (she
hated Hannah and was aghast at his affair with Madonna). But in the end,
Andersen writes, he paid his mother the ultimate compliment by taking up with
Bessette.

"I think," said Jamie Auchincloss, one of JFK Jr.'s uncles, "she may have
reminded him more of his mother."

The Day John Died, a book about John F. Kennedy Jr. by Christopher Andersen,
hits stores today, refuting many of the rumors that have swirled around his
fatal plane crash nearly one year ago.

Andersen says he wrote the book to counter the glut of unsavory tabloid stories
about Kennedy and the crash off the coast of Martha's Vineyard that also
claimed the life of his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, 33, and her sister,
Lauren Bessette, 34. Andersen's book follows a National Transportation Safety
Board report last week that said Kennedy, 38, lost control of his single-engine
Piper Saratoga on July 16, 1999, becoming disoriented during a hazy night
descent over water.

Andersen, the author of other Kennedy books as well as The Day Diana Died,
refutes reports of discord between Kennedy and his wife. "All this talk about
them headed for a divorce was baloney," he says. "John was an astoundingly
moral and ethical person and he wanted this marriage to work."

Found no evidence to support rumors that Bessette used cocaine. "I've talked to
people who knew that Carolyn was taking antidepressants, but there was no
indication of drug use. It's awful that she continues to be trashed."

Says the biggest misconception about Kennedy, founding editor of George
magazine, was that he was an intellectual lightweight. "John was so much more
substantial than people had thought about him. He had a tremendous wit and
native intelligence, and above all, was a really nice guy."

"I'm a warts-and-all writer," he says, "and I couldn't really find any warts in
John. He was loved by everybody."

Andersen believes the Federal Aviation Administration bears much of the
responsibility for the crash because of weather reports that forecast clear
conditions.

"Even though John was a daredevil, he didn't take chances when it came to
aviation," he says. "He certainly made mistakes. He flew with a broken foot,
but you can't discount that he would not have taken off that night if he knew
what was happening at the other end."

Andersen says visibility data was based on an automated device installed by the
FAA.

"But rather than scanning the sky, the device is pointed straight up,
permitting it to report only on the air directly above it."

If a small portion of sky is clear, he says, then the machine will report that
the whole area is clear. Andersen says Kennedy will be remembered "not so much
for what he did as for what he was — America's son. Had he run for office, I
think he would have brought a lot to this country."

In other Kennedy book news: Laurence Leamer's The Kennedy Men, a sequel to The
Kennedy Women, will be published by Morrow in the fall. It's a
multigenerational look at the men in the Kennedy dynasty. Two other JFK Jr.
projects have been jettisoned. Edward Klein, former New York Times Magazine
editor and longtime friend of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, dropped plans for a
biography. Why?

"There is a whole variety of reasons that I don't really want to get into," he
recently told New York magazine.

And ex-George editor Richard Blow's tell-all tome was scrapped by publisher
Little, Brown, because of a confidentiality agreement he allegedly signed with
the magazine.

That "poor" woman was a miserable excuse for a human being and a rotten and
neglectful mother who cared more about clothes and shopping trips to Paris then
she did about her children.

Sounds like you are trying to divert attention away from the fact that
JFK Jr. was a very cautious and deliberate pilot.
