TV's Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Andy Whitfield will not be
returning to the Starz series for a second season, due to a recurrence
of cancer that will require aggressive treatment, the network has
announced.
"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from
such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people
involved," Whitfield, 36, said in a statement. "It seems that it is
time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary
journey."

This sucks.
It's unfortunate, but I'd do second season with a replacement, then
invite him back in season 3.
Dr. Who changes doctors often enough.
Yeah, but never back again.

Rich was probably thinking about the oldest daughter on Roseanne.

I know what you mean. I can suspend disbelief to allow for another
actor to fill the role, although a soap opera would had been a better
analogy since Dr. Who is an alien so we can expect him to change. Hey
an even better analogy would be James Bond! :-)

I'd be fine with waiting for Andy to get better and then continue filming
with him. But if that wouldn't be practical due to how long his treatment
and recovery will take then I'll accept a replacement. Generally, when
actors are replaced on shows I like, it usually doesn't bug me all that
much. I think it actually bothers me more when they write in a new
character. As far as possible replacements go, I wonder if Sam Worthington
is available and willing to do TV.
Aren't we the optimist?
Recurred cancer is generally a death sentence, unfortunately ...

I just thought of the classic actor replacement Dick York for Dick
Sargent in "Bewitched". They looked a lot alike and even had the same
first name. If the same thing can be done for Spartacus...
I just looked up this Sam Worthington fellow :

And I would think he would be a perfect replacement, more than enough
for me to suspend disbelief if I watch any season one episodes while I
was watching season two. The question is is his physice good enough?
Whitfield was not really the bodybuilder type but he was well put
together so he may have to workout for a few months before they start
filming.
I hope Whitfield will get better wheter he comes back or not. :-(
