NY DAIY NEWS/LLOYD GROVE...
It looks like the defense lawyer for online gambling heir Luke Weil -
son of Scientific Games mogul Lorne Weil - hasn't saved his rich young
client from the grinding wheels of justice.

The 25-year-old Weil is set to appear Oct. 11 in New York Supreme Court
in the runup to a felony assault trial arising from a nasty incident
involving record producer Tarka Cordell at hipster-socialite Hope
Atherton's birthday party last November.

Weil, who's free on his own recognizance, must answer a just-revealed
grand jury indictment accusing him of attempted first-degree assault
and second-degree assault. The charges carry possible penalties of 15
and seven years, respectively, plus a $5,000 fine - for allegedly
smashing Cordell's head with "a dangerous instrument, to wit, a
bottle."

Yesterday, Cordell's attorney, Alan Schnurman, told me he'll delay
depositions in his client's multimillion-dollar civil suit against Weil
until the trial runs its course.

"We had a deposition of Weil scheduled for [today], but on Friday they
asked for an adjournment pending the criminal charges," Schnurman said.
"He would not have testified anyway - he'd just have taken the Fifth."

Weil attorney Charles Clayman - who has previously expressed his
distaste for "trying this case in the press" - had no comment
yesterday.

NY POST/PAGE SIX...
Rich kid Luke Weil might soon be spending time with the common folk -
in jail. The obnoxious Autotote gaming heir has been indicted on
assault charges in Manhattan Supreme Court stemming from a vicious 2004
attack on Brit rocker Tarka Cordell, in which Weil allegedly broke a
champagne bottle on Cordell's head at a party. Weil, 25, made an
infamous appearance in Johnson & Johnson heir Jamie Johnson's
documentary "Born Rich," in which he boasts about four-figure bar tabs
and gloats that "if someone from some . . . little town in Connecticut
is pissing you off [you can say] f- - - you, I'm from New York and my
family can buy your family." Cordell's lawyer, Alan Schnurman, tells
PAGE SIX that he'll wait for the resolution of the criminal trial
before proceeding with the multimillion-dollar civil suit against Weil.
"My client still suffers from blurred vision, hearing problems and
depression as a result of the attack. Plus he has a huge scar on his
scalp. The bottle didn't break the first time [Weil] hit him, so he hit
him again until it shattered." Weil's attorney Charles Clayman could
not be reached for comment.
