Artist Gets Sticky with Celebrities
Thu Mar 11, 2004 08:16 AM ET

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian artist Jason Kronewald gets friends chewing
bubble gum and spits out life-like portraits of celebrity blondes.

The 29-year-old from Toronto collects hundreds of pieces of chewed gum to
create his works of art, called Gum Blondes.

"I'm always looking for chewed gum," Kronenwald said on Wednesday. "Anyone
who comes to my place is welcome to chew, as long as they leave it with me."

Kronenwald has made 15 life-like portraits of celebrities, including singer
Britney Spears and actresses Pamela Anderson and Jennifer Lopez. Each
portrait is made up of around 200 pieces of gum.

"Celebrities fascinate me. It just seems like a fitting way to pay tribute
to these modern icons," he says. "I couldn't think of a better way to
represent somebody like Britney Spears than with chewed bubble gum."

He began using gum as an arts student because it was a cheap alternative to
regular art material. The idea stuck. But he doesn't like to chew the gum
himself, and never uses any that he hasn't asked someone to chew for him.

"I'm not into picking it off seats in the theater," he says. "I look at it
in awe and wish I could take it, but I never have. I like the gum to be
mine."
