--THE late Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell's mother has no love for his
former Run DMC rap-mate, Darryl "DMC" McDaniels. When McDaniels showed
up Friday night at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston to give a
posthumous "Milestones" award to Jason, he was slammed by Connie
Mizell, who accepted the award on her son's behalf. According to our
spy, Mizell said, "Since Jason's death four years ago, this is the
first time I've seen D." She then insinuated McDaniels used Jason's
death for profit and sarcastically added, "Oh, but Jason and D were
best friends!"
--JESSICA Simpson's new movie could have a bad ending. The beleaguered
singer was psyched to start work on "Blonde Ambition," produced by
"Malcolm in the Middle" star Justin Berfield. But Berfield was heard
over the weekend complaining about the excessive demands her father,
Joe, is making - and that they might endanger Simpson's role in the
flick. A rep for Simpson said, "Well, Joe is a producer in the movie,
too, so that would be weird." A rep for Berfield said, "Yes, his
company is producing the movie."
--FASHION house Ralph Lauren is giving its designers the creepy
crawlies - literally. Staffers say they've had to put up with an
outbreak of bedbugs at the label's graphic design studio and shirt
design offices at 650 Madison Ave. One affected employee told us, "I
have bites all over me. This has gone on for over a month now." Ralph
Lauren executives at first refused to exterminate "on grounds of bites
alone," the insider says. "They wanted to see the bugs first. But
bedbugs are notoriously invisible. So we have been here suffering
forever. It is scandalous." A company rep said, "The exterminators were
called and came in three weeks ago when the problem was first brought
to our attention, and again last weekend. The employees in that office
were offered a chance to relocate to a different floor." Let's hope the
little critters don't pop up in any of the clothier's posh stores.

--MEL Gibson is doing his best to stay sober - but he's playing with
fire by hanging out in bars. The star who last month was caught driving
drunk in Malibu and making anti-Semitic slurs to the arresting officer
was at an Austin, Texas, watering hole called the Side Bar Friday
night. Gibson played pool until 2:30 a.m., but, our spy says, "was only
drinking water" and not hitting on the local women as he did before his
Malibu bust. Gibson's rep said, "Sounds like Mel."

--TWO-year-old Bob, son of Steve "Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, doesn't know
his father is gone. He asks, "When is daddy coming home?" The other day
when the family was packing Steve's camping gear Bob smiled, "Mmmm,
smells like daddy." Speaking to Star magazine this week, widow Terri's
parents, Julie and Clarence Raines of Eugene, Ore., say Terri will
"absolutely" now be more cautious with her children around animals.
"Things have changed . . . We were all shocked." About the little Irwin
family: "Kids need play time, but Terri is so distraught - she's
overcome with sadness. They were madly in love. Their connection was
beyond this Earth!"

--OK, so want to know how Angelina Jolie stays in shape? By Doing It!
Or so says part-time model-actress Kerry McCloskey who, for Valentine's
Day, will be out with "The Ultimate Sex Diet: The Super Sex Diet That
Works." Although nobody ever heard of any fitness coach saying, "Go
back to bed," she says "Life's greatest pleasure can help readers slim
down, shape up," . . . whatever. This Berkley paperback guarantees to
"ignite passion with the 29 sexiest exercises," which also help lose
weight. Whether this grabs your abs or just hits the G spot, who knows.
I only know she claims that Angelina claims that sex helps keep her in
shape. This is good news for Brad Pitt. If his career falters, he can
always be a personal trainer.

--PRINCESS GRACE of Monaco is dead. But don't tell that to p.r. flack
Stephen Huvane, who handles and protects his lady clients as carefully
as if they were about to slip on a crown. At last week's Premiere
magazine Women in Hollywood dinner, hosted by Chanel, Huvane's golden
girl Gwyneth Paltrow appeared to present an award. She was charming,
gracious, but no-nonsense. On and off in a flash, no eating or
schmoozing with her fellow actors. (Well, the entree was mostly meat,
so vegetarian Paltrow wouldn't have had much appetite anyway.) But
reporters were amused by Huvane's fabled hovering. "What does he think
anybody is going to do to her?" When a writer approached Huvane saying,
"You know, about that thing I wrote concerning Demi . . ." Huvane
snapped, "What - did you tell a lie?" "No, Stephen, as a matter of fact
. . ." "Because everybody writes lies, lies!" Oh, well, Huvane's
clients must appreciate his vigilance to their reputations. Others
attending were less skittish - Anjelica Huston, Cate Blanchett, Leelee
Sobieski, Christina Applegate, Dame Judi Dench (now, if she wanted to
get on a high horse!) Warren Beatty and Annette Bening were also on
hand, and hand-in-hand, both dripping old-style glamour. When Warren
slipped up behind Selma Archerd, wife of legendary columnist Army, she
cooed, "I'd know those arms anywhere!"

in past Lowdown to join Yago around midnight Saturday in a blue T-shirt

were putting flour up their nose." Talk about flour power!

--Simon Cowell seems pretty happy lobbing caustic comments on "American
Idol," but, it turns out, he's more comfortable off stage. "I probably
enjoy behind the scenes [more] than being on it," Cowell told reporters
yesterday. "I never went into this business to be on TV." Cowell is
doing both these days. He's preparing for the new season of "American
Idol" on Fox and "America's Got Talent" for NBC. The new season of
"America's Got Talent" will include a few twists, he said, including
adding a "boot camp" to help boost the images of nonsingers during the
final rounds of the show. "I think you're going to see quite a
different structure to the show," he said, adding that Regis Philbin
will be back as host. "We're working around Regis' schedule now," he
said. "I think we can make it work."

--If you plan to watch Tuesday night's episode of Smith be sure to
check out Ray Liotta's face. We were told that Ray showed up for the
first day of shooting with an alarmingly red, swollen, and peeling
face! His looks horrifed coworkers - especially the makeup department
we're sure, and he explained that he had recently gotten some sort of
face peel. He didn't realize it would take SO long to heal. Producers
were NOT happy - behind Ray's back they were overheard snarking "We
should just kill him off!" Lighting, closeups, wardrobe etc were
adjusted to disguise Ray's raw mug. Tune in to see if it all worked.
--We had a conversation with an actor who played a young inmate in the
surprise hit Gridiron Gang and we asked how it was to work with The

during the movie shoot. In the film, the rapper turned actor plays the
Rock's assistant coach to a team in a juvenile detention facility.

--CRAZY in love Beyonce stole the show in an emerald mini-skirt at her
fella Jay-Z's storming sell-out gig. The sexy 25-year-old joined the
king of rap for his first London date at Wembley Arena on Sunday and
certainly didn't disappoint with a steamy performance. After their
duets Crazy In Love and Deja Vu, 37-year-old Jay-Z teased his fiancee:
"Are you finished yet?" She giggled and replied "No" as he stormed into
his smash hits Hard Knock Life, Girls, Girls, Girls and Excuse Me Miss.
He also made a point of insisting the pair hadn't snubbed last week's
Mobos, saying: "You know we wouldn't do ya'll like that. We were always
going to Athens - check our schedules." In a show packed with
surprises, the strangest twist came when former enemy Nas walked on.
The greats swapped rhymes before Nas did his anthem, If I Ruled The
World. Still, it's no wonder Jay-Z was so at ease. His backstage rider
included a "£1-aminute" massage and comfort food such as custard cream
biscuits and tinned rice pudding. In all, the star's blazing set lasted
two hours and concluded with Encore... he certainly left us gasping for
more.
--KATE Moss must think junkie Pete Doherty's a sight for sore eyes as
she gazes lovingly at him yesterday - despite his ugly shiner. The
rocker, 27 - dubbed Potty Pete for his drug addiction - sported the
black eye as they headed to Ireland for a tour by his band. He threw an
arm around his famous girlfriend, 32, as she beamed at him. Bet Pete's
not used to people looking up to him though, especially as he's just
come out of rehab while he tries to ditch his crack and heroin habit.
The couple shared a passionate embrace, right, before boarding their
jet at Heathrow. His group Babyshambles play the first of their gigs
tonight in Carlow. Let's hope the singer's not going to Ireland just
because he's heard it's a great place for the craic. Otherwise he'll be
very disappointed.
--GEORGE Michael doesn't fancy an energetic stage show on his sellout
25 Live tour. The singer - whose duet with Mutya Buena, This Is Not
Real Love, is out on November 6, with a Greatest Hits out the following
week - reveals: "If I'm going to do this on a regular basis I have to
enjoy it. I'm not going to be running around on stage like a lunatic,
wondering whether people are excited or not. "That way, it will be less
stressful for me, my voice will stand up better. As a 43-year-old, it's
not natural for me to be a showman."
--BLACK Eyed Peas' Fergie has come clean about using the drug crystal
meth. The singer, whose solo album The Dutchess is out now, admits:
"You lose weight and look great for a while but it will creep up on
you." Fergie kicked the habit in 2001, before becoming famous with the
Peas, and, although she has been known to sport serious bling, she
claims: "I was collecting unemployment when I joined the band, so I
really appreciate the worth of things."
--ELLE Macpherson set tongues wagging at her son's christening when she
was "all over" ex partner Arpad Bus son. A guest reveals: "They were
holding hands and skipping about. Elle had to explain that they still

busy fighting off a frisky Italian at the do in Rome. "He was drooling
over her boobs and telling her how great they were."

--Kelsey Grammer doubts he'll ever return to series stardom. Though the
former "Frasier" is currently executive-producing three TV shows. "I
don't think I'm going to be on television again. You never know.
Someone might surprise me and deliver a great script where I think,
I've got to play this character.' But I don't want to repeat myself or
play Frasier in a movie. I want to try something else." Right now he's
focused on being behind the camera. "I'm going to direct an episode of
Everybody Hates Chris' in the near future, and there will possibly be a
couple of other new sitcoms. I'm busy, but I'm not busy every moment of
the day like I used to be. After 20 years, I think I should slow down a
little." Luckily for Grammer, his slower pace has allowed more time to
be with his wife Camille and their two young children. "I've got a new
family that I started, so I'm actually spending a lot of my time
nurturing my children. The thing about my life now and the difference
in having the kids I had when I was younger is I actually spend more
time with them and devote myself to them in a more active way." Kelsey
will be heard on TV beginning tonight (9/26), narrating TV Land's
four-episode "Generation Boom." The show, which features celebrities
like Susan Sarandon, Rob Reiner and Christie Brinkley, examines the
impact baby boomers have had through the years. "We were a big deal,"
he declares. "The post-World War II generation and what became of us is
kind of fascinating and fun."
--Wow, if Harry Hamlin looks sexy dancing the tango on tonight's (9/26)
"Dancing With the Stars," it could be because of the advice his wife,
Season 2 "Dancing" celebrity, Lisa Rinna, gave him. That is, to dance
with his professional dance partner, Ashly DelGrosso, the way he makes
love with Rinna. "I'm not sure exactly what she meant by that. We
didn't go into it. It's something I think about every day," admits
Harry. The actor, who confesses he had no interest in dance prior to
Rinna's involvement with the ABC hit, tells us, "I'm probably doing
this for different reasons than everyone else on the show. Having seen
what Lisa went through and following her journey - seeing the effect
that learning these dances had on her mentally and spiritually, not
just physically - I wanted to take that journey myself. I saw that
she had some of the same needs before doing the show that I also have;
it's a way for me to face fears I have." Such as? "Getting up in front
of 20 million people and doing something I don't know how to do. I've
pretty much overcome that hurdle," he says. "And then there's the fact
I want to learn to dance." Speaking of Rinna's on-air partner, he adds,
"I don't want to spend the rest of my life watching Lisa dance with
Louis van Amstel."
--What new album features the legendary Brian Wilson, Elvis Presley
guitarist James Burton, punk rock icon Tommy Ramone and Flaco Jimenez,
the six-time Grammy-award-winning TexMex music virtuoso? Would you
believe it's SpongeBob SquarePants' "The Best Day Ever"? As the sponge
would say, hiyiyiyii!!! "A lot of the guest musicians kind of happened
in a magical harmonic convergence," recounts Tom Kenny, aka the voice
of SpongeBob. "We had pie-in-the-sky ideas, but didn't have the budget
to do them. You know, like, Wouldn't it be great to have a Brian
Wilson-type harmony here?' " Each artist comes with a story, of course.
In the case of Wilson, it has to do with his two young daughters being
SpongeBob fans. "They actually did some yelling on the album," Kenny
points out. His and partner Andy Paley's vision for the album was along
the lines of TV faux bands of the past, ala The Partridge Family or The
Archies. SpongeBob's cartoon buddies are prominently spotlighted on the
album.
--Veteran Emmy-winning talk show host Dick Cavett recalls the first
time America set eyes on pop idol Barry Manilow back in the early 70s.
"Bette Davis sang They're Either Too Young or Too Old' on the second
show she did with me," recalls Cavett. "And we had to get a piano
player. The director said I know a guy who'd be just right for this.'
So this guy came in and was so excited because he was a great Bette
Davis fan. He had on a silver metallic shirt and accompanied her
perfectly. As the applause was dying down I slipped her his name and
she said Thank you, Barry Manilow.' It was probably the first time his
name had been uttered on TV. He was still an unknown tickler of the
ivories ... that's not a sex term, you understand." Cavett's one-on-one
conversations on "The Dick Cavett Show" with Bette Davis and other such
Hollywood greats as Orson Welles, Katharine Hepburn, Alfred Hitchcock
and Robert Mitchum are airing Thursday nights on Turner Classic Movies
followed by classic films of the interviewed stars.
