LONDON (Reuters) - Here are some notable events from this date in history:

1766 - London auctioneers Christie's held their first sale.

1776 - The first Greek letter scholastic fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, was
founded at the William and Mary College at Williamsburg, Virginia.

1782 - Martin van Buren, statesman and eighth president of the United States,
(1837-41), born. He was the first president born a U.S. citizen rather than a
subject of Britain.

1791 - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Austrian composer and performer, died. One of
the greatest classical composers, his immense output included 41 symphonies.

1839 - George Armstrong Custer, U.S. cavalry commander, born. His fame rests on
his ``last stand'' against a Sioux Indian force led by Chief Sitting Bull at
Little Bighorn, Montana, in which he and his entire company died.

1870 - Alexandre Dumas, French author whose works include ``The Count of Monte
Cristo'' and ``The Three Musketeers,'' died.

1872 - The American brig Mary Celeste was found abandoned and intact with her
cargo in the Atlantic en route to Genoa.

1890 - Fritz Lang, Austrian film director, born; his German films included
``Metropolis'' and ``M'' but he fled Nazi Germany for Hollywood where his works
included ``You Only Live Once.''

1899 - Sir Henry Tate, English sugar magnate and founder of the Tate Gallery in
London, died.

1901 - Walter Elias (Walt) Disney, U.S. artist and film producer who created
Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck, born.

1906 - Otto Preminger, American film director notably of ``Carmen Jones'' and
``Anatomy of a Murder,'' born in Austria.

1926 - Claude-Oscar Monet, French painter and one of the founders of the
Impressionist movement, died.

1933 - The 21st amendment of the U.S. constitution was ratified, ending the
``noble experiment'' of prohibition.

1935 - Little Richard, U.S. rock star who had major hits with ``Tutti Frutti,''
``Long Tall Sally'' and ``Good Golly Miss Molly,'' born as Richard Penniman.

1946 - Jose Carreras, Spanish operatic tenor, born. He has joined Placido
Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti for the ``Three Tenors'' concerts.

1990 - British author Salman Rushdie, who had been in hiding since Iran ordered
his death for blasphemy, appeared in public for the first time for nearly two
years
