JURASSIC PARK III star Laura Dern – pregnant with her first child – has
been accused of breaking up her lover's marriage!
The actress fell head over heels for musician Ben Harper, 31, last fall, but he
was still living with his wife Joanna until late last year.
"Laura is a homewrecker and she's the reason Joanna and Ben split up," reveals
a source. "She may have been pregnant when Ben was filing the divorce papers!"
Dern, 34, who reprises her character, Dr. Ellie Sattler, in the new summer
smash Jurassic Park III, met Harper through close friend Meg Ryan.
"Laura and Ben hit it off immediately, but Ben was still married, so they tried
to conceal their feelings for each other," sources say.
Unable to hide his love for Dern any longer, Harper walked out on his wife of
four years in December, and filed for divorce Jan. 3.
"Joanna was devastated when he dumped her," says a family friend.
"They have two adorable kids – son Charles, 4, and daughter Harris, who'll be
2 this month."
Friends say Harper's wife suspected he was cheating on her all along, but she
didn't know with whom. When Harper and Dern announced they're expecting a baby
in October, it only confirmed her worst fears.
Now, pals are buzzing that the couple are talking about a September wedding so
they can be man and wife before the baby is born.
Although Harper's ex-wife isn't celebrating, Dern's parents, Bruce Dern and
Diane Ladd, are delighted their daughter is expecting.
"Laura's pregnancy is a beautiful, beloved, blessed and treasured occasion for
our family," Ladd told Star. But the turmoil has left the actress saddened.
"This should be the happiest time of her life, but Laura is upset that she's
being called a homewrecker," insiders say. "She insists Ben's marriage was on
the rocks before they met and fell in love."
That pales next to Joanna's fear – that he'll turn his back on his kids with
her once Dern's baby is born.
"Joanna is heartbroken that Harris and Charles will be forced to share their
daddy when their time with him is already limited," says a friend.
Sources say Harper – who has just finished a tour with the Dave Matthews Band
and has a new CD, Live From Mars – is already spending most of his free time
with Dern, decorating their new $1.7 million love nest, sources reveal.
But insiders close to Dern say she is so determined to have a good relationship
with Harper's kids that she's already decorating rooms for them in their new
home.
"Divorce is never easy, especially on children," says a friend.
"But Laura and Ben intend to do everything possible to make sure his children
are happy and cared for."
