Dog Killer Ordered To Read 'Lassie'

GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) -- A man who pleaded guilty to skinning and beheading a dog
was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to read the "Lassie'' books.

Jason Vincent Revels, 19, was charged with felony animal cruelty in the
November death of his mother's mixed pit bull. He was not eligible for jail
time under state sentencing rules.

At a hearing Monday, Revels said he blacked out and did not remember killing
the dog.

Superior Court Judge Claude Sitton said he did not believe the teen and ordered
him to read the "Lassie'' books.

The judge also ordered Revels to undergo a psychological evaluation and forbade
him to have pets during probation.

Revels, who has prior convictions for assault with a deadly weapon and
marijuana possession, told police he killed the dog because his mother told him
to get rid of it.

These cases mystify me, as it is not illegal to kill your own dog. It IS
illegal to make the animal suffer first....such as in a prolonged death.
Killing it outright is not a crime however.

Ah, but he didn't kill his *own* dog, Elaine, and it's generally illegal
to destroy someone else's property. If you read the article carefully,
you'll see that the conviction was for "animal cruelty", so I'm going to
take a wild guess that perhaps the dog wasn't dead before he...well, use
your imagination.

I've never read the "Lassie" books--didn't even know they existed--but
I'll bet the judge meant Albert Payson Terhune's collie books ("Lad, A
Dog", etc.), which are probably much better written than anything cranked
out to fit a TV series.

Me too -- although my copies are long gone. I still remember the one
where the kennelmen thought that one of the dogs (not Lad) had rabies and
they were about to put her to death, then they found out just in time that
her symptoms were due to having a chicken bone stuck in her throat ... brr
... I had bad dreams about that one!

Animal cruelty should be a major felony & a red flag that someone is a
timebomb waiting to go off. If you can do that to a defenseless
animal, you will have no problem torturing another human being! They
should get jail time & a psychiatric evaluation.

Are they going to give him a quiz on the 'Lassie' books to make sure
he read them? What kind of inane punishment is that?
