So was Rock Hudson. And Freddy Mercury. Even Elton John was on the verge of
marrying a women at one point. His song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" is
about how his friend Long John Baldry talked him out of it.

Being married (to a woman) is no proof that someone is straight.

I have a friend who worked at the same gym as Richard Simmons worked at
in the late 70's in LA. This was long before Simmons was even remotely
famous, but he was feverishly working on getting his "big break." He
schmoozed with everyone, kissed major ass and did and said the right
things to the right people.

My friend swears Simmons was a big womanizer and was not gay. I know, I
know... I laughed in his face for at least 10 minutes. He says, "I was
there. I knew him. The guy is straight."

I've heard from others the gay thing is just an act. If true, it sure
is a good one.

Well hey - you never know.

Just because the guy isn't a bit masculine doesn't make him gay... my
next door neighbor comes across as hugely flamingly gay (almost but not
quite as bad as Richard Simmons) but he's divorced AND he gets girly
mags in the mail (I collected his mail for him one time when he was out
of town).

I doubt a gay guy would have subscriptions to girly mags just to keep up
the appearance of being straight.

Elton John did marry a woman--Renate--in the 1980s. They divorced when he
realized he was gay rather than bisexual (he'd already come out as bi before
they'd married).

Freddie Mercury never married. Mary Astin was a former girlfriend who
remained a lifelong friend and inherited much of his estate, but they
never married.

That was fiancee #1, in the late 60s. He did marry a different woman in
the 80s.

clearly an act.

I saw a program where someone - one of his bandmates, maybe Brian May - said
that Mercury _was_ married for several years. They at least showed pictures
of his wife and may have interviewed her as well; it's a long time ago and I
don't remember clearly.

Paul Newman?? You gotta be kidding! He's been happily married to Joanne
Woodward since 1958 and was previously married to another woman for almost a
decade; he had three kids with each wife. I've never once heard even a hint
of whisper of a rumour that he was anything but straight.

Some of these other people you've mentioned might be gay but I'd be pretty
darned surprised if Newman was. And I'd certainly want to see some proof,
not just your allegation.

Richard may be 100% gay these days, but in the 70's, he did have
relationships with women. I can hardly believe it myself, but I have a
friend who knew him very well then and Richard was definitely into
women 25-30 years ago. I assume he was closeted in the 70's and merely
chose to broadcast his affairs with women. He was a very good tipper,
treated his lady friends well and remained friends with them after the
romance ended.

He tipped his ladyfriends? Tipping implies he paid them a set rate, as
well...

I think a ladyfriend that you pay and tip is usually referred to as a
prostitute... I suppose you can be friends with your prostitute... repeat
business and all that.

Or he sneaks out into the field while they're sleeping and tips them
over.

Paul Newman sure does a good job pretending to be hetereosexual. I wonder
if his wife of many years knows? I wonder if his children know?

Have you been asleep for 20 years, Rip Van Winkle?

He's gay. His long time boyfriend's mother was the neighbor of my aunt
(now deceased) in KY. The boyfriend is a wonderful guy, and he and
Richard treat his mother like a queen. Long ago, one of my aunt's
neighbor shot himself in the head, the whole neighborhood was devasted,
and Richard's boyfriend was the one who cleaned up the mess for his
neighbor's wife. My aunt said you couldn't find a nicer, sweeter
person. Hope that answers your question.

The sentence structure *was* correct when I wrote that Simmons is "a
good tipper." There was no inference that he tipped his lady friends
well or visited prostitutes. Obviously I meant he was a good tipper
when he was a patron in restaurants.

Also in the 70's, there was no gay act going on, he acted completely
normal, didn't screech with his voice, make fawning Liberace-like hand
gestures or prance around in that hideous blue outfit.

I believe Simmons is totally gay, I'm merely saying that 30 years ago
he went out with women, had intimnate relationships with them and
didn't act effeminate.

That's all I need to know about someone's character.

may have been obvious to you, but the inference in the post was that he
tpped the lady friends.

Elton John was married, to a sound engineer down under. For some
years. They're "still friends."

That would have to mean Matt Perry, also a longtime bachelor, is gay,
too. And Elliot Gould, another Friends regular. Elliot was married
to and then dumped by Barbra Streisand. If Barbra isn't a faghag, who
is ?

She had a well - known boyfriend in Washington, DC when she anchored
the 11 p.m. news for WRC Channel 4 there during 1980 - 1982.

Why would Joanne Woodward, who never has had a problem with drugs or
alcohol, put up with Paul sleeping with men ? Don't tell me she's a
lesbian, please.

Is Jada stupid or one of those mothers who was born to be a mother, not
a lover ?

The rumor about him is so old, yet nobody ever names the prostitute he
supposedly hired.

Why don't those macho news cameramen call him a faggot ?

Yes, and it's gut-busting hilarious. I hadn't seen it before. Got up early
this morning, clicked the link, and even with the sound turned way down on
the computer, my loud laughter got George up out of bed to see what was so
darn funny.

Those improve guys are great, and Richard was so ... well ... willing to
make a fool of himself. :) A riot.
