Who is Carlene's real father? I know Johnny Cash is her step-dad. Did she
ever have any lasting hit records, ala Roseanne Cash? Has her drug problem
been recurring or was it constant? Does she have any children?

Hi, Ambrose
Carlene Carter's (real name Rebecca Carlene Smith) real father was
legendary Carl Smith. She was once married to Nick Lowe during which
she lived in London. She had two big hits with "Every Little Thing"
and "I Fell In Love".

When she was 15 she became pregnant and dropped out of school; by the
time she was 20 she had been married and divorced twice. While she was
married to Nick Lowe (her third marriage) she became ever more
dependant on cocaine and alcohol; during that time she had an ectopic
pregnancy that nearly killed her. It was then that she became more and
more involved with heavy partying (I guess this was in the early to mid
1980s).

Ms. Carter has a son and a daughter, both now adults.

Carl Smith. He was a big country star in the 50s and June's first
husband. Her second was named Rip Nix and they had a daughter named
Rosey. JC is her third husband and they have one son together. JC has
four daughters from his first marriage.

I know Johnny Cash is her step-dad. Did she

Several in the early 90s.

Has her drug problem

Recurring, AFAIK.

Does she have any children?
> Ambrose

A daughter named Tiffany who was born when CC was 16 and a son in his
20s by an ex-husband named Jack Routh. He got custody of the child by
claiming CC was an unfit mother (probably because of drugs). They were
married in the mid-70s, before her marriage to Nick Lowe.

Thanks Linda. I feel like an idiot, I knew Carlene was a real talent, but
had no idea was the daughter of the great Carl Smith. So sad, losing her
kids and all her potential to drugs. I really hate what drugs do to people.
Especially tonight. I talked to my son today and I'm afraid he might be
using again. I never let anyone get high around him when he was small, but
after his mother and I split, the courts decided that musicians were
unreliable as fathers and gave my ex support and alimony which allowed her
to get all slack and she smoked pot and entertained her men friends in
front of my son. Now she's become a vegetarian yuppie who lives with a
doctor and she wont let our son stay with her because he stresses her out.
Sorry for the complaining, I'm kind of down tonight.

.....i was a roadie for some of her contemporaries in the 80s and have a friend
that played in her band.
...after she split with Nick Lowe (whom i used to run into quite a bit when he
was dating Margot Kidder), Carlene dated a 16 year old guitar player...she must
have been in her mid 30s, (as was i...who dated the kid's MOM).
....the kid is now grown up and has a very high profile gig...but i wont
embarrass him by mentioning his name.

Don't feel bad, I never heard of Carl Smith before Carlene was
arrested.

Nick Lowe must be attracted to unstable women. Is he married to anyone
now?

Sexton plays in Bob Dylan's band now, and tours pretty much non-stop.

Is this the same "Every Little Thing" recorded by The Beatles?

No. "Like a wild horse i want to break you, I love you so much I hate
you". It was written by Carlene.

Now I really feel old, someone asking who Nick Lowe was. In the
summer of 78, if you didn't have a copy of "Labor of Lust," you were
definitely out of it.

He's also an ace record producer, best known for the Damned's first
album, Elvis Costello's first four LPs, and many others.

Also a member of Little Village with John Hiatt, Jim Keltner,
and.....forget the other one. Paul Carrack maybe?

And weird fact (to me anyway) is that Huey Lewis used to provide the
harmonica playing on the Rockpile/Dave Edmunds/Nick Lowe recordings.

Sorry! But I honestly have never heard of him. Was he a respected
artist in his day? And is he still recording?

He's a respected artist in _this_ day, thankyouverymuch. :-)

Isn't Ry Cooder dead?

Huey Lewis was in a band called Clover who also used to back up Elvis
Costello, IIRC.

If so, the All-Music Guide is not aware of that.
Neither is the guy at this site, and I'm betting he'd be aware.
