Naked Couple Killed In 50-Foot Fall
Autopsies Scheduled For Thursday
POSTED: 11:42 am PDT June 21, 2007
UPDATED: 12:43 pm PDT June 21, 2007

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Police in South Carolina said the deaths of two
people whose naked bodies were found on a Columbia street were
accidental.

Authorities said it appeared that the man and the woman, who were both
21, may have been having sex when they fell from the sloped roof of a
downtown office building.

Police said a cab driver found the couple alive at about 5 a.m.
Wednesday morning. However, they were pronounced dead at the hospital.

Autopsies were scheduled for Thursday.

The victims have been identified as Brent Tyler and Chelsey
Tubleston.

Brent Tyler and Chelsea Tumbleston, both 21-years-old, were the
victims, their clothing on the roof four stories above. Authorities
have not said what they were doing or why they were on the sloped
roof, which is pyramid-shaped metal, and likely was slick on a damp
morning.

I have been at Hilton Head Island (South Carolina) for the past 14 days and
this made the local paper four days straight...I guess so everyone had time
to make up their own punch line. However, the male *was* from Hilton Head
and the female from a nearby island -- they were students at USC in
Columbia.

It's unfortunate that they died, because they were young and attractive, and
it's always a tragedy when young, sexy people die before their time.
However, if they'd done this in the privacy of their own home, in the
missionary position, with a sheet and a hole in between them and the lights
out like the good Lord intended, instead of in a public place, in a
dangerous area, this wouldn't have happened.

Police say there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene.

At this point, it appears the two got onto the roof by an adjacent
parking garage. That's where officers say they found what they believe
are the victim's clothes.

Naomi Mosley and her husband occasionally sleep at the parking garage
where the couple gained access to the roof. She says she saw at least
some of what led up to the deaths.

"I was getting up, packing up my stuff to get it out of the place,"
she says, when she noticed a young, nude couple arrive in a car, and
climb onto the roof.

"When they came in, they was laughling, laughing and happy," says
Mosley. "Her arm was up in the air, and he was pulling her up. He said
'baby I got you.'"

"If I could have gave them a warning, and tell them that's dangerous,
go some other place," she says in retrospect.

Instead, Naomi says she and her husband decided to just mind their own
business. They packed up their belongings and exited the parking
garage around 5:30 a.m.

She then saw the taxi cab driver who found the bodies. Police were
arriving to block off the streets.

"I said Lord God, I hope they gave their soul to you."

Naomi says it's a sight she wishes she'd never seen.

"Right now, I feel heartache that it happened. Because I don't want my
worst enemy to fall off no roof like that."

Kelley Hartsell wants her eldest daughter to be remembered as a caring
young woman whose personality could light up a room, rather than being
remembered for the unusual manner of her death.

snip

"Unfortunately, those two children fell to the ground and died, and
were found by a cab driver, naked," Hartsell said.

"No one wants that to be their legacy," she said. "That is a child who
was working her way through college with her own money to become a
nurse."

snip

Because of the unusual nature of the deaths, the story was picked up
by media outlets across country.

"I think it's just terrible to be known as the naked person off of a
building, when she was one of the sweetest people I've known in my
life," said family friend Rhonda Reeves. "It's a tragedy, without a
doubt.

snip

"The police are still trying to figure out what happened," Hartsell
said. "It's not how she died, it's how she lived."

It is, entirely, tragic.

However...is it the sexual impulse...or something else...that is the
primary culprit here?

Or some combo?

Opinions?

I think it had more to do with falling off a building...

Did this happen in hillbilly country or what? I have to say I have
been reading so many stories in newspapers lately and the witnesses
are embarrassing, their use of grammar is appalling. Geez Louise.

Brian Corey, a manager for the restaurant chain, worked with Tyler in
Hilton Head. They began rooming together after coming to Columbia.

Corey said Tyler had a good personality and liked to joke.

"Whatever it took to get a laugh out of someone, he'd go for it,"
Corey said. "Food and beverage people are always stressed out and he
always turned the worst situation into something funny."

He also liked the outdoors and was into fast cars, hockey and water
sports, Corey said.

"I drove by there yesterday; I just wanted to go up there," Corey said
of the building from which his roommate fell.

"I think ... it was kind of a place for him to reflect. He's a
thinker; when he has decisions he needs to make he would take his time
and think it out. He mentioned to me a spot that was really cool and
you could see over the whole city. I'm assuming that was it."

There's nothing funny about two kids who fell for each other at the
same time.

The fact that it was on a roof gives the story a unique slant.. Do you

What is the local news reporting about it? Were they
married to others? They looked young in the photos I
found. It also showed the roof and it was one of those
new corrogated metal roofs that slanted. Looked like
a bad location for their get together.
