Is it true that Mariska is a (closeted) lesbian? I don't believe it but my
co-worker swears he read an article outing her. Has anyone heard this?

My understanding is that she is, or was, Jodie Foster's
girlfriend. But I'm not sure that she's all that closeted.
Granted, I've never heard her talk about her private life, but
there haven't been any heated denials or conspicuous hetero
dates, either. I think she's just a very private person.

Yuppers. I could see a couple hang-ups stemming from having her as a mom,

A lot of people think that and she Jokes about it on Conan one night but
said she has a boyfriend. Incidentally a woman I know saw her in NYC with a
good looking guy and said they looked very much in love, so I'm inclined to
think the stories about her being a Lesbian are either wishful thinking by
some or because she has short hair and her character on her show is so
strident. But speaking as a guy, I don't pick up any Lesbian vibes from her.
Of course I've been wrong before, but I think if a woman as beautiful as
Mariska were, she would be like Ingrid Casares or Jenny Simizu (sp)(a
Japanese name) or one of the other drop dead beautiful Lesbians and every
Lesbian or Bi or straight woman "looking to experiment" in Hollywood would
pursuing her and I haven't hear anything like that from my sources, so my
vote, at this point is, that she's not a Lesbian.

Hmmm. Care to share your reasons for that statement? Everything I've ever
heard or read about Jayne Mansfield said she was *extremely* intelligent and
the "blonde bombshell" thing was just an act. Also heard she and Mickey
were good parents.

If you're talking about the fact that the children were in the back seat
asleep during the fatal car accident, then yes...I can see that would cause
some trauma. But you said "had her mom been alive longer".

When I think of Jayne Mansfield I think of those photos of her and
Sophia Loren, where more than a little bit of Jayne's cleavage is
showing and Sophia is eyeing it.

And she's around 40, and looks better than Demi, and I don't believe
Mariska has had any work done on herself.

I hated the character she played on ER, Dr. Mark Greene's whiny needy
doormat girlfriend. But she's a great actress to be able to do such
entirely different characters.

I think he would be out about it if he were bi. Maybe he is, but it ain't my
business. He is very gay friendly. He's married to a set designer (or something
similar) named Sherman Williams and I am sure that causes confusion because his
spouse is a SHE even with that name. He does have a young daughter that is
under 2. Those who think he was doing something with one of the other Oz men,
well, I think that's just wishful thinking.

There was a TV documentary on in the UK about 3 weeks ago regarding
Jayne Mansfield and it was mentioned that Mariska has said she
"rememberers clearly" the accident. It also came out that Mickey beat
the hell out of Jayne on several occasions.

Mariska would have been about four in 1967 and was the most seriously
injured of the kids, so it's no surprise that she remembers it.

From the books on Jayne I've read, Mickey was probably the best and
most patient of Jayne's husbands. Matt Cimber and Sam Brody (her
lawyer/lover who died with her) both beat her. It's been rumored that
Mariska isn't really Mickey's biologically. MH & JM were separated and
Jayne was dating some Italian guy when Mariska was conceived, but she
later went back to Mickey and he raised the child as his own.

I wouldn't think she would remember the accident as she wasn't even 3

Supposedly she had an IQ in the 160 range, at least that's what she

Mariska probably wisely realized that she'd have a longer shelf life as a
serious actress than to mimic her mother's as a blonde bombshell. Besides, we
have the likes of Pam Anderson to fill that void.

I read an interview (Emmy Magazine, September I think) where Mariska
said she didn't want to be judged by her mother's fame (or infamy)
that is why she chose to keep her father's semi famous name (and her
birth name) rather than trade on her mother's instantly recognizable
name.

Jayne Mansfield: The brand called two
By Andrew Nelson
Salon
August 6, 2001

Excerpt:

........But by 1965 it was over. The "big girl" had become a desperate
woman. "An old bag" was how uncharitable mop top Paul McCartney
described the then 32-year-old actress to Playboy that June.
Mansfield's last two years were a sad decline. The press dried up.
Movie offers vanished. Her days consisted of fifths and fists as
alcohol and an abusive boyfriend, Los Angeles trial lawyer Sam Brody,
left their marks on the famous figure. Mansfield was reduced to rounds
of telethon and dinner theater appearances. She was returning to New
Orleans from just such an engagement in Biloxi, Miss., on June 29,
1967, when she died. Her car's driver, his vision obscured by a
mosquito sprayer, ran under a tractor-trailer. The collision peeled
back the car's roof -- instantly killing the driver, Mansfield, Brody
and two of the star's Chihuahuas. Even now the rumor persists that she
was decapitated. She wasn't. "Scalped" is the most polite word to
describe what happened.

snip

What destroyed Jayne Mansfield? Forget agents or pop historians. The
answer may lie with the alchemists of capitalism -- the brand
managers. Marketing consultant Matt Park, a former General Mills
product manager, is no stranger to packaged goods; he specialized in
Betty Crocker potatoes and Gold Medal flour. To Park, Mansfield's sad
fate is a case history of a product that failed to evolve with its
customer base.

"At that time the culture was moving from the '50s to the post-Kennedy
era," Park says. "The entire nation was reevaluating what was ideal,
what should change. The start of the antiwar, anti-military movement,
the rise of feminism -- these were significant shifts in the public's
attitude and mind-set. Mansfield never made the transition."

In marketing parlance, Mansfield the brand had lost her "resonance."
Her audience no longer wanted what she was selling. Hollywood's other
blond bombshell, Marilyn Monroe, had made an unexpected, if
posthumously fortuitous, career move by dying early enough (in 1962)
to avoid a similar fate. Mansfield was not so lucky; she overstayed
her welcome. When American male sexual fantasies turned from
torpedo-breasted pinups to braless hippie chicks somewhere in the
mid-1960s, Mansfield was doomed. The new competition was, at the time,
unlikely stars like flat-chested model Twiggy or raw-voiced rock
singer Janis Joplin.

Who cares if she's gay or if she's funny? As this is a gossip newsgroup, a lot
of people would probably interested to learn whether she's gay or not. That's
just one of the things we talk about a lot here....

It's too bad...seeking approval from all the wrong people. I can
believe Jayne wasn't a moron, she didn't make the best choices at
times, but many people who knew her say that she was a good soul. And
Mariska certainly isn't a dummy, doesn't she speak something like
three or four languages?

Not quite true. She did an early-morning talk show in NO while appearing
at Gus Stevens' supper club in Biloxi. The driver was Stevens' chauffeur.

That was Jayne & Sophia on the original HB cover. Jayne's nipple was
painted pink.

More like she's plopped it on the table in front of Sophia.

Thanks, Linda! I knew I remembered that one correctly. As though
anyone could forget... ;>

(It invoked fond memories of debauchery traipsing through the Village
and at Studio 51 with my fav friend from my college days...one of the
original Club Kids...)

Well, considering the mores of the day, having a pink nipple in your

==========

Last night, I saw part of an old episode of L&O:SVU, where Mariska's
hair was longer & darker. Her beauty did detract some, from her
acting talent & from the story line. I like her hair better now
(shorter & lighter-colored), because it doesn't detract.

While I like L&O:SVU, my favorite is still L&O:CI with Vincent D'O.
Wow! :)

She liked pink a lot. I read that the people who bought her home
tried to repaint the pool and other parts of the house, but every time
a coat of paint was applied, the pink would show through again. They
kept reapplying and reapplying paint but the pink color would keep
showing through all those layers. Some think it's a sort of haunting.
