These are on the list as having the illness but don't know for sure
about their gay or bi lifestyle: Anthony Perkins, Brad Davis ( of
Midnight Express fame), Tony Hamilton of the New Mission Impossible (in
late 80s), Jim Henson of the Muppets, Liberace, and hundreds of writers,
directors, and behind the scenes folks in Hollywood. Could Paul Lynde
from the old Hollywood Squares have also died from this in the early
80s? Oh yea and the lead singer of Queen. Anymore famous ones ?

About your list I am almost positive that Jim Henson did
not die from Aids. According to www.imdb.com he died from
pneumonia which could have been as a result of Aids but
i am almost positive that he didn't have Aids. Since he
was a children's entertainer that little fact would have
been all over the place.

Also according to www.imdb.com Paul Lynde died from cancer.

***Jim Henson died of a strep infection--not AIDS. Dack Rambo (from Dallas)
and the father from the Brady Bunch died from it, too. Years ago, People
Magazine listed Amanda Blake from Gunsmoke as an AIDS victim, but the IMDb says
she died of oral cancer.

A lot of people that died were HIV+ but will have another cause of death
listed. AIDS shuts down the immune system so a number of illnesses can
take you out. Robert Reed (father on the Brady Bunch) was HIV+ but
that was not listed as the cause of death for example.

This is a regular thread on Alt.Obituary whenever the cause of death
for someone involves them being HIV+

I thought he died of a heart attack?

As to Paul Lynde, I seem to recall the "official" cause was also a heart
attack, but I am trying to rack my brain as to the time period. I
remember that he appeared in a play at the Atlanta Civic Center about 6
months before he died, and in a newspaper interview, never gave any
indication that he was sick, but I distinctly remember the pic that
accompanied the story and he did _not_ look too good.

I don't think he was ever officially "out"-can anyone with a better
memory than me set me straight (no pun intended!) on this one?

I was always a big fan of Mr. Lynde. I didn't know that either of us were
homosexual until later in life, but that is another story. I loved watching
him on "Bewitched." My own mother said that I reminded her a lot of him.
Little did she know.

In any case it appears that Paul died in 1982. According to the info at
http://home.att.net/~joeandscot/PLTIME.HTML

1982
Early on January 11, Paul's body is found by friends after he fails to
appear at a dinner party. The 55 year old actor had died of a massive heart
attack and as a result of natural causes.

I'm pretty sure she died from some AIDS related illness. Amanda Blake
was married to a local politician in Austin, TX. I was living in Austin
shortly after the politician passed away. There was a bit of a scandal
at the time - seems he was well known in Austin's gay scene although he
remain closeted in public life. The cause of his death was never really
revealed, but it was common knowledge that it was AIDS related. A lot of
people I know believe that Amanda Blake contracted HIV from him (jeez, I
wish I could remember the guys name - sorry).

Hasn't it always been suspected that Raul Julia died from AIDS
complications. For about a year before he passed he kept dropping out
of projects because he was fighting something like a reccurring stomach
flu.

Yeah, I think that's the guy. Thanks Judith. Story was that she caught
him in bed with a man, but who knows if that's true. Supposedly he
married her because he needed a beard and because of her fame. The other
rumor was that she had no idea he was gay when she married him. I lived
in Austin back in 1985, so I'm a bit fuzzy on the details. The whole
thing always seemed so sad to me.

Paul Lynde died of a heart attack as the result of inhaling amyl nitrate
(poppers) during sex with a guy. When soap stars, Dennis Parker and Joel
Crothers died in the mid-80s, it was attributed to cancer. Procter &
Gamble didn't want the viewers to think they had gay actors. Since then
P&G has included AIDS in storylines with openly gay actors. Rene
Enqriquez of "Hill Street Blues" also died of the disease.

I'm going out from lurking to answer this one. Jim Henson died of a virulent
form of pneumonia, not AIDS. He apparently had been sick for a days with
what he thought was a cold and didn't seek medical help. By the time he
finally sought help, it was too late. I remember this quite clearly, because
for the next year or two I made damn sure my husband went to see his doctor
when any cold seemed to last too long. When my husband tried to brush it off,
I said: "Remember Jim Henson?" (who is still sorely missed).

IIRC, there was talk later of poppers (amyl nitrate) being involved.

Whoever said Amanda Blake ("Miss Kitty") was correct. Also, Wayland
Flowers of "Wayland & Madame". Less known except to cult movie fans,
Cookie Mueller (of several John Waters films such as "Pink Flamingoes and
"Female Trouble"). And, I'm assuming you mean "TV/movie actors", since
hundreds of stage/Broadway personalities have perished (Michael Bennett,
producer of "A Chorus Line", off the top of my head).

One way to find out about someone is to see if he/she has a panel in the
NAMES Project Quilt. Now, obviously, that is not a comprehensive list AND
it is possible that someone could have a panel and not really have died of
AIDS, but usually, panels are made by someone who knew the person and thus
would have known. The entire Quilt is searchable at www.aidsquilt.org

□ Can Liberace be considered an actor? He did have that TV series in the

...well, he also was in THE LOVED ONE, so at the least he had a SAG card...

...same for Della Barris, Chuck's daughter and a supporting player in THE
GONG SHOW MOVIE, who appears to have OD'd as a result of an HIV-related
depression...

...and, tho I don't think he was in any movies (correct me if I'm wrong
there), certainly his work on TV qualifies him to be an actor of sorts, so
I'll toss in the name of Kenny Everett...

Buttrick, Merritt, actor, noted for roles such as "Richie" in "Fright Night
Part II" (1989), "Dr. David Marcus" (son of "Admiral Kirk") in "Star Trek II:
The Wrath of Khan" (1982) & "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock" (1984), Gary
Cooter in "Zapped (1982), "T'Jon" in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode
"Symbiosis" (4/16/1988) and "Billy Christiansen" in "Fame" episode "Equals"
(6/10/1984). He was a pretty good actor with a pretty bad career (and the
*cutest* little butt).

Merrit Buttrick was also in the awful overrateed teen series called Square
Pegs.
The series was funny the first episode, but after that , it seemed that even
the laugh track couldn't be coaxed to laugh.
One episode in particulal, Father Guido Sarducci had to exorcise one of
Buttricks friends because he was possessed by the pac man machine.

Kenny Everett had his own tv series and starred in Bloodbath at the House of
Death. That has to qualify him as an actor."He had a SAG card". To qoute a
fellow poster.

Speak for yourself. Square Pegs was one of my favorite tv shows.

Mine too! Can you believe how Sarah Jessica Parker turned out?

Re actors who have died of AIDS since Rock Hudson, I can't remember his name
but he was the dark-haired "Todd Chandler" on Days of Our Lives and eventually
ended up on Dynasty as a horseman. He was the second Dynasty actor to succumb
to the disease.

I was in Australia recently and caught "The Boy From Oz", a musical about Peter
Allen. Anybody know of plans to bring this to the US? It's absolutely terrific,
and the songs (Allen's of course) are perfect for the show.

Re: Merritt Butrick's career

Ah, Robbie, how can you say he had a pretty bad career? He was not only
in two incarnations of "Trek," he played Kirk's son ... *snif* Trekkers
like me will always remember him fondly. :) Anyway, he was a cutie.

I also remember him fondly from the first thing I saw him in, something
you left off your list, perhaps purposely. He was in "Square Pegs" in
the early eighties, along with Jami Gertz & Sarah Jessica Parker.
