FROM JAMES BONE IN NEW YORK
JOHN F. KENNEDY JR was grappling with his love for another woman in the weeks
before he and his wife died in a plane crash off Martha's Vineyard in July,
according to a close friend.
The famous family circled the wagons yesterday after a friend of Mr Kennedy was
quoted as saying that Carolyn Bessette Kennedy had consulted a divorce lawyer
and hired private detectives to check if her husband was cheating.
People close to the glamorous couple say that Mr Kennedy had admitted that
someone other than his wife was the love of his life. One rumour circulating
among friends is that the former President's son may not have been alone when
he checked into a New York hotel just two days before the crash - a move that
had aroused comment because he lived only a short taxi ride away.
A close friend was quoted yesterday as saying that Mr Kennedy and his wife had
not been sleeping together for 18 months: she slept in the spare room of their
loft in New York's trendy Tribeca, while he remained alone in the marital bed.
"She simply refused to have sex with John. I believe she was genuinely ill,"
the friend told the Daily Mail. "It's staggering to think that he put up with
it. He could have had his pick of beautiful women - they would have been
discreet - but he chose to remain true to Carolyn, even though she refused to
sleep with him."
The couple, who met jogging in Central Park, were the toast of the town after
their private wedding on a remote island off the coast of Georgia on September
2, 1996.
President Kennedy's only son was dubbed the "sexiest man alive" and his lithe,
blonde wife, a public-relations aide to Calvin Klein, the fashion designer, was
regarded as a worthy successor to his style-setting mother, Jackie Kennedy
Onassis. Yet apparently she found it hard to adjust to the glare of publicity
that had surrounded "John-John" ever since he saluted the casket of his
assassinated father at the age of three.
"When Carolyn first moved in to John's Tribeca apartment, he was convinced she
would be able to cope with the pressure of his fame. And in the early days, she
did," the friend was quoted as saying, "but after their marriage she changed.
She was a bit like Princess Diana in that sense.
"Everything suddenly fell apart in the months following the honeymoon.
Suddenly, she was Mrs John F. Kennedy Jr, and not just the live-in girlfriend,
and she reacted like a frightened deer caught in the car headlights." The
friend alleged that Ms Bessette Kennedy had been put on anti-depressants by her
doctor and had developed a cocaine problem, even though her husband begged her
to stop taking the drug.
"One day I went round to collect John to go for a beer, and Carolyn unwrapped a
small white envelope and poured some of the white powder on to the back of what
I believe was a small slab of marble," the friend said. "She chopped at it with
what looked like a single-edged razor. Then she spread it into lines and
quickly inhaled several times through a small silver tube, which she then waved
towards us. Neither of us was interested, so she did some more herself."
Earlier this year, Mrs Kennedy is said to have consulted a divorce lawyer about
the couple's pre-nuptial agreement, which limited her to $3 million (£1.87
million) if the marriage lasted between three and ten years.
The couple began attending weekly marriage counselling sessions and she is said
to have hired private detectives in the belief that her husband was straying.
In the final months of their lives, the couple had begun having rows in public
and in front of staff at Mr Kennedy's George magazine.
Mrs Kennedy was understood to have been particularly upset by her husband's
political ambitions, fearing that a run for public office would take him away
from her.
In the week before their fatal plane crash, she is said to have stormed out of
their last therapy session and failed to return home for two nights.
On Wednesday July 14, just two days before the accident, she called him at the
office and the two had a heated conversation, which ended with Mr Kennedy
shouting: "That's it. You've gone too far. Get your stuff, get out of my
apartment and get out of my life."
Leaving his wife's photograph face down on his office desk, Mr Kennedy decided
not to go home and checked into a smart New York hotel.
One explanation given shortly after the crash was that he needed solitude to
prepare for a crucial business meeting the next day, but some friends question
whether he was really alone that night.
According to the close friend, Mr Kennedy prepared to break the news to his
family that his marriage had collapsed, but Mrs Kennedy's sister, Lauren
Bessette, intervened to rescue the situation by promising to accompany the
couple to the Kennedy family wedding in Hyannisport that weekend.
On the evening of Friday July 16, Mr Kennedy picked up his sister-in-law in his
white Hyundai to take her to the airport in New Jersey, while his wife arrived
by taxi for their fateful final flight. As the troubled nature of their
marriage has become more widely known in the months following their deaths,
speculation has grown about whether a row could have contributed to the crash.

Kennedy family and friends are bristling over a British tabloid's claims that
John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy had "given up on their
marriage" and were about to split when they were killed in a plane crash July
16.
Citing unnamed pals of Kennedy, the bombshell story by Annette Witheridge and
Paul Bracchi in the Daily Mail claims the couple hadn't even slept together in
18 months.
Fed up with his willowy wife's alleged cocaine use and bizarre behavior, JFK
Jr. supposedly told her to "get out of my life" just two days before their
fateful flight.
The newspaper's claims rankled those close to the Kennedys. "I don't want to
dignify this with a response," said Sen. Ted Kennedy's spokesman, Jim Manley.
A source close to the clan told The Post's Braden Keil: "We should let the dead
rest in peace."
The Mail article claims the couple had been attending counseling sessions in a
last-ditch attempt to save their 3-year-old marriage.
Four days before the plane crash, Carolyn stormed out of a session and failed
to return home for two nights, it claims.
When she finally called Kennedy at George magazine, he is said to have exploded
in anger, kicking his office door shut and shouting at her.
"That's it. You've gone too far. Get your stuff, get out of my apartment and
get out of my life," he said, according to the paper.
The fight was so serious that the couple decided they would not attend cousin
Rory Kennedy's wedding at the family compound at Hyannis Port - and it was
Carolyn's sister Lauren who finally talked John into taking them there.
The Mail even quotes an unnamed Kennedy friend suggesting that Carolyn was so
volatile, she may have grabbed John during the flight or screamed at him and
caused the crash. The newspaper claims the Kennedy-Bessette union began
deteriorating almost immediately after their 1996 wedding.
Carolyn allegedly turned to antidepressants and indulged often in cocaine.
A friend of JFK Jr.'s is quoted: "John hated her doing cocaine and often
complained that she was high. She was the last person in the world who should
have been doing cocaine, because she was nervous and uptight."
Six months ago, JFK Jr. supposedly told a friend, "It's over. I just can't cope
anymore."
Meanwhile, Carolyn hired private detectives to follow her husband, the paper
claims.

I have thought about this and decided: it's a cheap shot. These people are
dead and gone and there's no way to verify the accuracy of the report.
Now that I have rejected the matter, I must ask myself: Why do articles
such as this one run? Who is behind it? And, who benefit$ ? I have a
broken heart for the Bissettes who lost two of their three children. There
lies the true pain.

Just what kind of a close friend comes out and says this, just when all the JFK
publicity has finally died down? There were a lot more close friends who didn't
mind giving their names who said that the marriage seemed to be happy. They
were, after all, a very private couple- and it's possible to see/hear one fight
and take it completely out of context.
Although I like the comment about waiting til mummy dies to get divorced. It's
just too good of a quote to be true.
This whole article is crap. First of all, the waiting-till-"mummy"-dies-quote
is definintely wrong. JFK, Jr. was still seeing Daryl Hannah when Jackie
passed away. Jackie even asked to speak with Daryl right before she passed
and, several times, JFK, Jr. has stated that he wished his mother could have
met Carolyn. Furthermore, if these people were so unhappy, they certainly
didnt appear to be so-- particularly in the photos of the two of them in the
last year of their life. I believe Carolyn was becoming more comfortable with
publicity. They cuddled in public in many photos and she often sat in his lap
or either of them were caught nuzzling or kissing the other's neck. They were
all smiles in their last year. This behavior certainly doesnt mirror the
behavior of most troubled relationships. Look at Demi and Bruce-- they were
never photographed together towards the end of their relationship and certainly
didnt appear happy individually. I think this article is appalling. They
should be remembered as what they were-- a normal couple who loved each other
and died too soon.
Jo, who believed Carolyn Bessette Kennedy was the embodiment of grace and
style, not a cocaine-snorting depressed basket-case
Uh, did you read the article? That quote wasn't in there. I heard that
elsewhere and contributed it sheerly for the laugh factor.

I agree Kramer, the authors of this kind of article neverstop to think how
their lies could hurt the bystanders.

True, true, and true. The wise and perceptive AGC queen has spoken.

and God knows, anyone is gonna have more inside info than me :)
Did you read my post? I wasnt saying the quote was in there. I said the
article was crap and then I addressed the quote. To be funny or not, some
people out there probably took it seriously. I thought they should also be
informed that it probably wasnt true.
Jo
The quote was supposedly a *real incident* -- it wasn't fabrication. I just
can't remember where I read or heard it right now. It'll come to me about four
months from now when no one even cares anymore.
Volfie -> and, yes, I admit to not reading your entire post -- I stopped
reading when it looked like my quote was being attributed to the article. I
felt that needed correction.
What's going on with the possible Bissette litigation against the JFK Jr
estate?
Kramer
First of all, the kind of people who come out and say things like this about
Ms. Bessette are people who tried to be friends with her but she probably
jerked over in life. Second, I live in NY and have friends who work at trendy
restaurants that CBK would frequent and she was always in there with people
like Kelly Klein (calvin's ex) getting drunk and acting obnoxious- never
"graceful". Third, Candance Bushnell (who wrote the coulmns that Sex and the
City are based on) had a monthly "fictional" column in Manhattan File magazine
that followed the narcissistic, drugged-up, travails of a woman whose initials
were something like CKB (i can't remember but it was obviously a play on
carolyn's name). The woman in these stories was always running from paparazzi,
popping pills and complaining that her famous hubby didn't spend enough time
with her. Since Bushnell is a NYer in the know and has based almost everything
she's written on real people and events, I always beleievd this coulmn was a
direct poke at CBK. after her death, the coulmn was never seen again.
and while i do think that whoever this woman was like in life (and the article,
if true, doesn't say anything bad about John. makes him look like a saint), the
one good thing I think it does is expose that this painfully thin, expensively
blonde woman who made a career out of marrying a hapless rich guy is not "the
embodiment of grace and style" as the media and this society would like you to
believe.
What makes this woman any better than a housewife in Iowa who is trying to
raise happy, healthy children? Why should CBK be deified?

LOL! I wondered the same thing. And a white one at that! He had Jeep at

I am certainly not trying to assert CBK as anyone better than the housewife in
Iowa. I, myself, am far removed from the celebrity scene and so have a healthy
respect for the housewives of the world, my own mother being one of the best.
However, I would like to add that, as a distant observer, I really liked JFK,
Jr. and his wife. It was nice--refreshing even-- to see two young people
married and still in love years later. I particularly liked Carolyn because
she didnt seem to chase after the spotlight but instead shied away from it. In
other words, she was *not* Gwyneth Paltrow. I dont think she wanted to "make a
career" as JFK, Jr's wife. It was just part of being with him. I thought they
were beautiful together. That's all. If they were still alive, I would revert
into my gossip stance that they can fend for themselves. The fact that they
are dead makes this article particularly cruel and unfair. There. Ive said my
peace.
Jo
>what had you ever heard that she
>had done that would cause you to think well of her?
Well, for one, JFK, Jr looked happy with her and she with him. IMO that
happiness looked genuine when they were in public.
>She didn't "seek" the spotlight because she had no vehicle for that. she was
>not an actress or a model so to do magazine spreads or whatever would just

And yet so many others truly interested in the spotlight would have lept at the
chance --tacky and vain or not. I believe had she really been interested in
all that she would have appeared on every magazine cover offered. After all,
her fame was legitimate--even though by association. It certainly would be no
different or worse than Celine Balitran in People Mag just because she dated
George Clooney. Hell, for that matter, who raised an eyebrow when Gwyneth
Paltrow was on every publication around with little or no movie experience
under her belt *but* Brad Pitt on her arm.
>to me she seemed like more of a poser for doggedly chasing
>the most famous guy in the world and then playing this whole "leave me alone"
>thing. in her situation, when someone tries to snap you on the street you
>smile
Many of both Carolyn and JFK, Jr's friends say that it was JFK, Jr., not
Carolyn, who was doing the chasing. I agree, however, that Carolyn knew how to
play her cards right. As for her reluctance to smile, I believe she was
genuinely uncomfortable with the publicity. She started to warm up in her last
year and smiles in nearly every pic.
> if her privacy meant that much she
>wouldn't have gone through the rigors of that courtship.
If she really loved him, she would have done anything for him and I believe she
did.
As for charity work, as you said, they had only been married for two years. As
I said, she was just beginning to warm up to the limelight. Who knows what she
would have done had she been give more time on this earth?
Jo, just a different opinion--we all have them.
Wonder if it is why she didn't use the Continental Airline ticket that was
issued to her?? News reports not too long after the crash said that the sister
had gotten a ticket on Continental but then decided to go with JFK JR and wife.
Not to speak ill of the dead, but circumstances did hand her that line, in
that she *did* have to wait until JO died.
This does remind me of an old joke though.
A man and a woman, both well into their 90s, appear before a judge to get a
divorce. They tell him a tale of such mutual loathing and bitterness that
he's forced to ask them, "Why on earth did you stay married for so long
when you were so miserable."
"Well, your honour, we wanted to wait until the children died."

Actually, the Hyundai fits with a certain "I live downtown in a gritty
neighborhood and get around on my own steam" ethic of a native New
Yorker. A cheap, small, beater car is easy to park in the city,
doesn't attract thieves, can be battered & abused without much care.
If you live in lower Manhattan, way lower Manhattan, you have to park
in front of warehouses, mounds of garbage, loading docks. DOesn't
matter that some of those warehouses contain million dollar lofts. A
Hyundai is in character with this sort of lifestyle.
I read that he had bought a $200K Porsche or some such (Ferrari?) in
the last year of his life. anybody else remember this? You do not
drive that flashy of a car around NYC only because there's no place
you can leave it, unless you drive in a big circle and return to your
garage. And anybody driving that kind of car around town only wants
attention anyway. Why would JFK Jr. need more attention in NY?
I noticed at the time reports that Carolyn arrived at the airport in a
rented Town Car. NOt a regular, yellow cab taxi, but a car service.
THis also makes sense - the Upper class NYers I have known often hire
these big dark Lincoln Continentals from private car services as radio
taxis - you don't have to chance flagging a cab on the street, you get
a car when you want one, and it beats paying a regular chauffeur &
limo, the way a tacky Nouveau Plutocrat would. Stretch limos are for
arrivistes and prom night.

My point about the $200K sports car being that while I don't doubt he
bought one, I assumed he didn't keep it in the city. No place to drive
it fast, for one thing, and no place to park it once you take it out
of the garage. Also, too high profile for NYC.
LAS
Excellent point.

I had read she took a Town Car also. When we visited NYC last summer at the
suggestion of the bellman at our hotel we took a Town Car to the airport. It
cost only slightly more than a taxi and was a much better service.
