Old Hollywood: This Academy Award winning actor was always portrayed
as Mr. Tough Guy. Later in life he managed to irritate a great number
of people by some things he said and did. Earlier in life he probably
made some other people upset with his fondness for sleeping with
underage boys and girls. Often at the same time.

Someone who supported McCarthy's HUAC, obviously.

Like Charles Coburn?

Mr Tough Guy to me screams John Wayne who I can't stand.

Website guesses are all over the place with CHeston a favorite along with Brando
and Duvall.

One answer:

"OLD hollywood, folks.
and not john wayne. our boat was near his (yacht), when it was still a tight
community. the local gossip would have killed his career.
but when enty says old hollywood, i think we need to look further back.

a fun sidenote: @ ten years or so ago, my pretend sister was t-boned by a
corvette in santa clarita (CA, near six flags, sorta). she drives a jeep, so
there were no injuries, and at the time she swore the other driver must have
been drunk. found out later, of course the other driver was in early stage
dementia/alzheimers.
the other driver?
charlton heston.
robert duvall has a huge range, not mr. tough guy.
same with nicholson.
i'm thinking more jack webb, edward g. robinson, bogart, or cagney.
hope this one is revealed, because other names come to mind but since i suck at
guessing anyway..."

Yeah....Wayne's too new. He was detestible, but popular when alive.

Broderick Crawford. Now THERE'S a tough guy Oscar winner.

Cagney didn't win an Oscar, and neither did Jack Webb.

Edward G Robinson only had an "honorary" one, didn't win.

Bogart didn't have a bad rep.

Hey, I didn't even think of BCrawford. I like him just to be different. I
actually remember watching him on the TV series "Highway Patrol".

You're right. I shouldt have inserted an "and" between McC
and HUAC.

OK. My turn to be a pedant: Raft didn't win an Academy
Award (but otherwise, he does fit nicely).

I guess if there was ever a Mr Tough Guy in Old Hollywood, it has to be Raft. I
like your answer better than all the others. Only problem is that I don't think
he's an Oscar winner.

How 'bout Jack Palance? Academy Award winner, known for tough guy
roles, kinda wacko in his later years, and according to his imdb bio,
was a lifeguard at Jones Beach...works for me.

Where does the tip "Later in life he managed to irritate a great number
of people by some things he said and did" fit in? I can't think of any
controversies he was involved in.

Cagney won for Yankee Doodle Dandy (playing George M. Cohan) in the 30s.

Smokie Darling (Annie)

No one has guessed Kirk Douglas? He won an honorary Oscar. He played
"tough guy" roles most all of his career.

I'm not sure the BI means that the actor always played tough guy
roles, but rather he had "Man's Man" persona in the "world". Like
Errol Flynn. He was portrayed as hard drinking, hard partying, hard
loving. Or Clark Gable, also had the public "image" of being Mr.
Tough Guy. Not sure either of them won Oscars, but they are
possibilities.

Lee Marvin could be another choice.

There were a bunch of industry folks who weren't thrilled with his
performing "one handed push-ups" during his Oscar acceptance speech
and, as I recall through the mists of time, he gave a bunch of pretty
off the wall interviews as he got older that left me with impression
he was a bit of a wackadoodle.
