American Music Awards nominees

Move over, Whitney. Shove aside, Shania. There's a new diva in town.
The nominations for the American Music Awards are in, and perennial favorites
Whitney Houston and Shania Twain are getting some competition from teen popster
Britney Spears.
The 17-year-old singer and the two more senior musicians top this year's list
with three nominations apiece. They're also competing for the coveted favorite
female vocalist award.
A handful of other youngsters are giving more established stars a run for their
money at this year's edition of Dick Clark's alterna-Grammy's.
Nominees for the AMAs are compiled from music sales and radio airplay and
winners are selected by a national poll of 20,000 people. In the past, the show
tended to honor tepid, mainstream fare (see: Celine Dion), but it looks like
the face of the 27-year-old show is decidedly younger this year (if not any
less tepid and mainstream).
The teenybopper titans Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync are vying with the oldsters
in Santana for the top pop/rock group. The Dixie Chicks are going up against
the established likes of Garth Brooks and George Strait in the country
category. Heck, the entire Latin category is comprised of artists who made
their American music debuts this year, with Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez
and Ricky Martin squaring off.
