When did he die?
LOL, that was my first thought when I read the initial post, too. Maybe it
means the graves are being moved to a location closer to where he lives to
make it easier for him to visit.

Scandalous! What an outrage!
Why if Karen were alive today .... well, she'd be throwing up breakfast
about right now.

No one said he did. I imagine "closer" means Richard wants his family
buried closer to where he lives.
I really like the Carpenters' music, and I thought Karen's death was a
tragic loss of a beautiful, talented woman. I can still remember when I
heard the news. I was working as an intern in the New York State Civil
Service Department, and a co-worker's wife called to tell him she had just
heard the news, and he broke it to the rest of us.
So, I'm shocked and outraged with myself that after reading the above post,
all I can think about is the song "Close to You".

Sad but funny Big J
Seriously though - I took a look around the news services and on line
- If she was moved I don't see a news note about it. Sadly being dead
20 years she might not have made news though.
I recall the last time I saw Richard and all I could think was that he
had really never gotten over her death and sadly it put an end to a
really excellent composer.

I'm a big big fan too. I have ALL the Carpenter's albums, and their
TV movie-of-the-week The Karen Carpenter Story, and that tell-all book
someone wrote.

Their relationship always did seem a little odd.
Odd. He has their bodies exhumed and trucked over from Forest Lawn to
Thousand Oaks just so they can be closer to him. That's only 35 miles
apart (not very far by Los Angeles standards). How often does he
visit them?
You forget how lovely her voice was until you hear it again. I heard a lot of
christmas carols on the radio sung by her...and she did have a unique voice.

I've heard stuff over the years about Richard Carpenter--none of which
makes him likeable in the least. He comes off as arrogant, selfish
and clueless, and I've no doubt his attitude contributed to his
sister's illness.

"Why do dead bodies suddenly appear, everytime you are near? Just like
me they long to be close to you"
I find this very morbid and unbelievable that he wanted their corpses to
be closer to him. he's not even dead yet, or is he? I guess he is as a
public figure. Most people want to be buried near their loved ones, not
have them moved closer while one is still alive. What is he, some kind
of incestuous necropheliac?

I heard that it might be his way for giving LA the finger but I am not
sure. I also heard that Forest Lawn was given no notification that
Richard was exhuming and moving the bodies of Karen, her mother and
father.
It's raining in LA.
It's Monday.
Karen's six feet down.

So you must have seen "Superstar: the Karen Carpenter Story?"
It's not a very good version but if for those who haven't seen it
http://illegal-art.org/video/popups/superstar.html
http://www.angelfire.com/movies/oc/superstar.html
One of the more famous suppressed films of recent years is Superstar: The Karen Carpenter
Story, an early work by writer/director Todd Haynes (Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far from
Heaven). Filmed in 1987, the short film -- which relates the rise and fall of Karen
Carpenter with a cast of Barbie dolls -- barely got a year's worth of festival time in
1989 before the twin iron boots of A&M Records and Richard Carpenter came down on Haynes.
Seems the director hadn't cleared the rights to use the many Carpenters songs in the film.
Oops. Not only that, Superstar drew fire from sober-sided feminists who felt it
trivialized anorexia (and who blithely ignored the fact that a woman co-wrote and
co-produced it) and might've raised the ire of Mattel if it hadn't been yanked out of
circulation so fast that Mattel didn't even have time to complain about the use of its
dolls.
Threatened with a lawsuit from A&M and Richard Carpenter, Haynes countered with an offer
to show the film only at clinics and health classes, the profits going to an anorexia
research center founded in Karen's name. Richard didn't go for it. In April 1991, critic
Owen Gleiberman wrote an open letter in Entertainment Weekly asking the surviving
Carpenter sibling to let people see Haynes' film. Richard didn't go for that, either. Thus
Superstar became a legendary verboten film, notorious for being forbidden. For some reason
it continues to be shown in college courses, and it pops up at the occasional underground
festival, but fifteen years later more people have heard about it than actually viewed it.
So, officially nobody is supposed to see the film. Officially I haven't seen it, never
bought it, don't own it; that's my official story and I'm sticking to it. But who wants to
be official?
Please discuss..
Bob Crane's kids had him moved.. it's not unbelievable
Yeah, but she was such a Superstar, it didn't stop her from saying Goodbye
to Lunch...Love, I mean.
Seems like she was around Only Yesterday. It's Going to Take Some Time to
get over her being gone.
Just stuff I've heard about how he refused to allow her to release a
solo album and had it shelved for years, how he made negative comments
about her figure, etc. There's an article at
http://maski.org/manon/carpenters/magazines_001.htm that shows their
relationship in a rather strained light.
Yes, I'm a Carpenter fan. Well, a Karen fan, ever since I was wee.
Wrong! His wife Pat Crane (Sigrid Valdis) had him moved so they could
be buried togther. (She is still alive.)
>
>Wrong! His wife Pat Crane (Sigrid Valdis) had him moved so they could be

Well, Bob was such a faithful and loyal husband! ;-)
Your take on him may be true, AND he may have been 3-1/2 years older
than Karen, but Richard was still a sibling and more of a peer to her
than anything else. I know that children, and particularly siblings,
can be cruel, but the cruelty they cause in others is more of a
learning experience at the school of hard knocks, than anything else.
That's because the children all recognize each other as children, and
discount it accordingly. It has nowhere near the impact that
mistreatment by an adult, say a parent, has on a child. If, however,
there is a really messed up family dynamic, particularly in the
relationship with the mother (as is very often the case in anorexia),
and Richard's treatment of Karen, as a part of this dynamic, is added
into the mix, then you may be onto something. In any event, Richard
and Richard alone, could not be the sole or primary cause of Karen's
problems.
I challenge you to pun on Beechwood 45789.
"There's an itch in my brain (and I can't get at it)"
OK, but I think we'll have to leave the '8' (ate) out.

There are legitimate reasons to move someone to a different grave, but his
reasons just sound selfish.
If he doesn't want to drive all that way, he can always move closer.
Interesting info, there. And no, I don't think Richard was the alpha
cause of her problems. There were a lot of things there most likely
from childhood that the trappings of fame enhanced. But there's an
element of Richard being constantly aware that Karen gave the
Carpenter sound its complete identity, and he may have vented some
resentment on her over the years because of that. To her that may
have come off as more pressure. Who knows?

Put some money on it and I will. Why, any beech wood 4 $5789.
I tip my hat to you, Big J. Although the pun wasn't about Karen and
there is no dollar sign in the song title...now that the passive
aggressive criticism is out of the way, well done.

Perhaps! However, I wonder if FLHH is a tourist attraction. Therefore I can
understand why people wouldn't want their family to rest in it.

My chorus rehearses and performs in Liberty Hall, an auditorium in FLHH and
I'm out there about every 2 months... It's also very near my home, and I
drive by all the time.
It is not a tourist attraction. FL, by policy, will not tell you where
anyone is buried/entombed. You have to know when you arrive.
The cemetary is alway 'busy' - lots of family visiting, lots of services...
but I've never seen anything remotely resembling tourist activity.
They also have weddings, shows, church svc, etc... it's a lovely park, and
the facilities are beautiful... not at all creepy. )I get a big charge
outta saying "We've got a rehearsal at the graveyard this weekend!")
