From the Denver Post.
KBPI on-air personality "Willie B." has been charged with cruelty to animals
for directing a station intern to drop a chicken from an office building as the
announcer broadcast the chicken's reaction.
The injured chicken was rescued shortly after it was tossed out of the third
floor of KBPI's studios at 4695 S. Monaco Parkway. It allegedly had been
dropped from the second floor moments earlier.
The stunned and bruised animal was examined by veterinarians and has since
recovered from the Feb. 1 stunt, during which Willie B. allegedly polled
listeners about whether they thought the chicken would survive.
"We conducted a lengthy investigation, and based on the investigation we filed
the appropriate charge," Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter said Friday.
"There is no pyramid that entitles horses to be treated better than cats and
cats better than chickens."
Announcer Stephen Meade, 31, who uses the on-air name Willie B., is due in
court Aug. 1. If convicted of the class 1 misdemeanor, he faces up to 18 months
in jail and a $5,000 fine.
KBPI officials declined to comment Friday. Meade could not be reached for
comment.
According to the complaint filed by the Denver Dumb Friends League, Meade
allegedly encouraged listeners to bring small animals to the radio station to
be released across Interstate 25. Meade allegedly told listeners there would be
an early spring if the animals survived, but there would be six more weeks of
winter if they did not.
Lian Kian, communications manager for the Denver Dumb Friends League, said
shortly after the incident that Meade was asking listeners to bring more than
chickens to the station.
"He was asking that a chicken and other animals be brought down so they could
do their "gravity' and "speed' experiments," Kian said.
"The animals would be released across I-25 to see how far they could get before
being hit by a car."
No animals were ever released to cross the highway.
Kian said Friday that the incident reflected poorly on someone who has the
power to communicate with thousands over the radio.
"It is disappointing that someone who has the ability to influence listeners
encourages cruelty to animals and disregard for life," said Kian. "It is our
responsibility to give animals the best care possible and not subject them to
cruel and unkind acts." Kian applauded the filing of the charge.
"It helps the community understand that this type of conduct shouldn't be
tolerated and won't be tolerated," she said.

Am I the only one who was reminded of that WKRP episode with the turkey drop?

Nope! :)

But I'm wondering how the chicken was rescued on the 3rd floor, when it'd be
dropped from the 2nd floor moments earlier, according to the post. I guess
chicken *can* fly!

What's next from this dope? Asking listeners to bring a baby in to test
how hot water has to be before it scalds their flesh? Hey, isn't this
something else stupid we all need to know??

Wasn't that Arthur Carlson's line? : "As God as my witness, I thought turkey's

Actually, the first thing I thought of was that scene in PINK
FLAMINGOES...but that's just where my mind is.

classic episode.

That and "What does the yellow light mean?" are two of my fondest memories of
the seventies. Of course, I can't remember too much of the seventies.
