STAR....

Janis Gill claims the truth about her ex is very different from his Mr. Nice
Guy image.

Inside Nashville's most shocking divorce papers . . . I FLED IN TERROR FROM
RAGING VINCE GILL

SHOCKING secret divorce papers claim that Vince Gill -- country music's Mr.
Nice Guy -- was so nasty and abusive that his wife Janis was terrified of him.

STAR has learned that Janis Gill made the charges against the superstar singer
during their bitter court battle after 17 years of what seemed a fairy-tale
marriage. The warring couple -- who finally settled their divorce recently --
tried to keep the details of the messy marital split a secret.

Grammy-winner Gill's best-known hit I Still Believe In You was written in
loving tribute to Janis.

But in never-before-seen court papers obtained by STAR, she says he was far
different behind closed doors than his sweet-as-pie public image.

"Vince has an extremely bad temper and has been verbally abusive throughout our
marriage, screaming and yelling at me, calling me vile and abusive names,"
Janis charged in the court papers.

Vince and singer Amy Grant were soul mates not lovers, says the country
star's lawyer.

"He has also become enraged and thrown things around the house. I have been so
frightened of him when he had some of these outbursts that I have hidden myself
from him in fear."

She also accused Gill of trying to browbeat her into an unfair divorce
settlement early on.

During one meeting, she claims that Vince "lost control of his temper and
picked up a chair with the intention of throwing it out the window of my home.

"He has left abusive messages on my answering machine, and he screamed
obscenities at me."

Gill, 42, and Janis, 45 -- a member of the singing group Sweethearts of the
Rodeo -- married in 1980 after meeting on tour. The couple have a 17-year-old
daughter Jenny.

They separated quietly in April 1997. Just over a year later, Janis fired the
first salvo in the bitter battle over Gill's $22 million fortune.

At one point, Gill's relationship with singer Amy Grant became an issue in the
proceedings.

Gill's lawyer Lou Conner said he believed the other side was using Vince's
friendship with Amy Grant as a "hammer" to make accusations that the two were
having an affair during Gill's marriage. Janis planned to produce letters
allegedly written between Amy and Vince that detailed their feelings toward
each other.

But Conner said Vince and Amy were simply "soul mates" -- and that both were
prepared to testify under oath that they never had sex.

Grant -- who recently separated from her husband, Nashville entertainer Gary
Chapman -- hired her own lawyer for the case, and never gave a deposition.

Gill fought back with his own litany of complaints against the wife who
inspired some of country's most tender love songs.

"She has neither been supportive of my career nor in our personal life where
for years she has nagged me incessantly and has been abusive and vindictive
toward me, cursed me repeatedly during the course of our marriage and falsely
accused me of a variety of things."

Gill also claimed that in the year before filing the divorce, Janis emptied
$70,000 a month out of their joint bank account; bought a $700,000 house for
herself; spent $500,000 on a horse barn; and another $500,000 on a dress shop
she opened with her sister.

They settled out of court last December. Janis pocketed more than $9 million --
and that sum could reach $15 million as she collects 38 percent of all
songwriting royalties Gill receives for songs he wrote during their marriage.

She walked away with $6 million in cash, 150 acres of farmland valued at $1.5
million and her $700,000 house. She also kept the barn she built, the dress
shop and a Lexus car valued at $35,000. It's one of the highest divorce
settlements ever in Nashville.

Both initially wanted sole custody of Jenny, but agreed to a joint deal.

Thanks, Billie. I'm a Vince Gill fan. I had no idea things got so nasty. You
don't know who to believe. There's probably some truth in what both Vince and
Janis alleged against each other.

Well, anyway it's over. Sounds like Janis got a very fair settlement. I hope
they can both get on with their lives and at least be civil to each other for
their daughter's sake.

I'm looking forward to hearing what (mslinda) Linda C. has to say about this.
She's got the inside track into the country music world.

Come on, Linda. Tell us the true story. Even though I'm a Vince Gill fan,
I've known too many men who live their lives as devils at home and behaved like
angels in public. I can believe Vince is an SOB at times. I just hope he's
not a complete phoney when he acts like a nice guy.

Alas, I have no inside dirt on the divorce, but I did observe Vince
hitting on other women at a party while Janis was on the road back in
the 80s. I suspect that she finally got tired of his fooling around but
waited until her daughter was nearly grown before breaking it off .

Now you've done it, Billie. All of Vince's deluded little groupies will
crawl out of the woodwork to defend him and trash Janis. Reading his AOL
board the day the divorce was announced was most amusing if you enjoy
the ravings of women who've obviously spent *way* too many years
drooling over Vince and now think their chance has come.

I was around Janis and her sister quite a bit back in the 80s and found
both of them to be perfectly sweet and charming. If Janis has been
bitchy recently, it's probably because she finally got fed up with his
fooling around.

Vince is a flirt, but that is the extent of it. Ms. Linda is the only one I
have ever heard of accusing him of "hitting on other women". From what I have
heard from those who actually know the couple- and have known them for years
and years, Janis is the one with the nasty temper
and the one who was quick to find someone new so quickly after filing for
divorce.

Vince didn't have to find anyone new after the divorce was filed. He's had
Amy Grant around for years. Say their just best friends, if you want. It's
possible, I know, because my best friend is of the opposite gender. There
is no one I trust more and share more with intellectually and emotionally.
But, we don't make lovey-dovey eyes at each other. That's because we are
friends ONLY.

If I had a husband who had promised before God to "love, honor and
cherish" and humiliated me by "flirting" with other women in public, I'd
be pissed as hell and refuse to put up with it.

Ms. Linda is the only one I
> have ever heard of accusing him of "hitting on other women".

You, of course, know *everybody.* I'm not "accusing" - I'm reporting
what I saw with my own eyes at a party in SoCal.

17 years with a womanizing husband will give anyone a bad temper. If
she's found herself a good guy who doesn't hit on other women and call
it "flirting," more power to her. She deserves it.

And will you over aged horny Vince groupies quit wasting my time with
e-mail? Jeez, you're grown women who sound like13-year-old Ricky Martin
fans. If gossip bothers you so much, why are you here?

I just have to stick up for Linda here. This flame war is getting out of
control.

Look ladies, this is a *gossip* website. That means: good and/or bad.
Just take it in, and if you don't like what is being said, *ignore*. Linda
is a reputable writer who has a lot of ties in the industry. She knows the
score and has no axe to grind. Here on agc we are lucky to have her in our
midst to give up funny and quirky gossip. So just leave her alone and leave
the subject be.

You know, most people have a public image (myself included) and a private
image, and they rarely intersect. So give it the benefit of the doubt.

personal attacks on we people who happen to think Vince Gill is a good

vicious and untrue remarks about us...not Vince. She can say all she
wants about Vince, the divorce and how much he flirts....we can
careless!! But she should be more tactful when addressing us...the
fans...the people who read this. We don't know MsLinda, nor do we want

statements as "Over Aged and Horny". Last I checked, 33 years old was

Tazoo,

I think Linda started the "flame war" by attacking ALL of Vince's fans by
calling us "over aged horny Vince groupies" (her words exactly). Now, just to
let everyone know, we ALL heard Vince's voice and were drawn to that LONG before
we knew ANYTHING about him. I even SAW Vince on TV back in 1986 or 1987, but
didn't really pay much attention to him because he didn't have any songs that
really caught my attention. Then he came out with "When I Call Your Name,"
which I heard on the radio (I didn't and still don't have any access to country
music videos on TV), and that's how I became a fan. It had absolutely NOTHING
to do with his looks.

As for his "high little voice," (Linda's words again) if his voice is so
"little" then WHY does everyone in the music business want his voice on their
albums???!!! Even Barbara Streisand was impressed enough with his "high little
voice" that she wanted him to do a duet with her on her new album that will be
coming out later this year!

Witnessing Vince hitting on women back
in the 80's (excuse me if I point out that
that is over 20 years ago) hardly makes
Vince a womanizer today. Vince has
had his "nice guy" image for years, and
you knw as well as anyone that the
scandal sheets would jump on it like
a PIT BULL if there was ANY hint of
Vince being a abuser or womanizer!
Vince is the first one to admit he has
a temper, but it is usually on the golf
course that he loses it. And he has
a smart mouth on him and takes no
crap from people. Sounds like a well
rounded individual to me.

Since you like gossip, it is only fitting
to mention that all the GOSSIP I hear
in Nashville (circa 1999) is that Janis
was a whiny, materialistic bitch, who
was wanted Vince to SPEND some of
that money! And with all the "gossip"
about Vince and Amy going around, it
seems weird that while they were still
seperated, Janis goes on national tv
and talks about her new boyfriend.

Based on vicious remarks you are
making about Vince....I get the feeling
that your dislike for him is more
personal.......maybe you were pissed
cause he didn't hit on you!!!

Unfortunately, this troll seems to change its DN handle every day, so
that won't do much good.

The hell it isn't. This is a *gossip* group. If that bothers you, get
the hell out. We're here to gossip and there's *nothing* you can do
about it.

It's obvious these sad little fans have nothing better to do than do DJ
searches for their idol's name and harrass anyone who dares to disagree
with their candy-coated visions. Honestly, I feel sorry for Vince having
these women slavering over him. They sound as bad as the cult nuts we've
had inflicted on us in the past.

This is Usenet - I'll "judge" anyone or anything I please and so will
the rest of the group. I think it's pretty sad that you've invested so
much of your self-worth in making a fool of yourself defending a celebrity.

For all you AOLers in the group, check out Vince's AOL board for a good

Um, if I can get a word in here. Actually, I DO know Vince. And, I've met
Janis on quite a few occasions. I've never seen him be anything but friendly
to anyone of either sex. And I don't mean overly friendly, either, even though
I've seen a lot of women literally throw themselves at him in public. He is
one of the few celebrities in Nashville or Hollywood who gives back to his
fans, as well as to worthwhile charities who can benefit from his name and
talent.

Oh, BTW, I've never been referred to as a groupie in my life. I just happen to
live and work around a lot of these people. And, Vince Gill is one of the
nicest people in this business.

Ms. Linda,
So since you witnessed some things personally, how about giving us a date
rather than about "at a party in So. Ca. in the 80's". Who was at the party and
why was Vince there? He wasn't exactly a household name back then.

The location was the Country Club in Reseda and the occasion was a party
upstairs following a show by Roseanne Cash. Since I've been to hundreds
of these things and didn't consider it noteworthy enough to mark down
in my diary, I don't recall the date.
BTW, if you Vince vigilantes plan on harassing every Usenet poster who
fails to worship at his shrine, you'd better quit your jobs right now,
because you're going to be *very* busy.

That's a pretty stupid question to ask on this NG isn't it? Especially
since you already *know* that I've worked for showbiz magazines for over
20 years. And it's obvious you trailed me over here from rmcw in the
hopes of finding other Vince worshippers that you could induce to harass
me.
Besides the obvious stupidity of your question, do you know how silly
and childish you sound telling me, of all people, to "Get a life?" You
used to be a pretty average-quality poster on rmcw, but your obsession
with Vince seems to have pushed you over the edge. Ricky Martin fans
sound mature and level-headed compared to the Vince vigilantes that have
crawled in here for the sole purpose of harassing me.
I'll *never* understand how such a dull, white-bread singer can inspire
such lust and passion as this in middle-aged housewives.

Last time I looked at who was surrounding

You know absolutely nothing about Linda, obviously. Don't you feel rather
ridiculous crawling over to our newsgroup, where she is a long-time poster
who is well respected by most for her contributions to this group, and
actually thinking you could possibly influence anyone here negatively
about her? You, a stranger who has never contributed anything to our
group? Well your words are only amusing us, at your expense. We love to
laugh at clueless trolls like yourself.

Linda is an intelligent woman who has been a journalist for a long time.
The insights and observations that she shares with us are much
appreciated. Slams against her by nobodies who have never posted her
before have no effect on our opinion of her. They just make you guys look
really lame.

Isn't it amusing how the people who've actually met Vince tell one story
and the ones who sit home fantasizing about him tell another?

Where have I claimed to still be "in the country music biz" at the
moment? While I *did* write for Country Weekly since Country Fever, my
interests and expertise cover much more than just country music. I've
interviewed TV stars, movie stars, executives, songwriters and many more
in my long and varied career. Maybe I'll do more with country music if
it gets interesting again.

where he met Janice.. Janice and her sister lived close to me, though we went

married. Vince also never stopped cheating on her for one second. I still

Since you know Janis so well, you might want to spell her name correctly. You
also would know that Vince and Janis met in Jan. of 1977, but she did not go
out with him until late 1979 or early 1980(after he joined Pure Prairre
League). They got married in April of 1980, and he was busy touring with PPL.
But since you Janis and Kristine lived near you, I'm sure you knew all this.

Never said I new her well. Just knew her and her sister...so I misspelled her
name.. I could careless. Yes, I KNOW when they got married. Several of my
friends were at the wedding. It was the PPL that we saw perform that evening.

I thought the Bon Jovi fans were bad. Sheesh, Vince Gill should make sure he's

any example of what's he's got buying his records.

Lucky them. Believe me, watching Vince on the make is NOT a pretty sight. I

Now, I can't speak for others but this thread has made me move from a position
of "I could care *LESS* what happened during Vince & Janis' divorce". . .to one
of wanting to take sides with JANIS.

Yeesh...how Janis could have ever stood all this "fan" attention to her hubby
for all those years -- I'll never know. She's a better woman than me.

Whew. Before I really read this, I thought I was going to have to be
offended. However, while I worship the man, I am not prepared to issue a
definite edict one way or the other about his preferences.

I respectfully submit the "colon" people.

there's at least one woman who resisted (did you see Harpsgrl's story
about that yet?) ;)
