Marie Osmond's Son Commits Suicide

By Stephen M. Silverman and Mike Fleeman

Update Saturday February 27, 2010 02:30 PM EST
Originally posted Saturday February 27, 2010 02:00 PM EST

Marie Osmond's teenaged son, Michael Blosil, has killed himself by
leaping to his death around 9 p.m. Friday in Los Angeles, reports
Entertainment Tonight, which quotes Marie's brother, Donny Osmond, as
saying, "Please pray for my sister and her family."

Through her rep, Marie Osmond released a statement Saturday. It says,
“My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss
of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during
this difficult time.”

According to ET, Michael left a note explaining he intended to end his
life after a lengthy battle with severe depression that left him, he
said, feeling as if he had no friends and could never fit in.

In 2007, Michael, then 16, entered a rehab facility. His mother said
at the time, "My son Michael is an amazing young man, shown through
his courage in facing his issues. As his mother, I couldn’t be more
proud of him."

The reason for the visit to rehab was never disclosed. Michael is one
of eight children Osmond has raised with ex-husband Brian Blosil.

By March 2009, Marie told PEOPLE that Michael seemed to be turning his
life around. He was finishing up his last year of high school while
living with his mom in Las Vegas, where she and Donny headline a show.

"I couldn't be more proud of him," Marie said at the time. "He's got a
3.9 GPA in high school. He's looking at scholarships to some wonderful
colleges."

A rep for Donny and Marie Osmond confirmed to PEOPLE that the show at
the Flamingo Hotel was canceled Saturday night. It is being determined
how long the hiatus will remain in effect.

Marie Osmond, one of nine Utah-bred Osmond siblings, began performing
with her brothers at age 3. She has been outspoken about the trials of
her own life in the spotlight.

In her 2001 memoir Behind the Smile, she detailed her battle with
postpartum depression following the birth of her son Matthew. She also
revealed that she had been sexually abused as a child.

She did not identify her abusers but said they were not family
members.

In 2006, Marie's rep denied that the singer had tried to commit
suicide, attributing reports about Osmond to the postpartum she
suffered.

Yes, let's. Let's pray for the hypocritical "religious" parents who
wear their religion on their sleeve , forcing it onto their children,
and raising them in the same kind of cattle herd they were
raised in themselves. How can a kid stay sane, when Mom's
a drama queen whose life is even worse than publicly revealed?

It's just a damned good thing the Duggars weren't given singing
lessons, or we'd have two disgusting families preaching to us.

Wow, so sensitive aren't you?

How are the Osmonds hypocritical? One teenage suicide in a family of
hundreds isn't uncommon at all. It's not about their parenting skills
or their religion.

IIRC Marie has a gay daughter and has fully accepted her, so I doubt
it was anything about being gay. He was in a depression like a lot of
teenagers.

Agreed.

Remember, Michael's sister is a lesbian.....but it's much harder for a
Mormon man to be gay.

My first thought, too. And if not gay, then something else so "shameful"
to the fucked up Mormons that he couldn't bear to be himself.

And her fucked up BS about "I couldn't be more proud of him. He's got a

3.9 GPA in high school."

How about "I couldn't be more proud of him. He's honest, giving,
caring,..."

Marie had no choice but to publicly accept her daughter, because
her daughter was publicly "out". It would have been a PR disaster
for Marie to denounce her daughter.

I do feel sorry for the family, but you have to live around here,
to understand how pervasive their holier-than-thou PR is.

She was probably trying to encourage him. Maybe getting those grades
were a big deal for him and she knew he'd like hearing about her
pride.

It's a wee bit odd that so many of you are willing to throw her into
the "all Mormons are evil" category, when in reality she's come out
FOR gay marriage. She doesn't seem like some hardcore fundamentalist
to me. She's a Mom who now has lost a son and who will feel that loss
forever. It's very sad.

I understand what you were saying, it's true some gay teenagers do
commit suicide. Who knows if he was gay or not, I was just finding it
odd that everyone wants to assume his Mom wouldn't be supportive of
him either way. I don't follow Marie's career, but I've never heard
her say or do anything but be supportive of her kids, gay or straight.

=========
I haven't read here that anyone thinks his mom wasn't supportive of him. The
point I'm hearing made is that he may have felt his life unbearable due to
irreconcilable gay v. LDS values.

And Kris lives with LDS, and the Osmond legacy and influence combined with
all the religiousity offends her. Marie IS big in the LDS community. Maybe
Kris's right that it all contributed to this poor young man's final
decision. Who knows?

I rather like Marie, but her life has not been lived according to LDS
standards, and yet she hasn't been excommunicated like many, many others
have. Kris may have a point.

No she didn't. You might want to stretch her statement into
support for marriage, but she's clearly talked locally about
"civil rights".

Of course it's sad. Who said it wasn't?

But she's a product of the environment, and her son was a product
of that environment too....with more tension and odd events
surrounding the family, than are commonly known.

Is everyone forgetting peer pressure? Morman kids sre not only raised
by conservatve families, but live almost exclusively in Mormon
environments attending from K-1 2 and sometimes later Mormon schools.
They socialize in tightly controlled groups. There is a great deal of
uniformity in a Mormon community and of course enormous pressure to obey
and fit in. It's not hard to imagine a gay kid being tornented by his
peers and himself. Kids need friends and acceptance, and as everyone
knows, there is a tragically high teenage suicides---many of which are
commited by "unpopular" kids.

More about Michael's problems from 2007 articles:

http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20170842,00.html

Especially difficult have been Michael's troubles, which Donny says
are not new. "They have been an ongoing problem. Marie has been
dealing with this for a very long time. Unfortunately, he got into the
wrong crowd." Hatch describes Michael—one of five children Marie
adopted with Blosil (she also has three biological children)—as "a
very quiet kid" who played drums on his mom's Christmas concert tour
last year. "When her kids are hurting," says Hatch, "there's nobody
that hurts more than her."

http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/DancingStars/story?id=3869617&page=1

The statement was first reported by TV show "Entertainment Tonight."
Osmond also talked about her son's entry into rehab on Wednesday's
"Larry King Live."

"He's dealing with a lot. He's one of my kids. He's dealing with
adoption issues. All kinds of things right now," she said. "A lot of
people in this country, a lot of people in the world are dealing with
these kinds of issues, and the Osmond family, just because we are a
close family, doesn't mean we're exempt from these issues."

You're just jellus because someone found Marie Osmond attractive enough
to have sex with her and make a baby, while you're still 45 years old,
weigh 300lbs, don't have a man, and are childless.

Just when I think your fat, ignorant, dimpled ass could not possibly
sink any lower, you manage to find new depths to plumb. You are an
abomination of a human being. I'd tell you to go hang yourself from a
tree, but there's no oak or redwood alive that could support your weight.

If you were a Dad and not some rump ranger you would know what Marie
said was kind and supportive. In other words despite his depression he
still overcame part of it to do well in school. Get out of your homo
bubble for a change and learn a little thing called empathy. You
people are just so despicable.

Yes because no matter how much you dress it up homosexuality is still
seen by some as a disgusting lifestyle. Many gays are self loathing
human beings who can't accept their oddity themselves, let alone what
other normal people think of them. The few gay people I know are not
comfortable in their own skin. Perhaps it's because their family
doesn't openly accept them like they might their children who are
normal, I don't know. I'm not a shrink. But if her son was gay, she
seems to be the type of person that would love him no matter what.

You're being too kind, someone once posted a picture of Kris in a pink
balloon dress and it looked to me like she was pushing 400 lbs. I
don't think there is a more snarky poster than Kris Baker. Fat people
are generally mean spirited because they've been so ridiculed in life,
it's there only way to fight back. For years she has railed against
Mormons yet continues to live in the middle of all of them. If I
hated a people that much, I'd move.
