US Coast Guard investigators have no plans to travel to Mexico to
follow-up on reports Olivia Newton-John's missing boyfriend, Patrick
McDermott, was hiding out there.
The Coast Guard, which is responsible for investigating McDermott's
disappearance, described the sightings as "hearsay" and the latest in a
long list of supposed eyewitness accounts from around the world.
Investigators have received reports of McDermott living in numerous
countries since his disappearance from a fishing boat off the coast of
California almost a year ago.
"You name it, he's probably been sighted there," Coast Guard Petty
Officer Prentice Danner told AAP.
How about Europe, Africa or even Australia?
"We have had a pretty steady flow of leads from all over the world,"
Danner replied, declining to name specific countries.
"He's been sighted everywhere in the world, pretty much."
When news broke in August McDermott was missing, it generated worldwide
media attention because of his nine-year romantic relationship with
Australian songstress Newton-John.
McDermott, 49, an American cameraman based in Los Angeles, met
Newton-John while shooting a commercial, sparking the relationship.
The Coast Guard, despite the latest reports of McDermott living in
Mexico, said it did not have any "strong leads" about McDermott's
whereabouts or whether he was dead or alive.
"He's still a missing person," Danner said. "We have no strong leads.
They are all just hearsay at the moment. The stuff that's come out
about Mexico, no-one has come to us about that. It seems like people
have gone straight to the media with it."
When asked if Coast Guard investigators would go to Mexico to check the
sightings, Danner replied: "Not at current."
The witnesses would have to contact the Coast Guard, he said.
"The leads never came in to us," he said. "It's still kind of hearsay
right now. If they come into us, we would definitely follow them up."
If the reports did appear accurate, the Coast Guard would have to ask
the Mexican government for help to investigate on Mexican soil.
"We have to work with the Mexican authorities on that," Danner said.
McDermott's disappearance has baffled investigators because eyewitness
accounts vary.
McDermott did board the boat Freedom from a wharf at San Pedro, south
of Los Angeles, on June 30 with 22 other anglers for an overnight
fishing expedition.
When the boat returned to San Pedro on July 1 some witnesses said they
saw McDermott walk off the boat.
A fisherman on the boat, however, told a US TV network McDermott went
missing while the Freedom was still out at sea and the boat's crew
searched for him before it docked.
Adding to the mystery, McDermott's bum bag with his passport, driver's
licence and a wallet containing coins was left on board.
McDermott was also in financial difficulty and behind on child support
payments for his son from a former marriage when he went missing,
raising suspicion he may have committed suicide by jumping off the boat
or he planned his disappearance and was alive and in hiding.
What's interesting is that the Aussie newspaper not only followed
him to a hotel - but they have an interview with a cook (IIRC) on the
boat who said the boat made an unscheduled and unusual stop
near the place where the Aussie journalist says he saw McDermott.
He didn't get a pic of McDermott, but someone posted a link to the
story.
Near Cabo - makes me want to go and lie on the sand, see if I can spot
him and report back. ;)
A.
Oh, good idea. I'll meet you there. Umm, yes, that's the ticket.

It's also interesting that the two people who stalked Newton-John
eventually went on to kill other people, in both cases members of their
own families. Cmelak, Anderson, and anyone foolish enough to associate
witht the Hoodoo Troll and Stalker (currently posting to alt.true.crime
as Shrike) take note.

Since the Hoo...@spamcop.net Troll and Stalker (Karen Anderson and
William Bill Cmelak) thought that it would be clever to spoof (steal
and forge) my better known email addresses in order to hassle a number
of folks, it seems only fair to adopt a series of alternative email
addresses as a tribute to these two fine citizens.
