Jane, who has an upcoming documentary about her life on HBO called Jane Fonda in
Five Acts, says she knows she looks good, but you can thank her surgeon for
that. But Jane says she wishes she could have aged the natural way.
“On one level, I hate the fact that I’ve had the need to alter myself physically
to feel that I’m OK. I wish I wasn’t like that. I love older faces. I love
lived-in faces. I loved Vanessa Redgrave’s face. I wish I was braver. But I am
what I am.”
Vanessa Redgrave is 81, and I’m hoping they’re friends, otherwise I could see
that compliment being received as a backhanded one. “I wish I, Vanessa Redgrave,
of the Redgrave family of esteemed actors, was brave enough to do a Netflix
sitcom about dildo-peddlers. Alas, my agent hasn’t presented one to me yet.”
Jane adds that it’s not just plastic surgery that has helped her look young. She
says she does pilates, and that she always stands up straight because “Your age
is less chronological and more attitudinal.” I’m going to live in that head
space the next time some teenage employee offers me a wrinkle cream sample at
Sephora. I’m sorry, but I can’t hear you, shady cream giver. Never mind that I
have the hunched-over posture of a senior citizen, I believe I’m standing with
the attitude of someone in their 20s, and that’s all that matters.
