ER doc Ming-Na Wen has the perfect prescription for keeping herself and her
husband faithful -- a divorce deal that allows either one to untie the marital
knot if the other strays.
"My husband and I have made a pact," says Wen, who plays Dr. Deb Chen on the
hit NBC series and is married to actor/writer Eric Michael Zee.
"If either of us slips and has an affair, and the other person finds out, that
would be it for both of us.
"For us, that is not acceptable -- we would get a divorce. It's that strong of
an understanding that makes us make the right choices."
Wen experienced the pain of a failed marriage to playwright Kirk Aanes. She
filed for divorce in October 1993, barely 3 1/2 years after their lavish
wedding.
"I was young and in love," Wen, 31, admits. "I discovered too late that because
we were both in show business, there was this constant competition.
"Every time I got a job, I had to console him, even though I wanted to
celebrate."
But the Chinese-born actress is not leaving anything to chance with Zee, 33,
whom she met shortly before splitting with Aanes.
As it turns out, Zee, who had the recurring role of Dr. Peter Chow on Dr.
Quinn: Medicine Woman, was the first Asian man she's had a serious relationship
with.
"I was only 4 years old when my family left Hong Kong and came to New York,"
she says. "We moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. -- white suburbia -- four years later,
and it was a traumatic experience for me. I was at that stage when you're
embarrassed by your parents and your roots."
But now, like her character Dr. Chen -- a competitive third-year resident who
frequently butts heads with supervisors -- Wen is comfortable with who she is.
The couple has their mutual acting teacher to thank for hooking them up.
Wen had mentioned to her teacher that she needed a ride to the 1993 screening
of her movie The Joy Luck Club in L.A. -- and he sent Zee.
"We hit it off right away," Wen gushes.
"On our first date, we parked by the beach at Malibu.
"Eric took out two coolers and a blanket. Then we went on the beach and he
played a tape of love songs and pulled out a seven-course meal that he had
made.
"Our second date was like Cupid shooting arrows."
Wen moved to L.A. to be closer to Zee and they eloped to Hawaii two years
later.
Now, she's determined to keep the commitment rock solid.
"We've made a very strong vow," she says. " Our priority is with each other. It
helps when you really draw boundaries about what is acceptable and what isn't."
Wen knows that actors are at particular risk of extramarital sexual intimacy.
"The temptation is really strong," says Wen. "You meet these talented,
beautiful people and work in really close environments.
"But as long as you stay true to yourself and don't want to hurt the person you
love and want to commit to, you can be strong."

I thought the same thing, but then this is Hollywood we're talking about.
