IF you thought Elvis Presley was the only cultural icon worthy of having his
portrait painted on black velvet, you underestimated Monica Lewinsky. An
extensive search by artnet.com for Monica-iana on Internet auction sites has
turned up some incredible objets d'intern. eBay alone had over 180 Portly
Pepperpot mementos for sale, including the 18" x 24" velvet portrait by famed
Tijuana brushman Jorge Terrones. The item was pulled after two weeks when no
one bid above the starting price of $50. A pastel portrait of the world's most
dedicated pizza-delivery girl went for $4.01 after furious bidding. Other
tchotchkes included a "Head Intern" ceramic doll of Monica complete with
bobbing noggin which went for $36.01. For those who like their pepperpots extra
peppery, a bottle of "Monica Lewinsky's Down on Your Knees HOT Sauce" is still
listed on Yahoo! Auctions at a starting price of $8. The inevitable Russian
nesting dolls of all the president's women started at $40 but found no takers.
Signed copies of "Monica: My Story" were selling as high as $182.50 and Beverly
Hills High year books were also a hot commodity. One joker listed "Monica
Lewinsky's sense of dignity" for sale on eBay. The starting price was 1 cent,
but as soon as the auction began, the description box read, "Oops! Sold!"

Quick, someone - Call the committee in charge of setting up the Clinton Library in
Little Rock... A velvet portrait of Monica certainly would deserve a place of honor
- perhaps right next to the "growing nose wristwatch".

But it was sold shortly after that as part of a package deal of several
paintings of cultural icons (or at least flash in the pans) on black
velvet to someone I know very well. It's hanging at her husband's office
where people are getting a big kick out of it.
