Celebrities Among Victims of Tsunami
Tuesday December 28, 2004

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - A German statesman, a Czech supermodel and a
Swedish Olympic ski champion were among the vacationers whose search
for peace and sun in tropical southern Asia was shattered by the
tsunamis that spared neither rich nor poor.

Petra Nemcova - who appeared on the cover of 2003 Sports Illustrated
swimsuit issue - was carried away with her boyfriend, the fashion
photographer Simon Atlee, after a huge wave plowed into southern
Thailand on Sunday.

Nemcova's New York spokesman, Rob Shuter, said the model and her
boyfriend had been vacationing in the resort of Phuket when waves
overwhelmed their beach hut.

Nemcova, 25, clung to a tree for eight hours as the water swirled
around her. She was recovering in a Thai hospital from broken bones,
possibly including a broken pelvis, and unspecified internal injuries.

Atlee, 33, was swallowed by the raging waters and was still missing
Tuesday.

``I've spoken to Petra several times and she's in pretty bad shape,''
Shuter said. ``She's on pain medication. She probably doesn't realize
yet the magnitude of the disaster.''

Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was on holiday in Sri Lanka's
pristine south - one of the areas most devastated by tsunamis.

Kohl and his entourage were evacuated Tuesday from a hotel by the Sri
Lankan air force.

``The helicopter went and we managed to bring him back with six
others,'' Commander Air Marshal Donald Perera told The Associated
Press.

Swedish skiing great Ingemar Stenmark was sunbathing in Thailand when
he saw an immense wave roaring to shore. He ran for his life.

Stenmark - who won two gold medals at the 1980 Olympics and '86 World
Cup races - was with friends in Khok Kloi, about 30 miles from Phuket.

``The water from the first wave disappeared, but then it came back
with terrifying speed,'' Stenmark told Swedish media. He and his
girlfriend were not injured.

Another athlete wasn't so lucky. Troy Broadbridge, an Australian Rules
rugby player, was on his honeymoon in Phuket when he and his bride
were swamped as they strolled along a beach. Trisha Broadbridge was
safe, but he was still missing Tuesday.

Several Italian soccer players - including AC Milan striker Filippo
Inzaghi, Milan captain Paolo Maldini, and Juventus defender Gianluca
Zambrotta - were caught in the maelstrom in the Maldives but were
unhurt.

Thailand's royal family also were among the grieving. The
Thai-American grandson of King Bhumipol Adulyadej, Poom Jensen, 21,
was reportedly jet skiing when the tidal wave struck Phuket. His body
was found later.

Hollywood actor-director Richard Attenborough's family also suffered
tragedy. His granddaughter, Lucy, 14, perished and his daughter, Jane,
and her mother-in-law are missing in Phuket. Another granddaughter,
Alice, 17, was being treated in a hospital.

Attenborough's directorial credits include ``Cry Freedom,''
``Chaplin'' and the Oscar-winning ``Gandhi.'' He has appeared in
scores of films including ``The Great Escape,'' ``Elizabeth'' and
``Jurassic Park.''

On Thailand's Phi Phi island, where ``The Beach'' starring Leonardo
DiCaprio was filmed, 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to
sea, and resort officials said many foreign tourists were among the
missing.

Designer Nate Berkus, a regular contributor on ``The Oprah Winfrey
Show,'' was carried away with a friend by a tsunami after it ripped
off the roof of their hut in Sri Lanka.

They briefly clung to a telephone poll, but a second wave ripped them
away. Berkus climbed to safety on the roof of a submerged home - but
his friend disappeared into the raging sea.

With 60,000 people killed, anyone a little annoyed that the news has been
incessantly talking about these three "celebrity" (and I use the term
loosely) survivors?

The other thing I find annoying is that there were 60,000+ killed but to
bring it close to home, they keep showing some blond haired 3 year old kid
survivor with scratches all over his face (when 99% of the people killed or
surviving were brown). I usually don't care about these things, but it just
kind of struck me as odd this time. Why should people care about this one
kid? The media kind of shows this in a way to say "see- isn't it sad? This
poor cute blonde kid." As if it wouldn't REALLY be sad unless there was a
blonde kid in the picture.

Any thoughts?

I'm pissed off that because the USA has the shits with Burma (Myanmar) no
mention has been made. They are people too, they can't help it if there is
a military ruler presiding over them.

We are waiting for news of friends and business associates in Myanmar.

Sadly Australia is the 51st state of the USA and we use their newsfeeds and
parrot their policies.

Meanwhile terrorists continue to blow shit up, I wonder when the human race
will finish itself off?

I remember Jimmy Carter talking about this -- how when it's
starving kids in Africa or something exactly like we are
seeing now, it isn't quite the same as seeing kids from
Western countries. He was shocked at himself for this, but
freely admitted it.

In looking atthe various news sites, the US News reports on
dead Americans and people Americans will recognize, the
Btits do the same with their subjects, France is keeping
count of their people (and focusing on one French-run resort
in Thailand), etc.

If a bus load of Sri Lankan tourists fell off the edge of
the Grand Canyon, I wonder how it would be reported? I
think the first question US people would ask is -- "Was the
driver American?"

news.google.com uses 4500 newsfeeds from all over
the world, with all possible political slants. You should be able to
find plenty of news there.

Know the name of any journals, newspapers,
websites, periodicals of any kind in Myanmar? Look them up online.

The information is there if you look for it instead
of finding another conspiracy to whine about.

According to some friends of my aunt who do missionary work over there,
there's news to be gathered in Burma, Chris, but the military is keeping the
foreign press from getting the news and keeping the domestic press from
releasing it. It's basically at a standstill, in other words.

Below is what Beryl, my aunt's missionary friend from England who's going
back to Thailand on January 11th (to the Karenni Camps up in the mountains,
not to the coast in Phuket, which was hit) said in an email this week. It's
not a conspiracy that's made up that people are whining about. REAL people
who *work over there* can't get the information they need about Burma
because it's not being released. If the military junta is keeping it from
being released, that means it's not released on paper, on television, on
radio, *OR* on the web. ALL media outlets, in other words. The information
is tied up and can't just "Be Googled". You can't Google the news if it
hasn't even BEEN DISTRIBUTED via the proper outlets.

"However large areas of the coast of Burma to the west of Thailand where
there are many other oppressed ethnic minority people (the Mon people) are
bound to have been hit - and we are awaiting reports from there.
Unfortunately although there is lots of news from Thailand, India, Sri
Lanka and Indonesia, there is nothing getting out about Burma, since the
military junta there do not allow journalists or TV companies into their
country."

Thank you very much for that information.

My dads friend who is Burmese has been trying to phone there, but I would
imagine their infrastructure is smashed up like everyone elses is...

It's very frustrating to not know anything.

Yeah, that's what Beryl said in various different statements she made in her

Perhaps they were getting hate lessons from the European press. Ground Zero

Bullshit. One constant complaint is that Americans don't know anything
outside their border. If we're to believe this, then how the hell would a
bunch of rednecks in Oklahoma know that there are muslims in Sri Lanka? This
tragedy does, however, demonstrate the remarkable insanity contained in the

Having known various people who've lived in Oklahoma for decades on end, I
think it depends on the person, obviously, but what I've noticed is that
some of them don't like to hear other's "chapters and tales of pain" and
their reasoning is because they've got a staunch survivor's mentality. They
have *HAD* to after what occurred so senselessly, so haphazardly and so
hatefully at the hands of Timothy McVeigh and Company.

That sometimes come across as hatred or a bold sense of impatience for the
sorrow and grief process of others, when in fact it's just a sense that to a
degree their sorrow has been overlooked in the wake of other people's
catastrophes and misfortunes. NONE of the people I know from down there in
OK, in other words, can stand "Poor Me" types of situations and don't have
much patience to share or *spread* the grief around, unfortunately.

While I don't think it's right to centralize (or perhaps personalize is a
better word?) the grief to just their own locale, I can relate to how
they're angry and are still dealing with their *own* adjustment to a
terrorizing situation that has been so very hard to register and eventually
learn to live down.

It's a shady line between what seems like ignorance and what is really a
case of "Hey, Asshole,What about me? I've had my town blown up and our
locals here were murdered, Hellllllloooo!", in other words.

Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between what's wickedly expressed
out of sheer ignorance and what's just a person who's angry because they
feel like *THEIR* catastrophe and grief has been lost or *MINIMIZED* in the
shuffle of other widespread, caustic, and senseless acts of Anti-American
evil.

Just a thought, of course...

A lot of die hard Bible beaters who do not just dwell in the spirit, but
instead live, eat drink, breath and preach it 24/7 are the last people to
view foreign born others in a single-minded and *independently thinking* way
and they want for you to be tolerant or to be abhorrent of certain foreign
born peoples as a *group* instead.

(It's this odd form of mentally lazy, elementary minded heard mentality that
many North Americans subscribe to, sadly enough...a Group Think nightmare,
in other words that nobody would ever personally *aspire* to, yet we fall in
to it unknowingly as a pattern and refuse to reverse it often enough...)

This is totally sad, of course, because one group of Muslim worshiping
others could be ill of heart, towing the Jihad Line, and astoundingly
fundamentalist followers/"Sheeple" as opposed to being pro-active leaders
and another could be loving, intelligent and globally embracing people of
worth and fortitude.

I think a lot of the most hard core "Bible Beaters" in North America, for
lack of a better term, tend to view believers and praying followers from
*OTHER* far away lands (or "Third World" countries as we so snobbily prefer
to point, admonish and refer to them as) as a *GROUP* of people who are
either EVIL or GOOD instead of viewing them as capable of both sets of
EMOTIONS or at least of a mixture of the two.

The Bible Beatin' in America problem, in other words, to a large degree is
that it's *SAFER* to view things in terms of black or white and good and
evil, just like in the movies, than it is to regard religious minded OTHERS
*separately* as *PEOPLE* who EACH have their OWN mind and should be free of
clumped judgment.

Bible Beaters in North America are not likely to regard *groups* of Muslim
people like they'd regard specific ears of corn, where sometimes it's good,
flavorful, maturely grown, rich in nutrients, and beneficial to your diet
and other times it's spoiled, small, ill for preparation, bad to ingest and
seemingly poisoned/infested.

The more that we clump people in to herds (like cattle or buckets of
vegetables) as we look out in to the world, the more we're actually
*CHEATING OURSELVES* and being too lazy to dissect, discover, and examine
the validity of what's there. We've been conditioned to be lazy in that
regard and when we fight it there's always somebody who comes along and
calls it "anal" or says it's wasteful to "think too hard" or "too long"
about something instead of making a *SNAP RUSH TO JUDGMENT*.

It's our own fault, basically. When Bible Beaters in America get Pigeon
Holed, they're the first to rise up and complain, yet they are often the
first to regard *OTHER* human beings belonging to a different religious sect
as either "Good" or "Evil" instead of as being *capable* of both sets of
emotions and sometimes in a conflict over which side in their heart will win
out in the end.

With this many victims it is impossible to put a face on the tragedy or even
really a series of faces. It is just too much. Using the celebrities involved
in this catastrophe is their attempt to do this.

It could be worse, you could be dealing your local news show that decided to
humanize the story by using a 5 minute segment on how a local organization of
gardeners might not be able to go to Thailand a month from now because of this.
It wouldn't have seemed so crass if it wasn't for the fact this is the story
they began the show on, and covered the actual tsunami and the amount of death
caused by it for only about 15 to maybe 30 seconds after it.

I for one can't believe that with all the destruction, all people here
feel compelled to do is spew hatred at each other.

And here I was thinking, in my most naive of moments, that this might
actually bring people of the world together for a moment in their
collective grief.

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but can both sides just get
along? If there is one universal truth, it is the pain that the victims
of this are going through - mothers who have had to let go of their
babies, husbands letting go of their wives, wives letting go of
husbands. Its devastating and all anyone can do is turn it into a usenet
pissing contest.

Try to remind yourself of your humanity and try to contribute something
positive.

Right or wrong I've always seen it as a way to bring the reality of
the event home to the greater population. And by home I don't mean
local, I mean as a mental state. Trying to make it less abstract.

One thing that *has* always bothered me is when the local news always
report the "local connection" to the event. Usually being someone who
went to school locally lost a distant cousin or something similarly
insignificant.

Incidently, has anyone heard how far inland the tsunami went? All of
the actual video I've seen has only shown the waves going maybe a
block or two inland. For that high of a death toll I would expect it
to extend pretty far inland. Or maybe the coast is more densely
populated than I think.

I am saddened that you think that "blonde haired 3 year old" is less
deserving of our sympathies because he is not in the majority affected
by the tsunami, who, as you see it, were brown haired, brown people.
Unlike you, my heart goes out to all those affected by this tragedy and
I see them as human beings deserving of our sympathy and support
regardless of their physical attributes.

The story ran precisely because he was a little blonde boy - ie, not a
brown local. It was feared his whole family had died and since he was
too young to talk, his distant relatives would never be found. NOT
because a blonde child would tug at more heartstrings.

The news stories of local children who had been separated from their
families do not need to air worldwide. I have no doubt that the local
agencies are working to reunite native children with their families.

A friend of mine was spending Christmas in Phuket; I finally received this
note (with personal snippage in [...]) Imagine scouting a beach with
binoculars and seeing it disappear under a tsunami between you and the
beach:

Both of us thank you for your concern - we are OK.

On that day (Sunday AM) we had arranged to take a long tail boat ride to
investigate other beaches and do some snorkeling. We left about 1 hour
before it all started.

When we got to the first beach we were looking thru the binoculars to see if
the beach was interesting and it kept appearing and disappearing. Thinking
that was strange we were careful as we approached (the Thai driver of the
long tail boat) and when we saw the wave double back on us from the beach we
got the hell out of there fast. From there we watched it all from the safety
of outside the bay - it was better to be in the water far from land.

We stayed on the boat for about 4 hours and finally convinced the Thai guy
to drop us at a beach we knew and knew we could walk back to our hotel.
Getting some rides and walking - we got back to out hotel about 3 hours
later - it was destroyed - totally obliterated. In the wreck we found [one
of our] passport[s] and our [national] ID cards - this was a big help.

Our friends from the beach - we have been there 7-8 times - helped us find
the sister hotel of the place we stayed - they put us up for the night and
helped us get to the airport the next day. [...W]e were in Bangkok by the
Monday afternoon.

After that I checked into the hotel I always use in BKK and they knew me.
And NSC Thai helped alot from there - sending a driver and 30,000 bhat
Tuesday am - to help me get to the USA and Japan Embassy to arrange return
passports etc.

We are now all set and have decided to stay in bangkok one more day [...]

The Thai say - Good luck with you today - and we had luck with us that day.
[one of us] says God put us on that boat and we are thankful for that.

Thanks for your concern.
We will chat after we are back in Japan.

I found the model's story interesting. It was the first story I heard
from a survivor. Clinging to a tree for eight hours when your pelvis is
broken and your boyfriend is missing must be unbelievably frightening.
Just because she's beautiful and rich doesn't mean she can't be hurt and
scared.

I too am astounded at the sniping that is going on about this poor woman.
She lost her boyfriend, she spent 8 terrifying, excruciatingly painful hours
clinging to a palm tree. She managed to hold on despite a broken pelvis and
internal injuries. The fear and pain and desperation and loneliness she
must have felt are beyond imagining. She deserves our sympathy. Her beauty
and wealth did not protect her -- she suffered and will suffer still more.
She, like all the victims, has all my sympathy. Poor little thing -- I
can't believe people are resenting a woman who has suffered the way she has.

I don't think it's racist. In any disaster, fellow countrymen will receive
top billing. For example, when the Space Shuttle disintegrated last year, it
was Dr. Kalpana Chawla on the front page of the Indian newspapers. I
wouldn't call India racist because its local newspapers devoted most of
their coverage to Chawla, rather than the other astronauts who died.

Yes, she's got a self righteous chip on her shoulder. People here and
elsewhere have told her as much. That's why they sent her packing at the
ASCF newsgroup and to this day, she *Still* blames it on all of them as if
she couldn't *possibly* be a preachy, do-gooder, claims to be fault free,
scolding whiner who brings this all on herself. She says they were just mean
and nasty and it's soooooo not her fault. She's got a defeatist attitude,
that one.

It gets verrrrrrrry tiresome the way Nimue lectures everybody around here to
"have a heart" or to "be more open minded and accepting" and then she turns
around, wigs out and throws a hissy fit tantrum complete with heavy
peppering of the "F Bomb" shouted at a ground breaking pitch the very next
day.

The stiff set of Nimue The Carmelite Nun school teacher with a hand paddle
rules she applies to others seem to be continuously overlooked by herself.
She writes herself a "Get out of Jail Free Card" every damned time, in other
words. She's a hypocritical little Pollyanna Wuss. Forever the finger
pointer, yet never taking the blame. Gotta' love her for it. Ohhhhhhhyeah.

Almost every person I've met who teaches in the NYC public schools is

I *have* empathized with people who have suffered -- and have done
more so for more people than you *ever* have, you idiotic freak.

Unlike you, I just don't feel the need to show off to and relentlessly
lecture the rest of Usenet about what a *wonderful* and *special*

How ironic, coming from the woman who for years has NEVER shut up about

114,000). Transparent hyprocrite.

Well, of course, the hypocrite, Leslie P., is the *only* person allowed
to change screen names, right? They appear to change weekly at this
point. I've also never wiped out my posts from the archives because
because they have embarrassing comments in them, such as calling people
c*nt, twat, shithead, and many other vile names that your intolerance
causes you to blurt at those who disagree with you. But I noticed that
you have removed an incredible amount of your really vile comments (sort
of the Best of Leslie) as you are trying to "project a new image" and
show how you've grown. Forget it--you haven't change a bit. You are
bullying Nimue simply because she's disagreed with you in the past, not
because there is anything innappropriate about her feeling sympathy for
victims of a disaster on a scale of such incredible proportions. And you
are being an incredibly insensitive hypocrite about this disaster,
simply because you weren't on a Thai beach to pour out the emotional
stories of how it relates to "you, you, you".

I realize you love the word "hypocrite," but perhaps you should take
the time to learn what it means before throwing it around on a regular
basis.

And what makes me so darn "insensitive" -- because I'm not posting

I love the way you end your insulting posts with a dose of melodrama. I
know you are trying to sound wise and soulful, but honestly it comess
off pretty funny.

And you're not? You both need to grow the fuck up. This whole
"conversation" is laughingly pathetic.

LOL, yeah sure--who is spending her very valuable time researching
headers? All I did was skim the posts from the last week that appear on
one screen, and the names appear next to the the subjects (are you not
aware how newsreaders work?). Only *your* self-absorbed egocentric mind
could translate that into stalking.

I could call the fact that you originally followed me through the thread
stalking, also, but I'm sane.

Don't need to read minds -- especially empty, puny ones like yours --
to know that this "Candy Vivaldi" troll appeared out of nowhere to
attack me. It took less than a minute to look up that nym on Google
groups and confirm that it was never used before.

LOL! You really *are* that inept, aren't you? It's not an act, I see.

Again, it took about a minute to compare the NNTP Posting Host # and
newsreader with one of your many other posts. It's not a difficult
thing for people who aren't dumb as a bag of rocks, which explains why
you believe it's a time-consuming effort.

I'm genuinely sorry that you are too stupid to figure out how to post
so that your messages are not archived. Big difference between using
the No-Archive function (something which many people here use, but I
don't see you bitching and crying about all of them using it) and
getting posts removed from the archive. But that's too complex for

Every news outlet I watch was running with the story right away.
Obviously they
intensified after they got footage and more stories. Seems like a
spurious claim
from Drudge to me........

Wild Monkshood

.

It was on Christmas day U.S> time, wasn't it? To clarify, I think he
was referring to the networks not having assets on the scene, nor ready
to go into action sufficiently. He said something about if they weren't
fully up to the task or reporting the historic, breaking event with the
urgency it deserved,, then they should have gone to Asian feeds.
Something like that (it dovetails with his , and not only his,
assertion that the news networks have cut back on their resources
internationally and are a shell of owhat they once were.) I wasn't
watching the early coverage so I don't know.

You seem to NEED to believe someone is always focused on you. You've
accused others of stalking you. God help some poor schlub who happens to
be walking behind you in the street!

I've responded to you in this thread only. Considering *that* stalking
is a sign of mental instability.

True to form, you keep throwing around words when you don't know what
they mean, Sara. A "netcop" is someone who goes around reporting
people to their ISPs for various infractions. Show that I've done
that, or shut your stupid mouth.

Quickly looking up trolls isn't out of the ordinary -- especially when
the troll in question exists only to attack one person. Each and every
post you've made with this dopey nym has been to me, and you have the
*nerve* to accuse *me* of narcissism, Stalkin' Sara?! You are
seriously mentally ill, in addition to being profoundly stupid.

You lying sack of shit. YOU are the one who admitted that you were
watching how much I was posting here recently. And YOU are the one who
created this fake screen name solely for the purpose of attacking me.
Oh, and who first posted to whom in this thread, you lying freak?

By the way, when are you going to start demanding that all the people
here who doesn't want their posts archived at Google explain to you
why they do it?

Keep choking on that hypocrisy, Stupid Sara!

Oh, 'scuse me. You are the USENET police. Telling other people what to
do--well ok, maybe you're just incredibly bossy.

I'm not a troll. I've been here since before you were WWRD. Back when
you were screaming c*nt at every person who crossed your sorry path.
Also calling everyone over 35 "old hags".

Each and every

Geez, can't you come up with anything original at all? You seem only
capable of taking words other use and then repeating them back.

For chrissake. You are always accusing others of stalking you. You seem
to have the word "respond" and "stalk" confused. Maybe a dictionary
would help?

>>
>
>
> You lying sack of shit. YOU are the one who admitted that you were

No, that was not what I said at all. I did not say "watching". That
makes you a "lying sack of shit", by your own logic. My, but you are
very dense, aren't you? I truly hate to disappoint you, but I responded
when I read your BULLYING post to Nimue. I hate bullies, as well as
hypocrites, and that motivated me to reply. I replied to another bully
also.

And YOU are the one who
> created this fake screen name solely for the purpose of attacking me.

There you go with that self-centered Leslie--"me, me, me" thing again.

>

When they become REALLY paranoid and accuse me of making up names solely
to attack them, and go one step further in their pathological
personality disorder and think I'm stalking them.

>
> Keep choking on that hypocrisy, Stupid Sara!

LOL. So, Neurotic Leslie, are you stalking me? This is about the fourth
time you've replied to me in this thread and to nobody else. By your
twisted logic--that is stalking. And watch out for that strangers
walking behind you on the sidewalk. They may be stalking you also.
