Yet another fair-haired beauty is leaving ER. Maria Bello, who joined the show
at the end of the 1996-97 season as Dr. Anna Del Amico, is hanging up her
stethoscope.
When exactly Bello will depart is unclear. "She might come back for one show,
for five shows or not at all," says her spokeswoman. "We don't know how she's
going to leave."
Bello's departure is apparently a mutual decision between the actress and the
producers of the smash NBC drama (Thursdays, 10 pm/ET). She had signed on to
play the professional rival of George Clooney's Dr. Doug Ross, but any chance
of romantic sparks between the two was quashed by Ross's renewed relationship
with Julianna Margulies' Nurse Carol Hathaway.
But don't break out the defibrillator for Bello's career: Her big-screen
prospects are quite healthy indeed. While working on ER, she managed to squeeze
in starring roles opposite Mel Gibson in Payback, which is slated for an August
release, and opposite Ben Stiller in Permanent Midnight, due out this fall.
Interestingly, light-haired actresses haven't lasted long on ER. Dirty-blond
Sherry Stringfield stunned the TV biz by leaving the show in the middle of the
third season to spend more time with her boyfriend. Christine Elise started and
ended her career as an ER intern the second season. Glenne Headly lasted for a
handful of episodes in the third season, and Marg Helgenberger did a short
stint as Clooney's love interest in 1996. In fact, Ellen Crawford, who plays
the small role of Nurse Lydia Wright, is the only towhead to have been on the
show for its entire run. All of this leads us to offer a beauty tip to the
brown-haired Margulies: Never get highlights. — Susan Campbell Beachy

Carter is going to take those boyish good looks and hit on Dr. Greene...they're
both unlucky in ER love.

But Mark is in love with Doug! Check out the episode that should air tomorrow
(if they are airing in order). It's the road-trip episode where Mark and Doug
go to claim Doug's dead dad's body. Anyway, there's a scene in a motel where
they kinda play-wrestle a little bit on the bed (wearing only boxers and
t-shirts) that raised my eyebrows.

Part of that was filmed - literally - in my backyard!
