I don't know what news channel he's on, but the weather guy Sean McLaughlin,
pronounces his name "SEEN". I've heard lots of pretentious pronouncing of
names and spelling of names trying to be different, but this one just sounds
silly. For some reason it really bothers me and when they announce him, I
have to change the channel. Strange how little things can bother a person so
much. But it does.

I saw him one time on the Today show and they explained why he pronounces
his name that way. Apparently, he has a twin or a brother whose name is
"Shawn," thus the weird pronunciation of "Sean" to differentiate it from his
brother's name. So you have to blame his parents, who may not have realized
that "Sean" and "Shawn" are normally pronounced the same in the normal
world.

There's no doubt who has the most pretentious pronunciation of his
name. It's no coincidence he's also the most pretentious a-hole on the
face of the earth!

Bono. Instead of properly calling himself "Boe-no", he pronounces his
name "Bah-no". Naming himself a single name would be pretentious in
the first place even if he pronounced Bono correctly.

Because not everyone else pronounces it "Shareul". My cousin's name is
Cheryl, and the family's always pronounced it the way Oprah does.

Come to think of it, I've known several Cheryls in my life, and they all
pronounced it that way. I wonder if it's a Southern thing. Oprah's
from Tennessee, so that may be why she's does the "rhymes with Earl"
pronounciation.

I know a Cheryl from the UK who insists on a hard "ch" -- "TCHeril"

So, indeed, everyone doesn't pronounce it "Shareul"

Furthermore it's not *the* Brit pronunciation, it's *a* Brit
pronunciation -- and not all that common.

I think Ralph Richardson preferred it too, but I'm not sure.

Actually, it's Latin, and that's the correct way to pronounce it. His
given name is, if I remember correctly, Paul Hewson. He was dubbed
"Bono Vox" ("good voice" in Latin) by someone when he was young, and he
kept it as a stage name (although he's dropped the Vox part).

I still find him obnoxious, though. Same with Sting.
