Well, we can all sleep well tonight knowing you're no longer "bugged"
by such a world-shattering problem!
Bono. Instead of properly calling himself "Boe-no", he pronounces his
name "Bah-no". Naming himself a single name would be pretentious in
the first place even if he pronounced Bono correctly.
Does his brother also do the weather on TV?
Also put me down for;
1. fmr Mayor Ed "Koch"
not anyone famous, but a friend of the family insists that her name
(Tara) be prounounced "Tear-ah". 99% of all the Tara's that I've ever
known pronounce it "Tar-ah".

Thank God for Moms! 'Bet' Midler works, 'Betty' Midler is awful.

A pretty long-established British pronunciation.

But "Mary Bones" is great!
I always chuckle how Rosanna Arquette insists on pronouncing her name
Roz-onna. Also I remember reading stories about how JFK's sisters made
fun of Jackie because she told everyone to pronounce her name as the
French do, Jacque-leen, with the accent on the last syllable.

Here's my name peeve: How Oprah pronounces certain words, such as the
name Cheryl.
To Oprah, "Cheryl" rhymes with "Earl," a la the shortened form of
"Shirley."
Everyone else manages to say "Share-ul." Why not Oprah?

Everything's my fault.

Well, um that sent me off to IMDB to find out what her real name is:
Demetria Gene Guynes
So I can now see why it is pronounced Duh-MEE.
>Sean McLaughlin is a twin. His brother, Sean, uses the traditional

His brother has the same spelling? Thought he was a shawn? Sean
(seen) is a weird pronunciation.
<<Also I remember reading stories about how JFK's sisters made fun of

And I also remember reading about when she had dinner with the Kennedy
family for the first time, and told them how she pronounced her name,
one of the sisters snickered, "Rhymes with 'queen.'"
She was an awfully smart woman to keep her children distanced from that
clan's offspring as much as possible, and to raise them as sensibly and
sensitively as she did. They were the least Kennedy of the Kennedys.

Because not everyone else pronounces it "Shareul". My cousin's name is
Cheryl, and the family's always pronounced it the way Oprah does.
Come to think of it, I've known several Cheryls in my life, and they all
pronounced it that way. I wonder if it's a Southern thing. Oprah's
from Tennessee, so that may be why she's does the "rhymes with Earl"
pronounciation.

I know a Cheryl from the UK who insists on a hard "ch" -- "TCHeril"
So, indeed, everyone doesn't pronounce it "Shareul"

It must be a Southern thing because I say it the same way as you and am
Southern as well.

"Rafe" is the Brit way of pronouncing Ralph. RE: Composer Ralph (Rafe) von
Williams.
I think you mean Ralph Vaughan Williams.
....with some of the most gorgeous eyes to ever grace the big screen
too.
Her given name is Demetria, so I'm betting it's a pet name -- and
pronunciaion she's had since she was half a demi.

Furthermore it's not *the* Brit pronunciation, it's *a* Brit
pronunciation -- and not all that common.
I think Ralph Richardson preferred it too, but I'm not sure.

Yes.
But then there was Rafer Johnson -- no connection!

Actually, it's Latin, and that's the correct way to pronounce it. His
given name is, if I remember correctly, Paul Hewson. He was dubbed
"Bono Vox" ("good voice" in Latin) by someone when he was young, and he
kept it as a stage name (although he's dropped the Vox part).
I still find him obnoxious, though. Same with Sting.

I was going to post that! I liked his music in college. I faintly remember
singing a collection of songs, like The Vagabond, Sally Gardens and Oliver
Cromwell.
