I was surprised at the lackluster selection of performers. James Taylor was
good, but John Mellencamp seemed to not care and has apparently lost a lot of
his voice anyway. Alicia Keys must have been chosen only because she's young
and hip, because she pushed Bridge Over Troubled Water through her nose at
rapid pace and mangled all of the beauty in that wonderful song. Then some
blonde woman walks out with a fiddle, and never plays the fiddle, not even for
a second.

Paul seemed unhappy half the time, and I can't blame him.

I kept hoping Art Garfunkel might show up. Are they still not that close?

It was a very disappointing tribute. Alicia Keys out-and-out butchered "Bridge
Over Troubled Water." The blonde with the fiddle was Alison Krauss, and I
though her duet with James Taylor on "The Boxer" was the only performance
worthy of the music.
Artie should have been there.

Yeah I watched it. I thought Alicia Keys was awful, she is highly overrated.
John Cougar has smoked too many cigarettes his voice is shot. I thought it was
kind of funny Colin Powell & wife were sitting 2 rows in front of Sidney
Poitier & wife.

I caught the last half of the show.
I noticed his wife was seated behind him.
Did she perform in the show at all?

No and everytime they showed her on camera she was looking down at her feet or
had her eyes closed.

maybe mr. simon didn't like being an afterthought when mccartney turned it down
but you can't really say no

i still don't understand how james earl jones got nominated...not what i'd call
some monumental acting career
how about quincy jones instead, written soundtracks, several good jazz albums,
and master record producer

I thought Jones received the award already.

Jones was honored last year, appropriately so.

You're right! I always get Edie Brickell
confused with Natalie Merchant.
My bad! ;-)

It was strange because I sat there wondering what is the connection
between John Mellencamp and Paul Simon? Also, Mr Mellencamp missed the
obvious choice to sing from the song My mamma Loves Me Like a Rock,
the verse:

if I was the president
(was the president)
the minute the congress called my name
I'd say now, who do, who do you think you're fooling?

cuz you know, Dubya was sitting right there...

It was a strange show this year, just ... uneven. James Taylor said
some nice things, and Steve Martin was really funny in his
introduction and tribute to Paul Simon, if a little deadpan. People
were just howling in the audience, which was quite refreshing! But, to
blow the opportunity to honor one of our greatest living songwriters,
or to do it so half-assed, is shameful.

A few years ago, they honored Willie Nelson and it was amazing. Tommy
Lee Jones did the tribute then all the guys in the Highwaymen or the
Troubadors or whatever the name of the group is (it's early here) came
out, Kristofferson, all those guys, then they brought out Willie's
bus! On the stage! Now that was a tribute!

Happy last day of the year
