He wasn't holding anything to his ear. In the early days he would close off his right ear and in later years sometimes wore a ear monitor to hear himself. A live stage with foot monitors and back amps is very loud.

Phillip obviously hasn't seen Robin either in concert or on YouTube. Take a look at the Melbourne concert in 1990 as an example.

looks to be the left side of a headset. more reliable than in-ear monitors. plus, you feel less separated when you can hear your surroundings. best of both worlds that way.
