I would have liked to see President Obama give some sort of apology,
and provide some sort of reassurance that our country would not do
something like that again, but then again, for as long as there are
going to be Republicans in our country, then there will be evil in the
world. No point in apologizing for something which we all know is
going to happen again, when about half of the American population is
stupid enough to vote for these Republicans.
Let me recap an important history lesson here. Chile, more than any
country in South America, has had an extensive democratic tradition
that dates back more than a hundred years. So Republican President
Richard Nixon decided to, on September 11 of 1973, to use the vast
powers of our military and our CIA to overthrow Chile's democracy. A
horrible wing-nut dictator (by the name of Augusto Pinochet) then went
on to brutally torture more than a hundred thousands people in Chile.
In what is widely regarded as the darkest period of that country's
political history, well over 30,000 Chileans were tortured so brutally
that they died in custody, and still more were killed and assassinated
thru out the land.
Survivors of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship are hoping that President
Obama will order the release of some classified U.S. documents which
are critical to prosecuting the Chilean agents who were responsible
for all those tortures and deaths.
In November of 1970, Dr. Salvador Allende won the elections, replacing
the previous President of Chile, Eduardo Frei Montalva. In the 1973
coup, both of them, Allende and Montalva were killed.
Carmen Frei, the daughter of former Chilean President Eduardo
Montalva, said this recently:
"Because there has been such a radical change in the politics of the
United States that we believe in the human rights policies of
President Barack Obama, this is the moment."
Sen. Isabel Allende, daughter of the late Dr. Salvador Allende, said
this recently:
"The coup represents an unpaid debt for the justice system, to
acknowledge the numerous crimes committed that day, identify those who
participated, establishing their criminal responsibilities and knowing
the entire truth of that day."
Lorena Pizarro, spokesperson of the Association of Families of the
Detained and Disappeared, said this recently:
"If Sebastian Pinera (today's President of Chile) is serious about
upholding human rights, he should ask Obama for all the CIA files".

It does seem that the decent thing to do would be to resolve this.
Why? Are you a citizen of Chile?
