Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and anyone stuck in
between...

Well, yesterday saw me and my baby tidying up after finishing off our
first ever home improvement job together. We have now turned the old,
dirty, mustard-yellow mudroom into a pristine, berry-and-white
entrance hall. Painted, added cornering to previously un-finished
windows, added screen-door, new cupboard to keep gunk out of the way,
three potted plants on top of that, new screen door... Even though you
can see the errors we (mostly me) as newbies made, it looks beautiful.
And we are both discussing the next job (well, actually, we're
discussing every single job to do inside the house and debating which
the next one will be). This is, I think, quite remarkable since when I
first moved here my motto was 'hire someone'. Sometimes you just know
that the gods are coercing you into getting off your behind as, in
this case, we tried contacting 3 different odd-job/home improvement
people: one said he didn't do small things like decorating, one didn't
get back to us at all and another cancelled at the last minute. So,
now I am converted. HGTV has taken over from Discovery-Science as my
favorite channel, I have been reading diy books/magazines, and am
longing for the next task... Heh, even my own mother said she didn't
think I had it in me.

Now, I have a question. For those of you who don't hate both, which do
you prefer, gardening or home improvement (ie interior stuff). For me,
its definitely the latter. I figured the following differences, but
maybe I'm missing something

Gardening | Home Improvement
|
House looks better to all | Improvements only seen by some
(positive) | (negative)
Have to keep redoing it | Lasts for years
(negative) | (positive)
Midsummer kills it all | Sunshine makes it look nicer
(negative) | (positive)
Hosepipe bans kill it | Don't need a hosepipe indoors
(negative) | (positive)
Winter kills/buries it | Nice all year
(negative) | (positive)

Jef and I are about to enter into the world of diy and gardening when our
house gets finished in a few months. Even though it'll be a new house so
no repairs will be necessary, we already have a long list of improvements
we'd like to do. We'll probably be busy with gardening first though since
there will be nothing there. Not sure yet which I'll like better. It
probably depends on the task and the weather. I'm sure that in the middle
of summer when it's 100 degrees outside I'd much rather be painting inside
than working in the garden. On the other hand, I like the idea of seeing
something I planted grow and blossom.

Btw, HGTV has become our favorite too. I think it's a sign of growing old.
:-)

Congratulations on a job done well and actually completed!!!!
As for your question, I love them both if I have the time to do it right or
have someone do it for me!!!!!!!!
I love to paint but hate the prep work; I love the gardening but hate the
initial planting thereof.
I love to decorate if I have the time and money.
I quess, all in all, I would rather make a quilt.

Syren! I never realized you, like my baby, are a quilter. Now there is
an obsession and a half. I think, were it not for the fact Annie is
five times as obsessed with work as with quilting, we'd be
penniless... I trust you have a good stack of ufo's?

I love to quilt...I have mostly done baby quilts but have actually completed
a couple of big ones. They have all been given away. I am working on a
baby quilt right now...actually, two..........my friends have babies faster
than I can stitch!!!! The scarey thing is, one of the quilts I am working
on now is not for my friend's baby but for her first grandchild!!!! A whole
new generation to quilt for!
ufo's? Unfinished objects???? Yes, too many.
And many boxes of wonderful fabrics...........I should never be allowed into
a fabric store!! I thoroughly subscribe to the notion that she who dies
with the most fabric in her stash wins!!! It also doesn't help that I know
many seamstresses who do not do quilting so they save all their scraps for
me!!! Sometimes, when I go out to quilt, it takes me a night or two just to
go thru the stash to find the right fabrics.
I also hoard old ties...my favorite quilting fabric..........have made many
pieced vests and backpacks and purses and dolls and toys, ornaments, etc.
Yes, obsession, indeed!!!!
I also bead and embroider and cross stitch........too many obsessions!

This one is easy for me...home improvements! I like remodeling,
changing things, moving things and according to Greg 'tearing out
walls'. Gardening isn't as productive to me, because when I weed, it
just comes back and I have to do it over again. When you remodel it
lasts a lot longer :)

I do like to take care of what's already planted, but am not good
about growing things myself...I seem to do best with plants that
thrive on neglect :)

*Hugs*
