It doesn't get 28 MPG. For a normal car, you'd probably see 19 MPG
"Overall." For SUVs and big ass luxury cars, a pretty safe estimate is
the city mileage. Take that and use it for your city/highway "Average"
and you should be close to right if not spot-on.

Add bulletproofing and that the 19 MPG becomes optimism.

Audi A8 L Security Is An Armored Luxobarge With The S8's Engine

If it weren't for the extra LED blue lights, you'd be tempted to say this is
just another Audi A8 L. However, we're actually looking at the new Security
version launched in Russia without so much as a press release. It combines a
protected passenger cell complying with the bulletproof class VR9 with the
glass areas that meet the requirements of the resistance class 10.

It weighs a hefty 8,542 pounds (3,875 kilograms) not just because of the added
armoring, but also due to the extra hardware Audi installed. A relevant example
would have to be the fire-extinguishing system featuring nozzles on the

Meet Audi's Flagship Vehicle

You could be tempted to think that this is simply another Audi A8 L if it
weren't for the additional LED blue lights. In reality, however, we're taking a
peek at the updated Security version that was quietly released in Russia. It
combines a shielded passenger compartment that complies with ballistic class
VR9 criteria with glass portions that satisfy resistance class 10 requirements.

In the land of the Rus, Audi introduced the A8 L Security. Making an A8 L
worthy of the Security classification, which denotes more than just projectile
defense-although there is plenty of that-takes 400 hours. A NATO 7.62×51 mm
bullet, even one that has been hardened, as well as explosives like grenades
and mines may be fired through the cabin since it is certified for vehicle
resistance level 9 (VR9) ballistic protection. The glass has a VR10 rating,
which is the highest you'll find in a car that wasn't created with conflict
zones in mind.


Audi A8 L Specs

ITS SUBSTANTIAL 8,542 POUND (3,875 KILOGRAM) WEIGHT is the result of both the
additional armoring and the additional gear Audi incorporated. The fire-
extinguishing system with nozzles on the underbody, wheel housings, fuel tank,
and below the hood would have to be a pertinent example. The electronics for
the intercom are housed in an armored box built into the trunk along with an
extra battery.

A standard A8 L must undergo an additional 400 hours of labor to be converted
to the Security specification, which is completed at a special facility.
Security officials put each and every one of the company's armored vehicles
through tests to see how well they stand up against snipers, hand grenades, and
rapid fire. A run-flat technology that enables the automobile to move at a top
speed of 50 mph for a maximum of 50 miles would allow it to escape even in a
real-world situation with a damaged tire.

The A8 L Security has a fire suppression system with nozzles beneath the hood,
in the wheel housings, in the fuel tank, and all around the underbody because
threats don't only come from weapons. Bullet holes in the gasoline tank are
patched with sealant. The sedan's air flaps shut in the event of a chemical
assault, and an internal oxygen source pumps new oxygen into the cockpit. If
the shooting hasn't already moved other drivers out of the way, run-flat tires
on 20-inch rims are good for 50 miles at 50 mph without air, and recessed
emergency vehicle illumination under the grille, in the side mirrors, and in
the rear will do the same.

Meet The Audi A8 L Security: The Ultimate Armored Luxury Sedan

Not much is going to stop this stealthy, armored limo.

In Russia, the ultimate Audi A8 has just been launched: the long-wheelbase A8 L
Security. Designed for a specific - and highly valued - clientele who demand
maximum protection no matter what the situation, the A8 L Security is
reinforced with ultra-tough materials to withstand all manner of violent
attacks. It's the kind of car that Tom Cruise could have used as he was running
away from an exploding Kremlin in 2011's action film Mission: Impossible -
Ghost Protocol.

The modifications made to the A8 L meet the VR9/VR10 protection classification.
Which means that this special A8 can shield occupants from bullets as powerful
as .50 caliber due to a polycarbonate layer used to achieve this standard of
protection. That's just scratching the surface because everything - from the
chassis to the electronics - has been revised to meet the stringent

arise. The ventilation system will automatically prevent polluted air from
entering the cabin. PAX emergency running tires are fitted - even if they're
completely flat, the Audi can be driven at a speed of around 50 mph and for a
distance just shy of 50 miles.

The cabin is further strengthened by the use of aramid fiber, a special
aluminum alloy, and high-strength steel. In the event of a fire, an
extinguishing system with nozzles located under the hood, within the underbody,
and even in the fuel tank works to contain the blaze. It's serious stuff, and
there are few cars we'd rather be in should some kind of apocalyptic event take
place.

Of course, being an A8, this is still a full-size luxury sedan of the highest
caliber. That means that customers get a powerful V8 borrowed from the S8 with
563 horsepower, although it does have to contend with much more heft. The A8 L
Security has a curb weight starting at a titanic 8,708 pounds. It can still
reach 62 mph in a respectable 6.3 seconds, though, somehow. The luxurious cabin
is nearly indistinguishable from the regular A8 L, with fine leather/wood trim,
power-adjustable seats with massage, and a rather appropriately named Bang &
Olufsen sound system to drown out pesky grenade blasts.

Because anonymity is the name of the game for an armored vehicle, it's
impossible to tell the A8 L Security apart from the A8 L, and that's absolutely
intentional. While Audi sedans are often criticized for blending into the
background too much, the stealthy look works a charm in this application. Of
course, if you want your life to be saved with a bit more bling, you can always
get an armored Lincoln Navigator.

Protection from man-made elements doesn't come cheaply, though - in Russia, the
Audi A8 L Security costs the equivalent of $750,000.
