The NOAA have updated their gridded SST dataset ERSST to the end of
July 2023. While no formal areal averages are provided with the update
my informal homogenisation finds the global SST averaged .74C above
the NOAA's 1970-2000 baseline scoring a new 170y record.
The NH avg SST was more than 1C above the baseline, also a new record.
And the SH was .52C above baseline, a new record.
Somewhat unusually, the equatorial region that normally is warming
much slower than average for the planet saw +.89C and also scored
a new record.
The Arctic ocean also scored more than 1C above normal, but that's so
common since 2000 that only scored a 12th place.
The ocean off the Antarctic was just under 1980s avgs, ranking 58th
warmest since 1854.
The summary for the main regions of interest look like:
Region Rank Anom
(/170) (deg C rel ~1980s)
nhem 1 1.0479 <- warm
equat 1 0.8882
globe 1 0.7438
shem 1 0.5177
npole 12 1.0266 <- warm
spole 58 -0.0729
